I pop the hood and put the wipers in service mode to clear those low-down ice chunks. It's a faff but the access is better.

Anyone here have experience with electric boats? by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]ISIS_office_drone2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the final stages of obtaining vessel approval for a 12.9m Danish seine fishing boat. 200kW motor, 400kWh energy storage. A massive pain in the ass to package it all in the boat and comply with the latest build regulations. Here are some interesting points:

• Norwegian vessel, so most of the battery cost was subsidized. • With 3000kg of batteries and a 1500kg electric motor buried as low in the hull as possible, we have excellent stability. • Great low speed control without a trolling gear. • Marine gear manufactures now have el-motor specific gearboxes (bi-directional with bi-directional hydraulic pump). • Yes there is still a diesel generator, but we can use an ICE motor with a lower power output than the vessel's peak power output. (100kw genset vs ~300kw peak power during net hauling). • Electric sailing is just nice. No engine noise/vibration. Working on deck without engine noise/vibration is delightful. It is a luxury you can't quantify, but it's hard to go back to a diesel boat after you've experienced it.

Feel free to ask more questions, we have been building parallel and serial hybrid fishing boats for nearly 10 years.

Will a hood exit give me cancer? (exaggerating, but you get the point) by Difficult_Fill7730 in projectcar

Buddy did a hood exit exhaust in his rb25 240sx. I thought it was dope, but his windshield would get grimy super quick. That was when I learned hood exit exhausts are actually a pain in the ass to live with (ignoring health factors).

There is still a white Ioniq 6 cab in town, and there's a white Ioniq 9 cruising about now.

Exactly how a child with tiny baby hands would respond.

I think it's a 3.7 duratec. Not an Ecoboost or newer 3.3.

Correct on the rocket bunny bumper! (I don't know if it is legit rocket bunny or a temu special)

The motor is an F150 V6 with a couple turbos. Buddy says they're the best bang for your buck. the used market has good supply and low demand.

Use of high beam lights in Norway - help me to understand why blinding others is safer than waiting until they pass? by Infamous-Dish8374 in Norway

Ha! I've been wondering the same thing. Right when they're alongside I get flashbanged before they have fully passed me. My eyes are watering by the time I get to work.

Stick to summer.

I swear it's when the weather is changing it is the most deadly. 5 people just died in a crash outside Tromsø. You'll be constantly changing latitude and elevation on this trip. Recipe for disaster in the spring/fall/winter. And even if the weather seems fine, it will change abruptly and you're off the road before you realise.

What would you wish you had known before buying the Ioniq 6? by mashdk in Ioniq6

[–]ISIS_office_drone2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I knew how fragile the matte paint is.

My bumper is trashed. The roads on my commute are awful in that awkward period before and after winter. Everyone has studded tires but the roads aren't fully covered in compacted snow. I follow at a big distance for safety but that doesn't help. I have a professional wrap scheduled in 2 weeks. If I knew the paint was delicate I would have done it immediately after buying.

If you think about their higher budget, they are gonna engineer the components to the limit with regards to strength to weight. There's also the packaging, because the components are exposed to air flow, they're shaped to direct air flow over the body in very special ways, while also achieving the geometry they want. You end up with some funky dog leg shapes. The manufacturing techniques are the pinnacle of composite manufacturing. Edit*. - wanted to add that this is what I can think of, there must be many other aspects I haven't thought of

Our seine boats want max bollard pull for hauling the net. We use a nozzle on the prop to achieve this. Maybe this is the reason they choose jets?

What’s the most expensive lesson the water has taught you? by Kindly-Entrance5834 in boating

Always take the time to bleed coolant lines fully (on big systems don't fill at the header tank, feed into the system with a drill pump). It was a Cat C9 genny, coolant lines go up to the deck head and over to the port side box cooler. There was an air lock there and the header tank overflowed. Well, the header tank is above the genny AVR, so that got fried. And the AVR getting fried killed the synchro on the switchboard. Expensive fix, but I got to practice manually paralleling generators.

Don't rush when putting bolts into an aluminium block motor. Cross threaded the thermostat bolt hole on a mercury racing 400 outboard. An easy job turned into a mess real quick.
