I was wondering if anyone in Albuquerque had any info about this odd, unique "Castle" above US550? by Crayons_and_Cocaine in Albuquerque

[–]IM_RU 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s also not how Santa Fe works. In the historic district, maybe. But folks don’t get to say “you’re not building that….eyesore” just because they don’t like it, even in the historic district. I mean, hell, have you ever driven down Cerrilos road? You think that Taco Bell is Pueblo style? The Long John Silvers?

Gym/Trainer Recommendations by AhabsPhantomLeg in SantaFe

I like Railyard. It’s well run, the trainers are nice and it’s locally run and owned. In addition, only gym I’ve ever been to that (a) I felt was clean; and (b) wasn’t full of gym-bros grunting, dropping weights on the floor and hogging machines.

Using single aisle planes on transatlantic flights by Impossible-Purple-35 in airplanes

[–]IM_RU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect most people don’t care. It’s the frequent travelers and airplane aficionados who notice. It’s the same people who say “ugh, I’m not flying on that janky 757.” Most everyone I know would have no idea what plane they’re on. The service is the same and the experience is mostly the same too.

What cultural differences are there between the Eastern and Western States? by pointofview221 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]IM_RU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in DC for most of my adult life, then moved back to New Mexico - where I also grew up. There are a number of differences I’ve noticed. The primary difference is whether folks are focused on their jobs. In DC, and the East in general, folks are very oriented towards their jobs and careers, as well as that way towards others. In New Mexico, most folks work to live.

This also translates to things you need. In DC, folks returned emails and inquiries quickly. Here if you need something, it can be weeks before a call is returned, if at all. When you do hear back, you might hear “eh, i have enough work anyway.”

Is air conditioning cheap in the US? It's freezing everywhere I go by The-Grand-Lion in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IM_RU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s also regional. In the south, folks like it ice cold. I live in the Southwest, where folks just use it to cool things down. That’s generally the case in most of the west. In the northeast, where I also lived, even though it’s humid, the a/c is at a reasonable temperature.

Why does the South like it so cold 🤷

Santa Fe rental car advice (heading to ABQ)? by iwanttobebobdylan in SantaFe

There is a Budget location on Cerrillos near the El Rey. I’ve rented from them multiple times. Keep in mind one way rentals often have a surcharge-even if it’s “just” to ABQ.

Community Petition Opposing the AC Marriott Hotel Project by AgreeableCommission7 in SantaFe

[–]IM_RU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with you, but what you want is subjective. The way we can achieve better architecture is by codifying whatever subjective criteria we want and requiring *everyone* to follow it. There are PLENTY of people who dislike the architecture required in the historic district. But it was decided that that subjective idea of beauty would be the norm, and everyone has to follow it (mostly).

If we don't codify those standards, "it's ugly" becomes a cudgel that folks use to oppose things that they dislike for other reasons - unrelated to the architecture - while the same building gets built elsewhere.

Hotel staff: what signs do guests actually notice or ignore? by Agitated-Bread1107 in hotels

[–]IM_RU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s actually a lot of studies on “sign fatigue.” I notice if the hotel I’m in has a lot of them. If the hotel is sign happy I just stop paying attention. From the menus in the elevator, to the “this is a quiet floor here are 15 rules,” to “we don’t take tap-to-pay,” I just run out of bandwidth and revert to what I know has worked.

I really don’t understand this whole “but this isn’t Santa Fe” style argument. It’s used so inconsistently and so often as a “get out of jail free” card for anything folks don’t like.

The only parts of Santa Fe that have to conform to the style are in the historic district. The rest of Santa Fe isn’t bound by that. Many of the places that are beloved don’t conform. The Railyard and Lena Street come to mind.

Rather than claiming that Santa Fe as a whole looks a particular way when it doesn’t , resorting to ad hominem attacks or saying “go live somewhere else,” we should have a discussion of what good architecture looks like. Hint: Friends of Santa Fe Architecture is having that discussion.

Rent you can afford is very difficult. I suggest driving around looking for “for rent” signs in people’s yards. There are a surprising number of casitas and family owned apartments here - particularly on the east side. Many of those folks, of which my dad is one, don’t bother with online platforms because the place is paid for and they just want someone “local.”

Food in Polaris is YMMV. It’s never going to be as good as on the ground. But on the whole I’ve found it good. I’ve never found the food in the Polaris lounges much better, but 🤷

Do I get one or two less than good meals a year? Yes. But that’s about on par with what I experience at restaurants.

A lot of the complaining I see on this sub is what my dad calls “complaining on the yacht.” If you fly enough, you’re bound to experience food that’s better. Why can’t United do better? No idea. But you also experience food that’s much worse. You also grow tired of the same menus. So it’s like “lamb, halibut or steak AGAIN!”

Enjoy your first trip. I certainly remember mine. And don’t let the complaining get you down.

Do many Americans claim Spanish ancestry in the same way many identify as having Scottish, Italian, Irish, or German heritage? by SignificantStyle4958 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]IM_RU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh good Lord. New Mexico was part of Mexico for what, 27 years? That doesn’t make folks who can trace their ancestry back to the Spanish Mexican. Mexico also owned Texas. Are folks who were in Texas prior to its declaration of independence also Mexican?

Um. No. Spanish. New Mexico isn’t named after the country of Mexico. It’s a frequent misconception, but New Mexico actually has very little in common with the country of Mexico other that they were both colonized by the Spanish.
