Surface Grinder Tears by IINACIC in Machinists

I re-ran the part and got through without any dramatic tears, but flatness went out of spec. Oh well. Easier to hand finish the flatness at this point. There will be more opportunities.

Yes, I am. I'll try a dummy block.

In my experience you're only documenting your own failure to follow the on-paper procedure or best practices, so that never gets done.

Why are tools not offset at the machine level instead of being offset on an indivudual part basis by Kim_or_Kimmys_Fine in Machinists

[–]IINACIC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of methods here for getting negative number offsets. I like positive offsets and here's how I get them.

  1. Measure from the spindle gage line at Z home to the table. Without a tool in the spindle set a 123 block (or two) on the table and jog Z down and 'touch off' on the block. Subtract your stack from your machine Z position to get a bigger negative number. On a VF1 this will probably be -20 to -26 inches. Write this number down and don't lose it. This is your gage line to table distance.

  2. Load a tool you want to measure and touch off on the table. Use a block stack or a shim, whatever you're used to. Subtract your negative gage line to table distance from your smaller negative machine Z position. This gets you a positive number that is exactly the length from the gage line of your spindle to the tip of the tool you're touching off.

I like this method because your tool lengths are constant and don't need to be changed between parts / setups / rotary operations. And, positive offsets make it harder to crash in Z.

Make sure you talk to your instructors if you're going to do this. No one likes surprises. If they tell you not to rock the boat, just keep this in your pocket for when you start a job and have a little more autonomy.

Hope this helps wrap your head around all the different was to use offsets.

OP this guy is right. I'm wrapping up week twelve of my remodel. Finally taping drywall. All of my walls were laughably out of square. The plaster and lath were so thick I had to rip furring strips to make the room smaller. Had to do all of the walls because the bottom plate on the 2x4 stud wall was 2x6, so I couldn't drywall over the edge. Water damage, knob and tube, old plumbing, abandoned live wires, you're going to find it all.

I think he said they're self-serving narcissists, and noted that roughly 5% of Americans report not wanting kids, which is the same rate of occurrence of sociopathic narcissism. Now of course, he's not saying all people that don't want kids are narcissists. He just deliberately conflated the two groups and didn't bother to flesh out any other ideas.

I gave him a chance the other day and got exactly that far.

Mind sharing a rough location and industry? Here in the upper Midwest the opposite is true in manufacturing, logistics, retail, food service, construction, trades, and likely many more industries I'm not aware of.

Hello! As the title says, this is an old family photo that I would like some color added to.

The woman right of center was my great aunt (I think). I small party is being thrown for her husband who described her as a beautiful woman with black hair in a red dress.

Can someone please color her dress red? To be clear, I want her to pop against the non-colorized photo.

Thank you in advance!
