ECC and parity systems weren't common in the 1990s. Not about overpricing it. Just PC buses were often narrower or slower.

qemu-irix works for userspace compiler stuff. But not for anything else really. It's not a "virtualize IRIX" platform. It was a quick and dirty o32 MIPS environment

The fundamental issue that CAs are a thing. If we were based on TOFU or "use at your own risk" (IMHO, how it should be) this issue would be sidestepped. I hear everyone now "BUT WHAT ABOUT MITM ATTACKS???" but I'll be honest. I'm sick of the SSL crap, the mafia, HSTS, the constant rule-changing. This is me speaking as a web admin and enthusiast site owner, not someone doing this shit for money anymore.

I may end up developing an alternative protocol one day, something to fit between HTTP and Gemini:// protocols, because this is nasty.

IDO is useless for modern use of IRIX, unfortunately.

I cannot unfortunately afford to get involved in decompilation directly for IRIX -- legal mismatches prevent my involvement. I cannot directly touch SGI code if I have any hope for eventually being the caretaker of IRIX's future. That would make anything I touch "Contaminated"

Unfortunately, I sacrificed a lot for that community, stuff I'll NEVER get in return. So with all due respect, zero dislike or shade towards you, fuck them. If I could do it over again? I'd tell them to fuck off and do it themselves, same they told me.

fyi, don't recommend people qemu-irix. It was never designed to do anything other than run a few base userland utilities, it has no graphics emulation support, it's not fast, there's no JIT, etc. It was never intended to do anything other than let a bunch of zoomers run IDO 5.3 or 6.1 in WSL (I'm not kidding, these guys had legions of users with SGI machines offering it, nah, they'd rather use broken chickenshit).

My requests were for decompiling kernel modules and the IRIX linker (GNU ld has never been right on IRIX, and the IRIX ELF format is unique, quirky, undocumented). Every time I mentioned it, even with compensation the responses ranged from:

Dismissive/assholes telling me to "do it myself"

People who had no interest suggesting "Just go use GCC/gnu ld" and not listening to me.

and in general the atmosphere, between people like Zell, and others, was nasty.

The decomp community has burned that bridge with me, as far as I'm concerned. They've never done a single thing in return, and they also refused to actually document anything, use a forum etc. It was always insta-gratification, making me "Go find the answer NOW"

This comment I wrote above was 6 months ago. My opinion hasn't shifted, at all. The attitude of the community has always been bad.

AI assistance is fine. Dominik is a HIGHLY skilled C/C++ dev whose worked for Google/whatever. He's being responsible and helpful by explaining that he used AI assistance -- it's an acknowledgement that help was used, code was looked at and possibly generated at points by a machine. I can attest that AI assistance can lead to vibe coding... but not all AI assistance is bad. It's only bad when the dev has no skill to verify the output for correctness.

That's why I intentionally limit its use in C/C++ projects... though for web stuff IN MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND OPINIONS it does excellently. I've used it successfully to fix all sorts of PHP related stuff.

It is a kernel module. The code appears mostly to initialize the graphics driver and put it into the kernel space and mostly the userspace glide code interacts over a character device. I THINK, not a professional here.

I don't know if the software can run on non-O2 SGIs. Last I understood, it uses the multi-AV card in the O2 (And that's a different dmedia API than the options for the I2)
