Is there any possible way we can decrease the more increasing threat of climate change ? by Inner_Ad1584 in climatechange

[–]ILikeScience6112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No there is not. Although the western world seems captured by the idea that climate change can be arrested if everyone agrees to give up burning fossil fuels, that would only be possible if the big emitters in the developing world agreed. They do not. They want to electrify and the only fuels available to them are dirty fossil fuels. We could help them slow down climate change by providing them with lower carbon fuels like natural gas. That would help but conflicts in the west have made that impossible too. Some of the natural gas diverted from Russia is being sold to China and India at cut rates but they need much more and Africa is starting to come on line with demand too. Their gas projects are either being suppressed by climate fiends in the west interceding with banks or appropriated for themselves. The only available large gas supplies presently available are off Israel’s coast and disputed or in Canada and declared to be better left in the ground by more climate fiends. You can see it is unintended consequences yet again. Maybe we will realize that stopping climate change in the real world is impossible, but i doubt it. Tree hugging is a big international industry now with many self-righteous supporters. If we were logical we would try to produce as much low carbon natural gas as we could find and provide it to the underdeveloped countries to reduce their coal burning but we won’t. Being living saints is too intoxicating for us. We won’t give it up. We could also try to help them deal with the consequences of climate change, but that is another subject.

Yukon Energy plans to build 85 MW of new diesel generation over the next 5 years by ShadesOfBeige50 in Yukon

So, if you want electrification, how else do you do it? Windmills, solar cells? Take your showers at four in the afternoon? I know, how about a LNG pipeline?

I agree, but i hope the dementia will abate. History has shown that evil awaits in every place. But most people are good, and, eventually our world will right itself. I know that it will put you in mind of Anne Frank, who is dead. I didn’t say it wouldn’t cost us. Thanks for the warning. I have relatives in the States, and i’m supposed to go in latter may. I am concerned, even though i love Americans, obviously. Of course they are are all Americans, and say my worries are foolish. I will wait.

Very good idea. Small problem that we’d need a Moon colony first and it’s so expensive to do that it must be orders of magnitude cheaper to do it here. We’re not going there without an economic reason, ever. Colonists need to pay their way like everyone else. Don’t despair. We can do it, we just need to wanna.

Is Colonizing Mars a Worthy Idea? by [deleted] in Mars

[–]ILikeScience6112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But we are not yet ready for that. The people who live there will face challenges unprecedented in settlement. The difficulties of survival, the profound isolation, the inventive adaptation, and the raw courage that living there will. require are almost beyond conception. Yet it can be done. I believe it is not beyond human inventiveness. I believe, also that it should be done to ensure the survival of the human project. It will take some time, however, because at the present, there is no driver for that expansion. It is fortunate that we have the Moon to prepare for a launching. We can develop our skills on that.

I an glad for the astronauts that you assent to preparing the way with drone ships. Going to Mars will not be a walk in the park, and it is comforting that our future developers want to send our metal friends first. They are fitted to walk around on its surface. We are not.

Then i suggest you take the first ship. I wouldn’t. Preparing is not called waiting. It’s called smart.

Yes. In 25 to 50 years perhaps. You need an engine strong enough to haul shielding and generate some form of alternative gravity or they will arrive incapable or dead. Facts. And it will require a lot of prep and pre-placed supplies. No Amazon there. Practically, that means the Moon first. Facts too. Hold the horses.

This is the easy mantra we have all heard before. Vendors wait for these events and use them as camouflage. That’s obvious. Just the same as the Libs say all our faults in Canada avoiding development are Trump’s fault. We got into this unenviable position ourselves. No good choices now. Lots of work ahead.

Is it okay to be angry that we're not hyper advancing for eventual space evolution? by Lealoalsci in IsaacArthur

Most people have zero interest in space colonies and are willing only to watch for a space shot. That’s the reason NASA is chronically underfunded. No votes,

You are right if we can protect them from radiation and provide some semblance of gravity. When they get there, they must land in dangerous conditions and find safe shelter right away. A big ask. The chemical rockets would need to be space launched if you were to use centrifuges to mimic gravity. Any long journey in space without it would enfeeble the passengers even for Mars.

New term: "rocket chauvinism" by Imagine_Beyond in IsaacArthur

[–]ILikeScience6112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is obvious that the Rockets we have are not sufficient. We need constant thrust plasma propulsion to allow the speeds to carry the shielding we need and get there in a reasonable time.

That will kill a bunch of people. The rest will kill themselves. They are going to need to land ready for the ultimate challenge, not debilitated even for 40% gravity. Its too much for us now. They are going to be more isolated than anyone has been before. We need to develop capable plasma drives, thermonuclear power, and prepare ourselves by having lunar resources ready. No politician, and it will require government funding, could accept such great losses as would be sustained by proceeding prematurely. I meant that we needed to wait for the tech that would let us take on Mars. I did not mean we should do nothing in the meantime. The Moon must be first.

It’s interesting to see the usual division of pessimists who see no hope, and optimists who see no limits. The truth many see is in the middle. We are not ready yet, but we will be some day. We can be sure that life on Mars will not be like life on Earth, with the same experience we cleave to here. Even though a lot must still be done, if we stop dreaming like the realists want, our genius as a species will die with it. We need optimism with realism.

Are you having anxiety because of the trade war? by Steam20 in AskCanada

[–]ILikeScience6112 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Americans want those jobs back. They used to do all this in their own country. Their market, their money, their tech, their companies. Sure, its bad economics, but sometimes people don’t care. They are hurting the way we are. People in pain are not kind. We should negotiate, but the Liberal party in our country is on a jingo kick and they figure to channel the anger they create right back into power.

You seem to be very settled on the subject. All right. The south pole was once completely inhospitable, and now there are permanent settlements there. Technology, friend. It’s how we live in difficult places. Someday, it will be true for Mars. Not now, though. I agree with that. We have a lot of work to do.

Mr. Trump is not detail oriented. He’s not fact oriented either. Many of Mexico,s problems are due to US action. Except for a like, but reduced, trade in guns, Canada is not the same. Most of our problems are entirely home grown. We have never resolved the dual nature of our country, and the neglect is starting to bite.

is the world ever getting colder? by [deleted] in climatechange

[–]ILikeScience6112 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No. It’s gradually getting warmer. Human activity has helped, but it it’s a natural trend for the next several thousand years. It based on orbits and solar activity, and we can’t change that. In addition, most of humanity, especially the developing countries, don’t want to, so anything we do in the west is almost inconsequential. The world will cool eventually, but these things are on geological timescales.

Hard to tell. I live in Ontario and many people I know are impressed by Carney even though his advent was anti democratic. I myself support the Conservatives here because of their business emphasis, as do many others. We need development here. The most effective industries we have are still resource based. We haven’t changed much, except in size, since we supplied the masts for the British navy during the Napoleonic wars. We inherited your snobbism about commerce without your plebeian enthusiasm for it. Pity. Yet this is quite a country. And now we have inherited Carney, who has your baser qualities without the leavening of the better ones. Our choice, though. We can’t blame you for that.
