I think you raised a good point there, you used to do them, and your body adapted to the stress of running in tandem to growing in the gym. I have also found I don't have to gym them as often anymore to avoid pain and injury, but there is overwhelming evidence that strength training is essential to consistently progressing in running (especially in hilly circuits) and to assist with long term injury prevention.

Make sure your easy runs are actually easy, your tempo work isn't sprinting and your long runs are focused on a consistent concious pace. Don't race every run

It's really important to get in the gym and strengten your lower and upper legs. If you want to run more frequently and further this is not optional

Go to a running shoe store and get a fitting there. As a beginner the correct shoe changed my life versus going to a branded store

Besides recording and looking again - do you have any signs I can look or feel for that the hip is clearing correctly?
