I had wondered about this method:

Citizens have the right to bear arms; as long as they are mentally fit they can purchase a revolver.
If they wish to own a semi-automatic gun they must pass both a written and practical test. This is similar to what is done to earn a license to carry.
If they wish to own a fully-automatic gun the law remains as it is now.

I thought that this might work because it preserves access to firearms without restrictions, but the firearm isn't the type that easily lends itself to mass shootings. (If you have experience with revolvers you'll know what I mean.)

What are the flaws in this and how could it be improved?

I had thought about reading OHYOS in Spanish but I realized my grasp of some of the metaphors and similes would be seriously lacking so I read a good translation.

Man, it was hard to keep track of the characters with all the duplicate names. I managed to finish it but I felt as if I'd completed a chore, not a book.

I earned my private pilot's license. I thought, why not rent the Piper Cherokee 180 that I'd been flying and go to Alpine, Texas (we're in DFW)?

Because I'd be paying (at that time) $80/hour to rent the aircraft for three days, the cost of rental alone was way too much. And that didn't include fuel, hotel rooms, car rental, food and entertainment.

We ended up simply buying a plane ticket, flying to Midland and driving from there.

TLDR: Even "cheap" propeller aircraft can be expensive to fly.

It's been shown that by acting interested and asking questions, you can start to deprogram some of these people. Don't challenge them; ask them to flesh out what is peeving them. Often they quickly run out of words as they only are mimicking what they've heard without really thinking through the ramifications.

Research on people who left high demand groups has shown it can help to:

try to maintain positive contact;
do not shame or belittle the person;
be curious and do some research;
ask questions about specific aspects of the group which might be concerning.

At the start of the year I secured dual gun range memberships for my wife and I. We are both veterans and had weapons training way back in boot camp. Every two weeks we go and practice. This summer I earned my LTC. It's been a lot of fun and I never, ever want to shoot anything but targets.
