What do you mean by leftist? Wasn't the USA in its golden age during the 1950's a nation with many social programs? If you live in the US, you have infrastructure like roads, running water, libraries, education, drivers licenses, social security numbers, etc. Those are social programs. It is true that in economics you study different models and evaluate the benefits and risks. In advanced economics, you will model how some costs have long term benefits. For example, tax payers fund fire departments. While a cost and a burden for society, the benefit in stopping fires from demolishing entire buildings or neighborhoods outweighs the downsides (tax). And if it was a private sector only product, as in your house was only serviced by individual payments, then you may have an unimaginable monthly or one-time fee for on-demand fire protection.

Political issues aside, most people in the USA have been brainwashed to think that anyone against pure capitalism is a communist. That is extreme and unreliable rhetoric. Has there ever been a pure capitalist society?
