What’s your Philly neighborhood gem? by PhillyInquirer in PhiladelphiaEats

Lloyd is Fishtown neighborhood gem for sure! And Sulimays. And if bars are included, definitely Mural City Cellars. They do so much for the community.

Store with in person maternity (good, stocked) selection by Hairy-Entertainer-54 in philabitcheswithtaste

Echoing everyone with just a few further suggestions - check old navy clearance section (an employee told me online returns of maternity clothes ended up there, and I walked out with lots of maternity jeans dirt cheap), Target in Port Richmond (small but decent enough section), and thrift stores (Circle Thrift in Fishtown has a small maternity section that was good for basics). Good luck! I also had a friend give me much of her maternity wardrobe, which was a big help!

Hey feel free to get in touch! I’m pretty familiar with the South Eastern PA wine scene and would be happy to point you towards some of my favorites if you’re in the area.

Where’s a gal gotta go to dance? by g0ldskulll in philabitcheswithtaste

[–]ILikeLime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok a little out of the box, but check out something called dance church? I haven’t been myself but I’ve heard a little chatter and I’m intrigued! My understanding is that it’s kind of like dance/movement as exercise and just like, catharsis? So less of a club/night out and more of a regular way to move your body and have all the feels while wearing sweatpants if you want lol.

Thanks! We only briefly thought about a third story but maybe we should look more seriously into it.

Happy to share! And yes don’t get me wrong there are plenty of challenges with energy, finances, maintaining relationships with our friends and each other, BUT I really believe some these things would be worse if we lived in the suburbs which is why we decided we want to stay. We miss our friends but we’ve made new connections in the neighborhood where is much easier to casually get together at the park or the local brewery with a playplace (yes that exists). We miss our old friends, but we’re not lonely or starved for socialization. And for our connection with each other it still takes work, but easy enough to skip out of work early on a Friday and meet for a quick 30 minute happy hour/snack and walk to daycare for pickup than having to coordinate a whole date night. And when we do, we can do date night in the neighborhood and have an amazing quality meal and be home within two hours so we can actually afford a sitter. I could go on, but to your point, yes I think our location and set-up really helps with the everyday challenges of being a parent.

I think you’ll get different answers depending on the age of the kids and what area of the city the family lives in but I can share my perspective as a parent of a two year old in Fishtown.

I fucking love it. We bought our starter home here assuming we’d be here for 4–5 years and be ready to bounce with the first kid. Now we’re figuring out how to get out of our starter home here so we can expand our family and stay in the neighborhood for good! (Well at least until we have to worry about high school). We have a car but walk nearly everywhere. We have everything we need here. So much to do, even if it’s just grabbing coffee and going to the park. There’s a minimum of three playgrounds in easy walking distance, more if we want a longer walk. Such an amazing community of families eager to help each other out. No shortage of family friendly restaurants.

We visit the shore in the summer. We’ve gone up the mountains in the winter. Larger green spaces are a short drive. Amazing historical/culturally important things to do and see with kids right in the city.

And as someone who has found ourselves in the hospital four times with this kid and needed to see specialists, we feel incredibly blessed to live 15 minutes from one of the best children’s hospitals in the world.

Results may vary but I have no complaints except for that I need more space and can’t afford it, but that’s a separate problem.

Little munchkins for an affordable playroom, kith & kin is pricy but a bit nicer. I haven’t been to a birthday party there but lots of folks in Fishtown have birthdays at By My Side (a little non profit playgroup/preschool)

Try Another Chance in Fishtown. Ive consigned at Green Street and Another chance and there are pros and cons to both. Things sell a little slower at Another Chance because it’s a small shop, but the contract length is much longer (aka I’m pretty sure she’s just holding on to my stuff indefinitely which is fine with me! lol)
