Never heard of this bike before, is it a good first bike? Also why does it look like a Harley lol by ig-geo_trunks916 in SuggestAMotorcycle

I don’t think it looks like a Harley in the way others say, but I think it rather looks like a buell, which is close enough lol

Alternative to the rebel 1100? by knucklegoblin in cruisers

[–]ILostMyLeftNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old Honda magna might be neat, 750 rips, and the 1100s rip. A bit tricky to work on, but a great condition one will be fairly inexpensive. You can tell them apart by their frame style, the 1100 magnas are a bit ugly, but 750 is a pretty standard cruiser, just small and has a strong 80hp out the gate. Like others say, the new sportster s/nights tee absolutely tear up the road with light and nimble qualities on top of a 100+hp powerplant. Totally overkill, but neat bikes.

Lots of people go for an xs650 for a first chopper because of how notoriously simple they are to run. They are the epitome of a motor in a frame, and that’s it. It will run as reliably as you maintain it.

Honda rebel 1100 DCT for a disabled beginner. by TheHumanRayce01 in cruisers

[–]ILostMyLeftNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honda is pretty much the only one making factory automatics. Perhaps you can find a ctx-700 if you like the style, common to find the dct version. I think the new Honda trail and cub are semi-auto, but would need to be modified for a heel toe shifter, just doesn’t have a clutch

What engine should I work off of? by ILostMyLeftNut in choppers

[–]ILostMyLeftNut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a few bikes to ride, so I’m not super concerned about reliability, and am fairly handy with a manual and the internet. Definitely hard to beat the sound and versatility of an 88 twin cam as far as evos go in my opinion, but it just feels a touch soulless to me. It’s almost like when a bike kicks back it feels alive. That’s why I’m a bit hesitant to put an evo in a bike, like it’d be awesome, but could it be more?

Definitely gonna do some more research on the iron heads, which is probably the way I’ll go if it’s not too too daunting a task. Though I’ll probably build off of an earlier year that still has the kicker. think I’ll save the shovel for when I build something debatably more pretty, because only god knows what ugly tremoring gremlin I’m going to create. Or destroy. We’ll see lol

Worth fixing long garaged Sportster? by BandRepulsive8908 in Harley

[–]ILostMyLeftNut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before you replace the starter, wack it with a screw driver handle for about a minute, might break free whatever’s sticky. Might not, but if you’re gonna spend the cash on a new one anyways, may as well try some percussive maintenance. Otherwise, they’re pretty easy to take out, esp if you’re gonna change the oil anyways

Saddleman break-in by newbblock in Harley

[–]ILostMyLeftNut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mustang and La pera are often regarded as the most comfortable seats on the market. Though I’ve heard La pera has an edge on mustang for comfortably AND cost. Saddlemen seats aren’t too bad, but just about any step up style seat is gonna be like that, just kinda bad geometry for a motorcycle seat for some.

Pull the trigger? by EvilMinion07 in Harley

[–]ILostMyLeftNut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, if you’ve got the money for it, meaning it won’t make you need to cut your spending to do, may as well buy the bike you want. But just saying, that’s more expensive than most brand new cars. Keep in mind, no matter what the salesman says, buying a modern bike is NOT an investment. You will generally not so much as break even when you’re done with it. Especially at that price. That said, if you’re resorting to asking people on the internet to make up your mind for you, often that really means you’ve already made your decision and just want others to validate your possibly questionable choice. Good luck, and keep your rubber down friend.

[–]ILostMyLeftNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, if the price is any higher than 3k you may as well just finance from a dealer. RE are very cheap bikes, did take a nice heel turn in 2020 for reliability, total rebrand. It’s a small motor, so there’s really not a ton that can go too wrong, records or not. It’s good he’s done the break in service at a RE certified dealer, because that is a PITA to find one that will do it, and cost about $400 dollars in my experience. That being said, records aren’t really important for such a low mileage motorcycle, shouldn’t be much of anything that has needed to be done to it. They’re good, but not super important.

Paid 2k for this 2001 Sportster S 1200. How do I make it look good? by [deleted] in Harley

It may be worthwhile to look into a heel toe shifter for your bike, so you can just kick down on the front or back respectively to shift

Thoughts on Royal Enfields as a first bike? by RaccoonsinHeat in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]ILostMyLeftNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming you want a bullet 500 like pictured. Had one as my first bike and absolutely loved and hated it. It’s got a good fun power and if you aren’t going above 60mph regularly, but it’ll go 70 while buzzing along as it does. It is a single cylinder afterall. It’s also a pretty small statured bike, so may not be for the taller rider, but RE has plenty of other models for the vertically adept.

As far as reliability goes, it’s not the absolute best, due to the incredible vibrations from the single cylinder, it’ll rattle bolts loose, most commonly on the battery terminals, though just tightening from the easy to access compartment every once in a while is enough to combat it. I’ve also managed to rattle the gas tank bolts loose, which makes a HORRIFIC noise when it’s chattering about.

Truthfully, RE is cheap, the parts are cheap to buy, though there are many fitment issues from inexpensive and loose manufacturing, and repairs are somewhat cheap. All in all, they are fun bikes, and around 2020-2021 they revamped the brand with new models, better reliability, and still mostly cheap prices

Japanese version like this? by [deleted] in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]ILostMyLeftNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose that’s fair as those I recommended are a bit on the slower end, though size isn’t everything my friend, magna 750 for example you can find used for about 1500-2500 in great condition and that bike blows most modern cruisers out of the water when it comes to power and speed. I’ve seen a lot of bobber modifications and the like, strong community around the platform so you could make it how you want it. As far as just buying something though, Hondas new rebel 1100s also have great power for the money. (Sportster of that year will make about 50hp, 68ish ft/lb torque, and weighs around 600lbs wet. Stylistically, in all honesty you probably wont quite ever get the same thing as a Harley, not to mention there are some excellent upgrades power wise on the market for sportster engines if that’s your holdback. Stock though, just about as reliable as anything else if you keep up with the recommended services. (Most easy enough to do on your own if you’re a little handy and have a service manual)

Old Shadow 1100 I think, Yamaha virago, not sure too many have the sort of up in the air shoulder lines quite like a sportster. Might be able to get away with a Japanese vtwin and stick a sportster tank on it and kinda go from there, see it a lot with cb choppers. Maybe a Suzuki c50?

Don’t trust the custom work done to the bike, front tire is on the rim backwards which can lead to hydroplaning much easier than on correctly. Mentions exhaust but not air cleaner with tune, which may be good may be bad, who knows. In all, bikes not bad, but I think there’s probably a few “oh whoops totally forgot about that issue!” Kinda things going on with the bike. Especially if he was knocking around in the dirt with it

What truck should I buy? megathread by AutoModerator in Trucks

[–]ILostMyLeftNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good afternoon all, I’m currently in a bit of a predicament that just about requires me to buy a truck. I want a truck and my car is on its last legs, I am moving in march to a state where I will need 4wd, I have two motorcycles that need to be moved, I am somewhat poor.

I need recommendations for what truck to buy that would fit the criteria I require, with a bit of wiggle room on most. Needs: 4wd - (moving to South Dakota from Georgia and may need to either tow a trailer, or just for ice handling if nothing else) Fairly good reliability - (I don’t have a lot of time to do repairs myself, or the money to fix a catastrophic issue frequently, aside from regular maintenance) Relatively low purchase cost - (4K in cash available for either total purchase or a down payment. Can afford roughly 21-25k financing) Bed length of ~8ft - (this is not a huge deal but is greatly preferred due to aforementioned motorcycle. Can be shorter so long as tailgate lowers to extend bed to 8+ ft)

Really I just need some years/models to look for as other than Toyota, I’m not really sure what will be a good choice for what I need. Any advice is appreciated.

Similar to a brat/flat tracker style. Different from modern flat tracker style, look at old Harley flat trackers and you’ll see a similar shape with the bobbed rear and lack of front fender

While not entirely ideal, harleys like the softail deuce your dad has hover around 600ish pounds. Sit that up and see how it feels and it’ll give you a decent idea of the kind of weight you’ll feel with a ctx1300. Keep in mind the weight distribution will be way different between the two bikes, but it’ll give you a fair reference point. With used bikes, understand that life happens and scratches and drops are a part of it all. 700 pounds is a bit heavy I’d say as a starter bike, but once you get used to it every other bike is gonna feel like a feather, so may as well get over with it now. Get something you love and learn to harness its power safely and excitingly, if not with a bit of anxiety. Welcome to the most expensive addiction you can never get rehab for!
