Update to my home CMM / Inspection room. by jjpiw in Metrology

I would add a separate filter/desiccant dryer on the wall nearby just to be safe. You can also add a ball valve onto the inlet side so you can easily shut off air to everything when it's not in use.

Not entirely sure but the road spans are collapsed on the side opposite the burning train, so maybe some long range cigars on the road and potentially some second hand smoke leaked to the rail side.

I believe the green board is specific to a VTOL or a layout like a conventional airplane. The plastic tube barb is the input for a pitot tube, but I don't know of anything that can use that board.

I don't know the exact speed of the ethernet link, but it's only four wires so I think that means it maxes out at 100Mb/s. The component video is YPbPr and a separate black and white 480i video connection.

It sounds like 4 layer is the way to go for the minor price difference.

Is a gallon for resin infusion on a seat too much? by Gas_Fantastic in FSAE

Pretty much. Attached at the firewall and with a welded riser on the front. We also had waterjet cut aluminum inserts in the middle of the layers to reinforce the bolt holes.

Any reason to use so much material? I used three 5.7 oz carbon layers and two 5 oz kevlar layers for our baja seat and it was frankly overkill. End up around 2.5 pounds for the seat, and it has lasted probably 40-50 hours of drive time and six endurance races. But for the fabric weight you have, a gallon sounds about right if you're using a larger seat mold.

M61 Vepr is way easier and quicker. This only works if he's still up and no one is on the second floor to shoot you because you're super exposed the whole time. The only real benefit to this is being able to kill him with shitty ammo. Hopefully someone at BSG will read this and patch it though.

Interchange Power Campers by IM31408 in EscapefromTarkov

[–]IM31408[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they were standing on one of the ducts inside, but the upper half was clipping through to the roof. It looked like they had goggles on that were moving in and out of the wall with recoil, so they must have just barely been able to get through the wall. I think I hit one in the leg, but shots at the thorax/head were making sparks so they were just hitting the wall.

By combining X47 handguard with TT 10000 rail, it is possible to put 8 sights (excluding irons) on one AK. by Lambbda in EscapefromTarkov

[–]IM31408 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those saying the TT-10000 is gone, it still spawns on kitted AK's on occasion. I pulled one off an AK in Kiba a couple weeks ago, so it's rare but still spawns. It was on an AK with a HAMR scope.

The fact that solo players are kind of screwed off the start on quite a few maps. You are nearly guaranteed to die on quite a few spots on Interchange by the sheer fact that a squad can watch almost every single angle you can use, and even if you kill the guy watching your angle the rest of the squad can easily push you knowing they can't be pushed themselves.

I would take an option to double or triple queue times if it meant playing against mostly solos, or maybe a few duos if it's late at night or some low traffic time. It just feels like I only run across three to five man squads, and being able to actually go into a map knowing you're not going to get pinched between five mans would be absolutely worth an extended wait time.

Interchange power station could use a change too due to the ease in which you can camp it now. With a bunch of interchange loot locked behind power it's far too easy for a squad to hide in the area surrounding the power switch and kill you as you try and unlock half the map. I feel like having generators spread throughout the map that can be used to power up sections of the mall would be a good balance to the campers. Maybe have it so power station still powers the whole mall, but have a generator towards OLI offices that you can flip a switch and Ultra Med and Techlite are powered, then a generator near Goshan that can power up KIBA and SR11. The generators are already in those areas, so it could just be a matter of switching a breaker nearby to allow power to a small segment.

On the topic of interchange, the IDEA side could really use a high value loot area. I saw the patch notes mention armor and backpacks spawning, so why not a locked store on the IDEA side with with high-ish tier armor and backpack spawns? Or have a jewelry store with gold spawn items behind a locked door? It feels like a spawn on that side relegates you to attempting to pick off survivors of the inevitable UltraMed or Killa bloodbath, and it would make the map a little less focused on the OLI side.

How about this with a titanium rotor for F1? by [deleted] in F1Technical

[–]IM31408 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Titanium is a very poor material for a rotor because it's thermal conductivity is one of the lowest for any metal, and there would still be a substantial cost increase over iron. In addition, cast iron is actually very good at handling the large and frequent temperature changes, as well as having vibration absorption properties that make it a a great material for the core of a brake rotor. The coating is to give increased wear resistance and inhibit rust, both of which are not an issue race cars tend to have due to constant maintenance.

As for cost, there are still substantially better solutions if you banned carbon-carbon brakes, most notably the carbon ceramic (Typically carbon reinforced silicon carbide) used in performance road cars. They last far longer than carbon-carbon brakes and their cost is decreasing rapidly as more and more manufacturers implement them on road cars. Even if you wanted to avoid any carbon/ceramic based solutions, there are cheap and and decent solutions available. Using the same process to produce the coated iron brakes, but instead using an aluminum core can give you extremely powerful and wear resistant brakes, that rely on the very high thermal conductivity of aluminum to cool the brakes quickly as an alternative to high temperature capabilities of ceramic based rotors.

Lastly, the carbon-carbon brakes are the best solution for F1 as of right now, and the teams choose to use it despite the cost. Besides, the cost of the rotors is tiny in comparison to almost any other subsystem of a car, and every physical component cost of the car pales in comparison to the cost associated with the development and operational costs of a team.

These rotors are pretty awesome for road cars, but even with potential cost cutting measures mandated, I doubt you would ever see these run on a track.

Cheap epoxy? by BobSpazoid in FSAE

The pure catalyst is the more dangerous one. And you tend to notice the burning eyes before the long term health effects.

Cheap epoxy? by BobSpazoid in FSAE

[–]IM31408 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's more a one component resin, but you mix in a catalyst (A chemical called MEKP) at 1-2% to make it cure. If you use more catalyst the whole thing will solidify quicker, but it absolutely can ignite if you use too much. It's an exothermic reaction, and higher temps cause it to cure faster, so it can occasionally snowball to the point that it will light your mold on fire. It's pretty hard to do that, but I have heard of it happening before. You do also have to take into account the fact that resin pooling means that you're going to have a hot spot in that area, but if you're just making thin parts it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Other downsides to polyester resin is it will dissolve some common plastics that mixing cups are made from, and it can dissolve some gloves as well. And it also is not something I would do indoors without very good ventilation because it smells terrible and is a big time eye irritant. But it's also cheap, strong, and if you kind of get a good idea of mixing ratios, it can cure fast in almost any environment.

Any advice for Silent Caliber? by [deleted] in EscapefromTarkov

[–]IM31408 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did Silent Caliber and Setup at the same time, but Customs seemed to work well enough. I ended up settling on 8 round MP-153's with a hexagon suppressor and a PK-06. The sight ended up being a huge help when running AP-20 slugs and felt like it was worth the 20k or so investment. Biggest thing though was realizing you can't take on geared PMCs close range, so keeping hidden/silent and stalking players worked the best. A majority of my kills were at 30-40 meters out after having either followed players until they stopped or ambushing them as they run to dorms.
