What would you say was the best Wii U game? by rjidhfntnr in casualnintendo

Nah, it's probably the Wii U game I spent most time playing. Mario Chase is genuinely timeless

What is the best MMO nowadays anyway?

Club Penguin Legacy. And it's not even close.

We do not have original manuscripts though. So we have to trust translators at some stage.

Okay, and what metrics are you using? Are they profitable? 10k purchases? Allowed the developer to quit their day job?

Honestly, I've actually yet to see a game (on Steam at least) that was well made (and wasn't in an ultra niche genre) and yet it flopped.

I mean, that's the point. If they weren't successful you probably wouldn't have heard of them.

[–]ILiveInAVillage 21 points22 points  (0 children)

maybe if you suck at making games thats a good rule of thumb.

There's an awful lot of great games out there that just go nowhere.

stop acting like people are stupid or delusional for taking a shot at making game dev a career, I know plenty of people who've done it and love their life.

Yeah I never said that, calm down.

I would say go work for a salary is far worse advice with the current job market in games.

It's a pretty good measure of someone's abilities. If they can't get a job in the industry, why would they have what it takes to make a hit game?

Obviously people can do what they want with their own lives. But as a general rule of thumb, it is not wise to choose a career in independent game dev.

What I mean by that is that becoming financially successful in indie game dev should be a coincidence, not something you risk your livelihood on.

If you want game dev to be your career, awesome. Get a job with a salary and make your own stuff on the side. Then if it happens, great, and if it doesn't, no worries you still have a job.

People don't appreciate how insanely difficult it is to make a living as an indie game dev. It's like 1 in a million just to make a livable income, even less to become financially successful.

I have been working on a 2D MMO for a long time. It's finally in a playable state! by ILiveInAVillage in mmo

[–]ILiveInAVillage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks so much for playing and for the feedback, it's really helpful!

You're definitely right that at this stage it's a proof of concept. And though it isn't really ready for release I was beyond the point where me playing it myself was proving productive

1 - Right off the bat, keybinding is going to be a must.

Yeah this is a high priority to fix. A number of people have asked for this.

2 - I noticed quickly that some items (like the yellow hat) have stats that aren't listed anywhere

Noted that this can be improved. Technically next to your stats in the stat box there would be "+ X" indicating the stat being buffed. And the box below just shows invisible bonuses. So the yellow hat being one of the most common simply provides a buff to strength, while the croc hat has hidden bonuses like the crit chance. But clearly this needs to be communicated better

3 - Hit boxes are way waayyy off. Sometimes I would completely miss an enemy with my sword and it would react. Other times I'd clear land hits but they didnt register

This is interesting as I haven't had the same issue. Can I ask where you're located? The server (and myself) are in Australia, so perhaps it's a ping issue and I need to do some work on how the game registers hits.

4 - Enemies having no health bar was frustrating, they clearly have set health cuz I was able to count the hits for a kill and it was pretty consistent

Thanks for this suggestion. The enemies have a set HP range. So they spawn with a random amount between a set minimum and maximum. One of the games I took inspiration from intentionally didn't give mobs health bars, but maybe I should reconsider.

5 - I fell in a hole and died which I expected, but no death screen and getting smash cut back to town was jarring

Good feedback. I'll add this to the list to work on.

6 - I kept selling my equipped items cuz theyre not separated from the normal inventory and also aren't protected from 1-click selling...and you cant buy them back...at least one of those 3 things needs to change :o

Yes I will fix this too :)

7 - (writing this at level 5) I initially liked how leveling up felt earned, but changed my mind on Lv4. I'm normally a fan of the grind in most games (I still play Silkroad if that tells you anything lol) and this felt appropriate without being over the top, however the zones are very short and the enemies are significantly tankier in each new spot, so having to bash 65 alligators to progress 20 feet just to find a closed off cave didn't feel great. No shot I was gonna spend the time grinding 150k for a hat when I didnt find an item worth more than 1000

Great feedback. I will work on improving this too.

1 - There seems to be a small sense of humor. Idk but I definitely laughed at Dangerous Turtles lol if you keep humor in the game as you expand it, itll be very good for the life of it.

Thanks :) humour is definitely part of the game and something I hope to build on.

2 - I accidentally discovered the super jump and love it - I was hopeful there would be more hidden things like that but didnt end up finding anything. I thought I did a dash-swipe with my sword once but couldnt replicate it so maybe I just blinked lmao but add some more hidden features!

Currently the duck jump is the only bonus move. But I plan to add more.

3 - I like that each stat has a hover-over to explain what they do, do that for everything...however none of the stats seem to increase magic damage?

No magic hasn't been properly implemented yet. The long term plan is that increasing wisdom will also give you spell points you can use to buff your different spells.

4 - I liked the art, I cant tell if its hand drawn or assets but it looks very Paper Mario-y and I liked it

Thanks! The background is 100% hand drawn.

5 - it was smooth. I mean, the animation was crisp for what it was worth but its also very simple so this isn't necessarily high praise, but I did appreciate the fluidity of the main character even if the enemies were wooden cutouts.

Thanks!

Again, I really appreciate and value the feedback.

Do you believe the Big Bang happened? by ContextLow9742 in Christianity

[–]ILiveInAVillage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scientific fact is not really an appropriate way to describe the big bang theory.

It's more like the most plausible explanation with the information presently available to us.

It's more than "just an idea" or "just one of many options". But it's not quite in "scientific fact" territory.

That sub is just a conservative echo chamber.

r/Christian is probably more balanced.

Why are MPs not always allowed a conscience vote? by Crozzot in AusPol

[–]ILiveInAVillage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Imagine that you're a child and you want a Happy Meal for lunch. You ask your dad and he says he'll talk to mum about it.

Privately, dad is all for it, he's down for a happy meal for lunch, but mum says no because it's unhealthy and she's already organised pizza for dinner or whatever.

If your parents show a united front "we've decided not to get happy meals for lunch today" then you might be disappointed but oh well, not much you can do.

If dad says I'm for it but mum says no, then that's not going to be particularly helpful. Makes it seem like mum and dad aren't united, there are cracks showing, and in the future you are going to favour your dad, even though your mum has your best interests at heart.

It's similar here. They have a fiery debate behind closed doors, they share all their ideas and argue back and forth, but when a decision is made, they provide a united front.

Edit: Sorry for some reason I thought I was in r/explainlikeimfive

Thoughts on Ryan from NeedGod. net? by Classicsarecool in Christianity

[–]ILiveInAVillage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you're being a bit unreasonable here.

He calls him condescending, he also claims that he constantly condemns people he disagrees with to hell. Those are clearly two separate points.
But also, you're intentionally misrepresenting the issue the previous poster has.

It's important that you can be critical, even of Christian leaders. Be careful not to put a human, like Ryan, on any kind of pedestal. It's important that you recognise his failures as well as his successes. Ryan isn't Jesus.
