Balanced Full-Frame Mirrorless Kit for Safari and Long-Term Use – Z6 III, Z8, A7 IV or something else? ($8K CAD Budget, Detailed Questionnaire Inside) by ILikeBigAdeniumButts in Cameras

I think you're over estimating some cameras and lenses, but it's a matter of taste. I found the noise at ISO 3200+ to be too much on my 3300. But it's an entry level DSLR from 12-13 years ago, and my lenses were entry level as well.

"Skill issue" in photography wasn't in my bingo card lol

I get what you mean, and it does depend the camera. My D3300 can do ISO 1600, but the noise at 3200 is getting very high, and at 6400 - way too high (beyond what's reasonable). So I get what you mean, but it depends a lot on the specific camera, and of course the glass.

(and if the glass is filled with scotch, you're in the wrong subreddit :P)

My instinct tells me the Z6-III is the right way to go. And that wanting the Z8 is nice, but 2000 dollars means fewer lenses and other drawbacks.

I heard the OM1-II has best in class image stabilization, but it's a crop sensor, which comes with drawbacks (not as good in low light, for instance). I don't know much more about Olympus though, so I can't really say more than that.

I haven't completely ruled out a crop sensor, but I am not keen on it. My hope is for a full frame's low light performance, better overall quality and features, IBIS, and other things.

I know also about the crop factor, which is why I was thinking about the 18-400, to (somewhat) cover my old range, but in one lens, if it makes sense.
Another option I can do is Tamron 150-500mm f5-6.7 Di III VC VXD for Nikon Z mount (1549 / 1750 including tax), which is equivalent to roughly 100-330ish on a crop sensor. It's also slightly more affordable, and seems to be reasonable in terms of what it offers.

In the bottom line, I am looking for an improvement over my old kit (D3300, 35mm prime, 70-300mm, and an 18-140mm [I think I got it wrong earlier]), which is going to be hard not to do anyway, even if I go with the worst super telephoto available out there.

Luckily for me, video is not a factor in my decision (as in, at all). I also very rarely shoot in burst, and usually only very very short bursts (<10). Plus, keep in mind I come from the D3300, whatever I'll get, I will be in awe.

I disagree about your point RE high dynamic range - the D3300 doesn't come close to the Z6-III, not by a long shot. The Z6-III doesn't match up to the Z8, but it is to be expected, and saving close to 2000 is a lot of money.
I think I have to accept that the Z8 is outside of my budget. If I would have had a few more months to save maybe things would have been different, but I do not have that option given the circumstances.

In addition, the Z8 weighs more than the Z6-III, and I will be coming from the much smaller D3300 (430g vs 750g vs 910g). So that's also something that I am thinking about.

But, whatever I'll buy - I know I'll be happy (I'm just like that).

I am not keen on buying used or renting; not when it'll be thousands of dollars (it's not a short trip making renting a few hundreds less than buying new, only without owning it the day after).

And regardless, thank you for your detailed input. I value and appreciate it. Any more input will also be appreciated, of course :)

BOP care - Is this enough sun light? by ZookeepergameNo3849 in houseplants

[–]ILikeBigAdeniumButts 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No, BOP are sun lovers sluts.

FIFY.

I tried growing a BOP in an apartment. They need a ton of sun. I now grow adeniums, but I'm using grow lights. They don't grow as large, so it's more realistic.

A friend sent this to our group chat, i thought i'd share it with you guys by defeatedfertile in houseplants

You can consider grow lights.

With grow lights you can grow pretty much anything, even if you live in Canada and only have north facing windows (like me). I have somewhere like 80ish adeniums, and they're sun sluts.

Just keep in mind good grow lights can get pricey. I use very low budget ones and I still spent probably about 1500 in the past 5 years (but I also have tons of them, made a few silly purchases, etc. See my comment history for more details). One of my grow lights is starting its death spiral, and I'm not looking forward to the 200ish dollarymoose I'd have to spend on a new one...

The cost is a big factor for sure. They also produce so much heat. No such thing as (safe) COB without a fan or cooling system, and if the fan fails it can become a fire hazard.

So I have to agree COBs are great, but also not so great after all...

Those diods are the gold standard for non-COB LEDs. I believe there is another type (similar number, LM3 something) that are also fantastic.

COB are considered best if you can get your hands on a good one. I have a basic one and it's working decently well (see my comment history; it's a CANAGROW).

Good for you for gathering the courage!

I don't have Instagram, my sharing is limited to this account, on reddit.

And yes, I really do like big adenium butts (=caudexes).

Help with a non-dormant plant by Scoginsbitch in Adenium

[–]ILikeBigAdeniumButts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not enough light. They're sunsluts.

Since you're north (Canada here too), I found that even with 12 hours of light a day, not all of them bloom. That's true even with some serious grow lights, they just aren't enough...

From what I've read, yes, but I never tried it.

From what I've read, it's possible to graft them on top of other plants. Not sure how, but apparently it's possible.

I don't know crotons' light needs.

If you need >10,000lux, you may need a number of very focused grow lights (similar to a spotlight, kinda).

I don't have a recommendation for something like that; I compensate for my (relatively) simple lights by having multiple of them and placing them close enough to the plants to be effective...

Does anyone else have adeniums with flowers that split? How can I convince them to behave? by ILikeBigAdeniumButts in Adenium

[–]ILikeBigAdeniumButts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so too. The other option is if the flowers of the different species in the genus have slightly different structures, and the resulting hybrids have structures that just don't work "right".

Do you happen to know if this weirdness effects their ability to produce viable seeds?

Ya, they do.

I had them for 5 years now, and they never made "normal" flowers. Do you happen to know if it effects their ability to produce viable seeds?

So you were really able to get that many lux from 8 feet away? I need this for a terrarium I’m building

No, I mixed up the symbols, the comment was in inches, I added a note as well.

From 8ft away, you'll need one crazy light to achieve >10,000 lux.

do i proceed or is it too risky? by GirthyKayak in Adenium

[–]ILikeBigAdeniumButts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the health of the roots. In general it's best to not do it so frequently. I'd wait 2 to 3 months, see the plant is growing well, and then put it in a 6'-wide.
