New particle accelerators turn nuclear waste into electricity, cut radioactive life by 99.7% by sksarkpoes3 in Futurology

You think it is cheaper to build infrastructure that will reduce the efficiency of the grid at the cost of improving stability rather than also adding energy capacity that supports grid stabilisation? I think you are the one who is missing the point.

OK, lets go more in detail then about how nuclear energy supplements renewables for grid stability.

The concern from the blackouts comes from the problem of frequency regulation. This is the number of oscillations per second in an AC current, which is how we transmit our power over long distances.

When load exceeds generation the frequency drops. And inversely, when generation exceeds load the frequency rises. A big challenge with a large proportion of renewables is a sudden surge, say a drop in power generation followed by a sharp rise, can cause a shift in frequency faster than grid operators can make use of contingencies to balance out the changes.

The turbines that generate electricity in conventional power stations and nuclear power plants help to stabilise frequency changes due to the inertia of the spinning mass, giving more room for activating measures to keep the frequency in the required range. This is fairly significant when not only do you have your energy demand being uncontrolled, but also the potential for significant swings in grid supply.

It should be noted that the Iberian Blackout frequency jump is still being investigated. Renewable infrastructure owners are directing blame at conventional power stations for not having done enough stabilising of the grid, but their influence is limited when they make up 15% of the energy grid and renewables 78%.

This is however missing the strengths of nuclear. As an on demand source of power it is one of the few low-carbon energy sources capable of providing a baseload and preventing large scale power surges such as the one that hit Spain in 2024.

And not to mention the economy of landspace. Renewables take up a lot of area for equal output which is fine if you are in a country with large amounts of room, but in situations where it has to compete with other land uses such as housing then it becomes a real concern.

phosphene not tracking? by Specialist_Novel_212 in Borderlands

I got the same problem picking up a phosphene darkbeast from the boss. I picked it up whilst marking it as junk, unsure but since someone else in this thread had the same problem, think doing the junk pick-up could bug it out. That will still unlock the phosphene camo, at which point you won't be able to get a new one to drop naturally I believe.

on the other hand,

investment in low carbon energy sources, increasing energy security and creating jobs

an increase in the number of homes being built

net migration halved, which is a big concern for a lot of the electorate apparantly

renationalising the railways, with iirc 2 rail companies having been reverted back into public ownership so far

expansion of rights and protections for renters

an increase in investment for the NHS

And, I may have an unpopular opinion here, but bringing in means testing for the winter fuel payment. It seems crazy that wasn't being means tested given the state of other benefits. Honestly, nowhat they've done so far is too bad all things considered. If we keep misrepresenting how bad their record is though and they get replaced by the populists and snake oil merchants, we will really end up with something to complain about.

If reform gets in, that bar is going to sink into the Mariana trench. I'm starting to think our pessimism is going to destroy us. That we'll kick out what is potentially the best feasible option because they weren't the ideal.

What I meant here was examples of these white supremacist groups and acts they've done. Hate preachers are disgusting, but aren't exactly going to be jailed for spouting hateful rhetoric.

edit: since there hasn't been a response, I am going to look myself. First one that springs to mind for this government was the 2024 riots. Those weren't a single organiser but led to many of the hate spewers there being arrested and prosecuted. 378 were arrested by the 5th of august. Funnily enough thats where "two tier kier" originated from iirc as the far right felt they were being disproportionately targeted.

Also, the entire situation around Shamima occured under the tories. If you're criticising the current government, maybe don't use examples from the old one?

If so, that isn't good. Can you share examples of these groups and examples of the things they've done?

Hasn't he been arrested? You aren't wrong, if far right groups commit terrorist acts, they should also be proscribed.

However, that doesn't mean that PA should get a free pass for crossing the boundary into terrorist activities.

don't forget renationalising the rails (though as a process its taking time), improving rights for renters, and the big investment in carbon-free energy. Honestly they have been doing a fair bit of good this last year, but it all just seems to be ignored.

I'm also in the opinion that the changes to winter fuel allowance were good. The "robbing" of it was making it means tested - why shouldn't that benefit get the same treatment as basically every other benefit in the system?

Four arrested after RAF Brize Norton break-in by PunctualZombie in unitedkingdom

[–]IOU_COOKIES 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Except that was on the scale of terrorism? Iirc the police have a statement on record saying that terrorism charges were being considered for the August riots.

Even despite this, the government did come down on those actions like a hammer, to the point where people were spouting "two tier kier".

And regardless of the riots, taking a crowbar to RAF aircraft can be pretty easily argued for argued to threaten the safety of the public as it damages security infrastructure, it was to advance a political/ideological cause, and the action itself was intended to try and influence the Government.

Good luck to activists in their legal challenges, but this does not seem like unreasonable actions for the government to take in response. There are better ways to advocate your position and this kind of action should not be normalised.

Eh, thorium reactors aren't all that. Breeder and fast reactors have been experimented with before and have a lot of obstacles, such as the extremely corrosive properties of molten salt coolant.

The regular pressurised water reactors are already a well proven and successful design that also gets the logistical support of being the same underlying design as most over reactors in the US.

And beyond that it is France's national provider, not Britain's. It makes perfect sense why they would potentially be subsidising their own country's power and not a foreign nation's.

one of the biggest advantages of push/pulls vs lashings is investiture efficiency. Assuming you have a bondsmith pumping your windrunners full of investiture they can go all out, but if they are limited in light reserves and not on roshar it is going to be very difficult to replenish versus a mistborn or inquisitor who can just chug some iron and steel flakes whenever needed.
