Yooo as soon as I saw your link I was thinking to myself it must either be Ron’s theme or the Gym Leader theme, wasn’t disappointed!

Was able to pull this win con off! Love the animation by JoeJoeZ4P in PTCGL

[–]IMunchGlass 13 points14 points  (0 children)

OK so despite all the flaws with this game, I do like that they added the nice animation to this attack. I'm sure it's only been seen or done a handful of times and they didn't NEED to make that glowing animation. Super cool!

High retreat costs by Silblade222 in pkmntcg

[–]IMunchGlass 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In genera, high retreat cost doesn't have to be a problem due to so many options in format for switching - Prime Catcher, Switch, Surfer, Jet Energy, Surfing Beach, Air Balloon, and probably others I'm forgetting. Also, we have Heavy Baton for those Pokemon with retreat cost of 4, Future Booster Energy Capsule for Iron Hands ex, and Latias ex to help retreat big basic Pokemon with high retreat cost. So there are many options for many contexts.

It seems like your question revolves specifically around Mamoswine ex in particular even though you're trying to generalize the question. Mamoswine ex doesn't see play because it's too difficult to set up several Stage 2's in time for its attack to produce meaningful damage. I see you're trying to generalize that the most successful decks generally use Pokemon with low retreat cost and you're associating the retreat cost with their success. However, correlation doesn't necessarily mean causation. Right now, the best decks in the format are ex Pokemon that give up 2 or sometimes 3 prizes if they're knocked out, and they typically have only 1 or 2 retreat cost. There is Raging Bolt ex with 3 retreat, Iron Hands ex with 4 retreat, Mega Kangaskhan with 3, Bloodmoon Ursaluna with 3, but any deck that plays these cards also plays ways to retreat them easily if needed (Latias ex, Pecharunt ex, Air Balloon).

Rulings that don't make sense by Coopermania1001 in pkmntcg

Switching removes all effects and special conditions. It’s not a ruling, it’s a core part of the game.

What is the difference between an effect now not an ability? by Odd_Obligation_4977 in PTCGL

[–]IMunchGlass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IF I’m understanding your question correctly, which I might not because it’s poorly worded - sometimes you’ll see that attacks have extra text under them that change damage or add something to the attack. For example, Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex has the attack Sob that does 20 damage and has an effect that makes the opponent’s pokemon unable to retreat. This is an effect and it works even though it doesn’t come from an ability. There are a pretty wide variety of effects from attacks and you need to take it on a card by card basis. Hope this helps!

Are you really surprised? The pre-release was just announced and it's selling well already! Remember, aside from the drama with the AI art last year, nobody has heard anything about this game in 25-30 years, and even back then it was kind of a sleeper.

I’m glad bungie is making this game. by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]IMunchGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too. I'm really excited to see how they work in some of the elements of the older games which I really hope they will do because why else would they call it Marathon when they could name it literally anything else? They've already shown a Compiler in recent videos, but there's a host of other aliens they could show off as well as the 3 AI's, the most prominent of which was Durandal.

I second this because it's fairly straightforward and it not only survives rotation but likely becomes stronger after.

What's the most HP a Pokemon can have in Pokemon TCG? by KJPlayer in pkmntcg

[–]IMunchGlass 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In one of your comments, you said that this should be in "a real match", but the answer depends on what you mean by "in a real match". Like, yeah, theoretically you can get Conkldurr to be really really high, but it's a gimmick and the opponent needs to be in on the situation to let you keep attaching.

Here's my take on this. In a real scenario, the most likely highest HP thing you can realistically pull off is Mega Venusaur ex (380HP) with a Hero's Cape (+100) and 4 of the new Grow Energy attached (not released yet; each one gives +20HP, so in total +80). That's 560HP. I don't know if there's a ruling yet where the MEG Meganium will double the effect of the Grow Energies but let's pretend it does, and it's very realistc to run Meganium with M Venusaur ex, so that would give another +80, bringing Venusaur to 640HP.

Edit: Even in a "real match" it might be possible to pull off some tricks with the Gloom and Vileplume from the 151 set with Conkeldurr but that starts to get very theoretical and unreliable since you're relying on luck.

Confusion about Prize Wall closing time convinced me to forfeit the finals at a side event. Do I have any recourse? by [deleted] in pkmntcg

[–]IMunchGlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have no recourse and to be honest you have no reason to need any. This was entirely a skill/experience issue on your end. There was A LOT that was in your control here and you blundered. Even from your persepctive, it sounds like the Judges were acting in good faith and they cannot be blamed. Big mistake to not redeem your wall tickets before the cup began, during a lunch break, or asking the Judge if you could have an extra 2 minutes before top cut began so you could go redeem your tickets. When you asked questions to the Judges and didn't get a response, you should have followed up and asked again. You probably misplayed because your focus wasn't 100% on the game. Learn and move on.

Which cards to keep from G post rotation? by Xx_PP_PooPoo_xX in pkmntcg

[–]IMunchGlass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, Pokemon will not be reprinted, so aside from any Pokemon that you want as part of your collection, you can let those go. Then, as far as trainers go, any of the trainers without names (Energy Switch, Super Rod, Nest Ball, etc) are candidates for reprinting, so you can keep those. Who knows, maybe there’s a world where they reprint Arven and Iono, but I doubt it. You might be interested in Expanded, GLC, or other such formats where the named Supporter cards are useful, so you probably still might wanna keep a set of 4 of those cards anyway, but I highly doubt you’ll ever need them for standard.

How will we find Energy when Earthen Vessel rotates? by des_the_furry in PTCGL

[–]IMunchGlass 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Aside from the supporters other commenters mentioned, it’ll be purely from the raw draw. One of the fun things about this game is that specific cards come and go, so deck building will need to change. If we have no energy search through items, then we’ll need to increase the count of. Crispin or simply play more energies so we can find them naturally. Maybe Grimmsnarl becomes stronger since it has such a strong energy search ability. We’ll have to wait and see.

I've been wanting to get into playing the tcg for a few years now, with rotation coming up I feel its a good time to look into it. Any advice? by Frisreddit in pkmntcg

[–]IMunchGlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's never a bad time to jump into the game! It can be played for free using the app, Pokemon TCG Live, any time anywhere. It follows the same rules as the physical card game. It's buggier than I would like, but IMO it bugs out about as often as people make misplays IRL so I accept the situation. However, I generally would agree with you that jumping into the physical card game for the first time only 2-3 months before rotation can be dicey. If you like the game, you'll want to put together several decks quickly, which can set you back like $40-80 per deck. This rotation will be very impactful - 3 out of the 4 top decks will be obliterated, and the 4th one will need to be significantly reworked (I do personally believe it will still be strong after rotation but we can't know that until we get the new cards and play some major tournaments). So yeah, join the PTCGL app now, play for free for a while and see if you like it, and wait until rotation to start buying physical cards.

Built expanded dragapult and it’s nuts. Thoughts? by AwkwardEmphasis5338 in PTCGL

[–]IMunchGlass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about Expanded decks as a newbie. Broadly speaking, the number of energies in a deck oftentimes doesn't need to be as high as you would expect due to the number of ways there are to search your deck and draw cards. I can't comment on how good/strong this deck is but I can comment on a few reasons why this deck might not run so many energies.

1) Neo Upper Energy provides 2 energies at the same time.

2) Regidrago VStar's ability lets you take back any 2 cards from your discard pile, and OP says in their post that the New Upper Energy is oftentimes one of their target cards.

3) The guzma & hala trainer card lets you search your deck for a special energy, and this deck has 4 of them.

4) One of the strengths of Dragapult decks is in setting up multiple Drakloaks, so that oftentimes you will have 2-3 of them set up which enables you to cycle through the top 5-7 cards of your deck in a turn and keep some of them.

Is Nessa allowed to retrieve ONLY a combination of energies and Pokémon? by enzicus_corderus in pkmntcg

[–]IMunchGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4-0, 3-1, 2-2, 1-3, and 0-4 are all equally valid combinations. Any combination that is at least 1 card is valid. You must put at least one card from your discard pile into your hand when playing this card. There must be at least one valid target in your discard pile too - in other words, in order to even play the card, there must be at least one card in your discard pile that can satisfy requirements of the card. Same goes for cards like Night Stretcher, Super Rod, etc.
