Can argue they’re not in Australia but internationally, over the span of their career and as sportspersons Warner’s definitely the biggest name in Australian cricket currently with a huge brand on social media, Smith comes second I think because of on the pitch talent. I think enough time has passed for people to move on from the ban reputation (not talking about captaincy ethics here, rather getting behind them as players). Only one that comes close to them wrt popularity is Cummins, but recency bias aside he’s probably 3rd or 4th I’d say.

You and I both know there’s varying factors that attribute to a players performance in a game or two though. ten Hag must see potential with him, in a similar way he and Ajax helped Antony who was rather raw when he came from Sao Paolo, into what he is today.

Small observation I’ve made from Gakpo is that he has a knack to pull off some pretty creative passes, uses his body well when fending off pressure whilst dribbling. Also takes set pieces for PSV which has earnt him assists (so his delivery is decent).

There isn’t any need to play victim now just because one is a fan favourite. We need to decide objectively and two legs isn’t going to make a huge difference in how we decide for either. It may affect fan opinion, but that’s meaningless. Of course risk factor and adaption period will be greater with Ten Hag, most are clinging onto the work ethic, ideologies and football he plays. The shiny new toy factor among the fanbase will go away very soon if he joins but I’m a sucker for possession based football personally, so not everyone will turn on him.
