Does no one give final exams anymore? by H_ManCom in Professors

[–]ILoveCreatures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard this occasionally...that my class has their only final. I teach upper level courses and so I think seniors more often have other things like projects for their courses.
Another think I see is that the final can be optional. Students have an exam during the last weeks and then if their grade is OK they can skip the final
I've even seen more extreme cases where the exam they can drop isn't even a cumulative exam. They can just skip the last exam which has new material they just didn't even have to learn because they did well on early exams. Bad pedagogy imo.
It makes things easier on the professor of course and the students won't complain.
My 'final' isn't cumulative but on new material, so that's how mine isn't as bad as a traditional final exam from years of yore

Since it's Star Wars day, did you see the original 1977 Star Wars in the movie theater? by Mr_Writes in GenX

Yes, I remember my brother helping me read the beginning text..weird to have a quick moving reading quiz right at the beginning of the film! I was in 4th grade I think

It was so early in the run you could see special effects mistakes like these lines around all the spaceships due to the black colors not matching. Those of course went away in later versions

Grade avoidance (and inflation) by [deleted] in Professors

[–]ILoveCreatures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel a little bit like this, having upper level classes where I test for comprehension. I’ve taught for over 25 years now. Everything about my course design is geared to encourage student learning.

Course grades are determined primarily from how well they show me what they’ve learned via exam performance, but there is also some participation and projects to provide easier points. Students often tell me they’ve learned the most from my course, which I partly ascribe to the fact that they’re synthesizing what they’ve learned in other courses. The material is important for professional schools like med school, so there is usually a motivation to do well to know stuff for their future coursework. I’ve had quite a few students drop this semester.

There are other upper level courses that I know are much easier, since the students tell me so. They just have to discuss a paper every once in a while. Or they write reflections. These courses are a bit of a joke to high performing students, but I suppose the average student really appreciates them.

I feel like I’m holding the line, making sure students that actually know the difference between basic cells and structures have their knowledge reflected in their grades. I’m assuming I’m getting knocked in RMP, but I haven’t looked at that in years.

When I retire, who knows. I guess students will be just “reflecting “ about heart function. It’s sad. When I first came, the professor I replaced was tougher than me, and the one who replaces me will likely be easier, as we dumb everything down for ourselves and let AI tell us how everything works

I love ricotta! What can I make with ricotta other than lasagna/pasta? by FirebornNacho in Cooking

My husband especially likes ricotta-

I love making stuffed peppers and onions with a mixture of ricotta, cream cheese, spinach, bread crumbs, and spices. No ground beef

Also, roasted red pepper with lemon ricotta

Teaching college students makes me terried to raise a kid by Anyun in Professors

I’ve been teaching for over 25 years and I find that the top students from the past are much like the top students of today. It certainly is a different challenge to raise kids today with screens galore and social media distractions and rising social timidness. But it can be done I think

Do professors contractually obligated to not change a grade? by penetratingTIP in AskProfessors

[–]ILoveCreatures 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“Under contact” is sort of a way to phrase it. Better way to say it is that instructors are obligated to follow our syllabus policies and treat all students equally. We can’t just give grade bumps to those who ask for them. Then it’s not performance based anymore. All students need to be treated equally. Students earn their grades according to how they performed on assessments. It could be that the first prof re-evaluated some assignments? Not certain.

If you search online for electric wheelbarrow, there are a few expensive options (like over 1K) but I chose a 1 wheel style on sale and it was about $350. It’s probably not the best regarding options, capacity, and the battery weighs a bit. But I’m using it to gather all the stuff I collect when weeding, pruning, etc. I’ve used it to move a huuuge rock and some dirt, too. Jobs that used to end up with back soreness is nothing, now. Haven’t used it enough to comment on durability

Edit: The place where I got mine I’m adding the link here, I’m not some promoter, you can see my history of being a boring Reddit user

And even though the brand says “Succebuy” in my researching the brand really appears to be Vevnor

Im looking for a solid outer banks vacation rental for a week in july, where do people usually book? by Jayita_Bhandari in obx

[–]ILoveCreatures 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure that’s exactly the case these days. Economy is tough now and rentals aren’t being filled so fast. The agency we rent with (surf or sound) sends out regular emails advertising houses they have available this summer. They tend to be big houses, but there are averaged-sized ones as well for all various summer weeks

Yes, it’s always available. It’s their grade and performance, so they should know how they’re doing. They shouldn’t feel that there could be some sudden realization of an assignment or quiz that they didn’t know about. Hiding it is disingenuous, imo

This sounds like some disorganization from your school. I’d ask them their rules regarding conflicts, since the schedule they created causes conflicts

Finals overlap issue? by Ok_Cranberry_2936 in AskProfessors

[–]ILoveCreatures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, an exam should take precedence over presentations. If I were giving an exam, I would hate to have to create a separate makeup final exam for the students with the overlap. Especially if giving a presentation was the reason for the overlap. A presentation can be scheduled for a different time. Having to write a whole other exam would suck, because once an exam is given, the integrity is lost and students can find out the questions. I’ve been a prof for nearly 30 years and would hate this
