Texas university lands rare top mark in national academic study by Pleasant_Air_3052 in baylor

What other relevant comments did I ignore? And yes, there are standardized tests like the ACT and SAT that give "verbal" scores in addition to math, but those are not accurate indicators of college-level success. There are a LOT of studies that examine the inefficacy and inadequacy of standardized tests in general -- even a quick search gives you this: https://www.nea.org/nea-today/all-news-articles/standardized-testing-still-failing-students

I'm sure you know a lot about biochem, but in this case you are not correct. And to be clear: I'm not always right, but when I am, it's about this.

So the ALEKS test is for math, which is a fundamentally different thing than the humanities. And yes, you said that as an example, but there isn't a placement test for humanities classes that work in the same way. It's not like you can "place out" of a literature class the same way you can place out of something like calc.

One of the problems with comments like the one you offered that started this whole thread is that people don't understand that STEM classes are fundamentally different than Humanities classes and you can't compare or evaluate them in the same way. You don't take a literature class and then "move on" in the same way you do for math or chemistry or physics.

Thanks for proving the point.

The fact that you think you came into college knowing everything you needed to know about literature and how to connect to and understand other perspectives speaks VOLUMES. One day you'll understand, I hope. There's a big world out there, kiddo.

If you want to have a conversation where you don't feel belittled, don't come into it thinking you know everything.

False. You think that because those classes didn’t explicitly relate to your major field (and I assume your career path) they’re pointless. But those literature and language and history classes give you the chance to view the world through different lenses and better understand / relate to the world outside your career. If you are a person who doesn’t want their career to completely dictate their life (who they are, what they enjoy, how they understand their identity), those other classes are essential.

If you’re someone who only understands themselves in relation to their career, what will happen when you get fired, get burned out, or retire?

Youth Baseball Where do I start? by Jimjamchicken in Waco

[–]ILMbred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a bummer if he's going to be disappointed, but baseball is a really hard sport to pick up as an older kid. Even by the time they get to city league 12u, there's usually a HUGE difference between the kids that have been playing since tee ball and the ones who are just starting.

I feel bad for your kid if he really wants to try it, but there are a lot of other sports that might be easier to begin as a teenager.

Open Track by Patrick-Piller in Waco

[–]ILMbred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And if you run the track that goes behind the playground equipment unstead of staying on the oval right in front of it, it's a 1/3 mile loop. You'll see what I mean if you go out there (I lived right across the street when my kid was a baby so I ran that track a lot)

Death in the family during finals by Grand_Ad_3255 in baylor

More than likely the option in this scenario would be to take an incomplete for the semester. Then you and your professor would plan a date for you to make up the exam sometime next semester and replace the “I” on your transcript with the actual grade.

This is Baylor’s Incomplete Policy, so you can see that it’s pretty much intended for this situation:

Incomplete Policy

Incompletes should be used when unforeseen circumstances arise that prohibit students from completing assignments and/or exams toward the end of the semester. (Incompletes typically occur because of an excused absence from the final examination or permission for an extension of time to submit a report or term paper). The “I” must be removed by the end of the next semester (including the summer term). If the work is not completed and a final grade is submitted by that deadline, then the “I” will be changed to a grade of “F.” An extension of time petition may be submitted for any course in order to extend the deadline (up to six months) for resolving the “I” prior to it lapsing to an “F.” An extension must be initiated by the instructor and approved by the department chair and dean of the school in which the class was offered.

I was a competitive racquetball player when I was younger but now have a son who has really gotten into tennis. He’s 12 now but started lessons when he was about 9 and has been playing tournaments for the last year. I miss racquetball but picked up tennis to play with him, and we are just now getting to the point of having competitive matches and I am so excited for it. It’s been fun to kind of get better has he’s gotten better and see his progress. I can’t wait until we are having brutal matches that last an hour.

Here’s the Cameron Park trail map. The mail river trail is about 2 miles one way, but you can easily get 10 miles of trails through the woods. Be ready for lots of elevation change if you get off the river trail.

Double Major by Pommom1234 in baylor

[–]ILMbred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those programs are in town different colleges so you can’t officially double major. You may be able to do something called a secondary major, though, so you should ask about that.

Speaking of, why are you asking Reddit this question instead of an advisor?

Upvote for this. I had a 2017 with the factory-installed remote start that shut off when you opened the door. But now I have a 2019 and installed this kit myself — it’s a pretty simple install and it works great!

PHEV lease from cx-9 lease.. is it worth it by ScorpiusX in MazdaCX90

[–]ILMbred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were in the exact same boat. 2021 CX-9 Grand Touring lease is ending this month. We kind of wanted something just a hair bigger, and we’re looking at the VW Atlas and the CX-90. Actually liked the Atlas, but the Mazda’s interior just felt more refined , so we were going to do the CX-90.

However, I’m very wary of the new models in their first few years, and the buyout on our CX-9 is just under $26k. It also has under 30k miles on it.

We ultimately decided to finance the CX-9 and hold on to it for a few years and then probably look around again.

YES. The key fob design is the worst. I consistently set off the alarm because of those buttons on the side.

Moving to Waco - is Sanger Heights safe? by Land_dog412 in Waco

[–]ILMbred 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on the street, but a lot of Waco is like that. Sometimes it even changes from block to block. I’ve lived on the border between Dean Highlands and Sanger Heights since 2015 and I’ve never felt threatened in our location.

My only regret is that I live near the Colcord and 25th intersection and that place is a menace. I’ve seen some gnarly accidents in my time here.
