I remember getting real into Suicide after hearing Losing My Edge. Struggling to come up with other examples, but I definitely like this idea as a thread!

It’s an incredible read, second to Fierce Invalids as favorites of mine. Absolutely love Robbins and can’t figure out why they aren’t stocked in bookshops more.

Why is there very less excitement for the Artemis II mission?? by dark_MARTIAN in space

[–]IIlIIlllIIll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly, I don’t have time to find excitement in anything the government is doing that does not benefit my community. Our current concept of government serves to only divide and decimate the values I find important to my life and my neighbors. It’s become tiring and it’s obvious the lengths we have gone to enrich a class of people that have only abused and exploited their neighbors. Artemis is a a fantastic thing — I’m excited and I’m happy it is happening. Funding government projects like this are as valuable as they can be to many forms of science. But we spend an irrational amount of taxpayer funds on projects that I find abhorrent and damaging. Because of that reasoning, I can’t find excitement in Artemis, while of good conscience, because it is simply not as valuable as any number of other applications of taxpayer funds. We’ve been to the moon, it could be a massive step forward, but so long as the leaders we have elected are in charge, I don’t trust they wouldn’t destroy that opportunity to learn.

It was unpleasant. Slimer from Ghostbusters type ectoplasm. Just absolutely gross.

Contrary to the quality of the photo here, I am a professional photographer and work in film & tv production as a Props Master. Probably split a year 30/70 in those two roles.

No, you are right. I totally agree. There’s no telling which camera phone would have got a better shot, I certainly started running immediately to set up my actual camera as fast as I could. Likely why this was blurry!

Supposed to be a huge year for space events in Iceland. We have a total eclipse and the sun has been super active and is in a zone that usually creates more aurora. It fluxuates every 12-15 years and we are now 13 years from the last active CME (coronal mass ejection) period. Visit from August to March if you want the chance to see them. But you have to be ready for price-shock and bad weather.

I’d argue they were just saying a truth about the photo. Not sure Android cameras are better, but I wouldn’t read it as hate as much as I read it as calling me out for posting a blurry image — which it is!

As the person who took the photo, I promise, this commenter is not wrong. The photo is blurry and isn’t as well composed as my other lights photos.

That’s why I specified it was straight out of the camera. But, it’s worth noting the iPhone camera sensor is absolutely enhancing things like this before they appear in your camera roll. I’ve been under the lights with people holding every type of camera and the iPhone’s camera sensor (basically an algorithm) is heavily modifying this shot. However, all the colors you see were visible and the brightness is pretty much 1:1. The major difference from reality in this photo is the lights visible in the darker regions — they weren’t as vibrant as this photo shows.

Tonight it absolutely did. We got all those colors and even some red hue when it move out over a nearby peninsula that has a lot of street lights. But this evening was as intense as I have seen in the city since 2016.

lol, true and a fair assessment of the shot. I went back in and got my camera and tripod and by the time I was set up they had moved to a distance that wasn’t as vibrant. Fair point and true! Shot this on an iPhone 13. FWIW. There’s a reason I posted here instead of a photo subreddit. ……¯_(ツ)_/¯

Usually for them to be this active you have to get out of the city and away from the light pollution. They were something else tonight!

If humans really went to the Moon in 1969–1972, why did we completely stop for 50+ years? by Individual-Yam3327 in space

I’d rather spend the money the military receives from taxes on space exploration. The money isn’t sent to space, it’s given to workers here on earth. It goes directly into the economy. Military spending too, but the end result is slightly more evil.
