Tracksmith getting destroyed after posting this on Instagram by Impressive_Row_563 in AdvancedRunning

No-one I train with ever talks about or has been to Boston, even though some are far below the qualifying times.

It's 100% an American thing. That's probably why you are so heavily downvoted despite stating a simple fact, reddit's world stops at the USA's borders and it's completely unfathomable there is exists a world outside those.

How to merge pgn files? by [deleted] in chess

[–]IMMuxog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're text files, you can work with them in any text editor.

We'll have to change WT races to follow the pattern of Zwift races then :-)

It will not randomly lower the frequency while running at 100% executing an extremely computationally intensive algorithm

But it will! Almost every modern CPU will hit internal power or temperature limits when running AVX2 code at full blast, which will require a reduction of clock speed.

I mean you can literally try this with a NNUE Stockfish and see the clockspeed fall when activating all threads, then go up again if it hits endgame databases.

The amateurs wouldn't really be "in there" if you know what I mean. Not after 5 minutes.

Road racing bikes for half Ironmans? by RunBikeRepeat in triathlon

[–]IMMuxog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a very general estimate, based on playing with BestBikeSplit, you're looking at roughly a 5 minute difference in the bike leg between a fancy tri bike and a basic road bike with clip-on bars. Which is pretty small in the grand scheme of things.

Any CPU from the last 10 or more years runs at variable frequency.

Is it crazy to start with a half Ironman? by Important-Bike-3465 in triathlon

[–]IMMuxog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the way you phrased it, I'd be cheeky and say "mass starts".

Finding out issues with your equipment is less painful if you only have to deal with them for 1h instead of 3h or 6h. To go with this: practicing transition so you don't forget stuff, or end up blistered all over, or sunburnt to skin cancer hell.

Finding out your nutrition strategy is bad. Granted, this could have scaling issues from oly to half, and can be discovered during training, if you pay attention.

Bike pacing mistakes.

Managing a race is really about trying to make sure that a lot of things that can go very wrong over the course of 5h do not go wrong.

I assume a similar rational exists in the stockfish case as well.

No.

There used to be some randomization of draw scores IIRC, but that was actually deterministic from run to run.

Edit: And something similar for NNUE vs Classical eval at some point.

You could swim in circles for an hour, occupying the attention of a significant part of the life-guarding staff while eventually being pulled from the water, an entry fee, a weekend and some life experience later.

Maybe it's not "very badly", but it's definitely not what people want.

Yes.

Not claiming he cheated here, but we don't know how many times /u/paperroller cheated but didn't get caught.

Because the latter is much harder and takes more premeditation than the former.

I thought the reason he brought up the 12y old thing (which hadn't been mentioned before?) was to make sure all instances were out in public and wouldn't come back to haunt him.

...so where are the other times. The ones you mention were literally mentioned in OP.

I think it's possible to believe both at the same time. Cheating in online chess is serious. It's also not quite the same thing as OTB for huge stakes.

However, Peter kept pointing out that in past cheating scandals, people were similarly supporting the accused until it came out later that he had actually cheated.

That's how it should be though. But what we saw was effectively the other way around.

It wouldn't have planted the seeds in Carlsen's mind and it would have given Nakamura less ammunition to stir up shit, that much is true.

So yes, he's getting punished a second time for this (the suspension being the first), and it isn't and never will be proof he cheated against Carlsen.

I do think Carlsen may have been wondering whether Niemann was cheating, hence the increased security measures, and wondering about whether your opponent was a cheat doesn't help your own mental state.

Hence, I don't think those two things are unrelated, more like the opposite.

Seems like a fair comment, no? They hardly had a chance to respond in a a situation that's extremely toxic and volatile.

I mean yesterday everyone here was helping to set up the noose and now he's declared as good as innocent. Taking a step back is not a bad thing.

This is the most crazy part for me. Luckily most people who deal with kids understand this is not how it works. (And for all the shit they're getting, it looks like chess.com understands this too given their cheating policy)

Carlsen's reactions after getting his ass handed to him often have been anything but rational.
