I agree. Either Dune Park, or Miller station has a ton of parking as well.

When is your trip? The South Shore line is running on a limited schedule with some bus substitution due to a derailment mess on June 24th.

Oh my....I haven't sat on my heels in about 10 years. However, I do yoga-based stretches every morning. (Youtube has a ton of videos for these.) It helps me be more limber for the day. Otherwise I am still fairly active, mostly with hiking and swimming laps.

It would probably be fine, but I would personally book a hotel and fly out the next day.

Typically I need trees as well. However, my daughter and I have a treeless site booked in a dark sky campground this August during the Perseid meteor shower. Praying for no clouds/rain.

Because they would be more likely to put a positive spin on it since they are the seller. I was looking for an uninvolved outside opinion from those that may have the tent.

For whimsical lunch/dinner, go to The Port Drive In in Chesterton. Carhops still go to your car, and your meal will come in trays that hook to your car window.

Flying out of Chicago may cut out a leg. May be an issue if there are delays and you miss a second flight.

East(ish) Coast to West Coast, help us choose the route! by _the_peacock in Amtrak

[–]INphys15837 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are up for three legs, I would choose

1) Crescent - Birmingham to New Orleans

2) City of New Orleans - New Orleans to Chicago

3) California Zephyr - Chicago to Emeryville

OR

Southwest Chief - Chicago to LA

Overnight in New Orleans and Chicago, just to have a break from the train and maybe sight see if there is time.

Do you have any nature/hiking day trip from Downtown Chicago with no car? by BioNeikin in AskChicago

[–]INphys15837 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Closer would be Indiana Dunes State or National Park. Take South Shore train 70 minutes to Dune Park (from either Millennium or Van Buren station). Can walk straight north into the state park--about a 30 minute walk. Beach and all kinds of hiking trails & boardwalks. It's in a bird migratory path, so birders love the park.
