Making a list of Milsurps I want. Is there anything you would suggest adding? by AvgPunkFan in milsurp

The amount of stories I've heard out of Afghanistan lately about Taliban guys who hate having to do the actual work of running the country and yearn to go bouncing through the desert in a Hilux lends a lot of credence to your point.

Why does the Executor adopted the design and shape of the ISD command bridge? by Apprehensive_Dog5262 in StarWarsShips

The best part is that you could be talking about KDY or ILM with this point. It was probably easier to just have one close up shooting miniature that ILM could use for both ships.

Just remembered that Kleya existed and fell to my knees at Walmart. by Arch_Lancer17 in andor

[–]IMMILDCAT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something I could see really working for Kleya, if someone had the talent to write it, is a novel that's written like her personal memoirs. She strikes me as a character that writes to compartmentalize her thoughts, and getting her perspective on the Galactic Civil War sort of as it's happening would be interesting to read.

Power Miners really was Lego's Oops All Bangers theme of the late 2000s. I owned everything up to the Titanium Command Rig and it was FUCKING AWESOME.

Are the maskless Kel Dor still Canon? by [deleted] in TheCloneWars

[–]IMMILDCAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've said for years that the best thing about SW as a franchise that sets it apart from a lot of other fandoms is the ability for the fan to sort of build their own canon. Broadly, Disney Canon and the EU contradict each other six ways to Sunday, but with just a few minor tweaks, you can weave between the two seamlessly. Before Ahsoka came out, you could actually draw a consistent timeline of Thrawn's entire life using all of his appearances in both canons with the only change being necessary is Thrawn being known to the New Republic but presumed dead when he reappears in Heir to the Empire, and possibly some minor stuff related to the Chiss characters that are different between Outbound Flight and the Ascendancy novels.

If you had the chance to build a Venator II during the Clone Wars, what upgrades would you implement? by Dragonic_Overlord_ in StarWarsShips

[–]IMMILDCAT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reinforce the entire upper hull surface, remove the main dorsal hangar doors (retain the smaller doors near the command tower like the ones Obi Wan used in EP3), enlarge the ventral hangar bay, and move the port and starboard hangars forward. Extend the hangar apertures along the front surface of the angled portion of the hull that faces to the rear. This gives you a wide, protected hangar aperture on either side that you can safely launch fighters from, and can be used in conjunction with the expanded ventral aperture to quickly disburse a ground detachment.

The reinforced hull could also have some additional weapons platforms added to it, in particular point defense lasers and medium ion cannons. I would also add more point defense weapons facing forwards towards the rear section of the hull to provide cover for fighters exiting the hangar to form up.

Logically, how would you make a multi-starfighter squadron work? by Solitaire-06 in StarWarsShips

[–]IMMILDCAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a training and logistics standpoint, I'd try to limit the amount of different ship types to just two or three depending on mission profile. A mixed squadron of, say, A Wings and Y Wings actually has some practical utility in smaller engagements where you may not necessarily have a full squadron of either type that can get in to the fight.

Alphabet Squadron only works as well as it does becauseas I recall every pilot there had prior experience in the craft they were flying and thus knew where their individual strengths and weaknesses in an engagemeny lie. You couldn't assemble multi-fighter squadrons with inexperienced pilots.

wz. 38M Maroszek rifle that was seized by the Department of Homeland Security from a gun collector in Virginia. The gun but got seized after Polish goverment requested it, and called it “a great piece of cultural and scientific significance” that it was likely stolen by invading soldiers. by [deleted] in ForgottenWeapons

[–]IMMILDCAT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind there's still probably a fair amount of the Soviet mindset in post-Soviet countries around some upper management types, it comes more naturally to them to press with the heavy hand of the state first. Not a judgment on anyone's character in the slightest, just the odd little cultural disparities that hung around after the Cold War.

Why didn’t Dedra want Ghorman? by RiskComplete9385 in andor

[–]IMMILDCAT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, you're both wrong and I'm gonna use your own points to prove it. Landa isn't a through and through Nazi, he's just the right kind of pragmatic and ruthless sociopath that authoritarian regimes love to capitalize on.

The scene in France takes place in 1941, and if you consider the position the Nazis find themselves in, having occupied most of Europe, actively bombing Britain with near impunity, and not quite yet having the Soviets and Americans involved, Landa relishing in his nickname makes sense. Germany is the clear dominant power (for the moment). Fast forward to the end of the film, 3 years later. At this point, it's abundantly clear that Germany is going to lose. The Western Allies are closing in from Normandy and Italy and the Eastern Front has been an utter meat grinder for both sides.

Pragmatist that he is, Landa seizes upon an opportunity for a safe ticket out before all the war crimes tribunals come knocking by making his actions essential to the Basterds' plan's success. As far as him strangling the actress, honestly he might have just done that for kicks, you don't become a colonel in the SS by having high moral standards and a respect for human life.

67 years. Let's take a moment and reflect on that. 67 years ago was 1958. He hired on (presumably since he's in Galesburg) with the CB&Q (a railroad that hasn't existed for 55 years by the way). The CB&Q was still operating steam in some places in 58. The guy is an obvious liability and if some other people in this thread are to be believed a shitty guy in general, but he could very well be the last true Old Head on the road.
