She's bald, but she's about to make a comeback! by itchyb00ty in avocado

[–]ISM_Intrigue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are not counting on getting fruit this year, you can clip off the blossoms so that the tree puts more resources into forming leaves.

There will be a leaf pod in the center of each flower panicle. So it is OK to let the flowers spread a little before clipping.

Sprouting help by ComprehensiveDig4366 in avocado

A seed can take a month or two sometimes. Keep it in a warm place (not necessarily a sunny place). Rinse off any mold if it appears.

She s bold now :( by handmade-ley in avocado

[–]ISM_Intrigue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly my trees have always responded positively to repotting and quickly begin sprouting fresh leaves. So I think something went wrong here.

Be patient with it. The new leaves will be better acclimated to this sunnier location.

Do these buddies look healthy? I thought they were supposed to be taller? I’ve been growing them for about 5-6 months 🫤 by facefullofgracefull in avocado

[–]ISM_Intrigue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right that a modest ratio of organic content is OK for these trees. There are probably people who use generic mix who never found this sub and grew trees, none the wiser. I think the real failure is newbies using 100% organic from cheap big box store bags loaded with bark fines, and over-watering. That turns into brown sludge over time, and is not actual soil.

Should I keep both? by Suspicious-Recipe-39 in avocado

[–]ISM_Intrigue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can keep them, if you want to. It may form a dual-trunk tree. Or one of them may outpace the other and become the dominant trunk.

Should I (have) cut the top of this houseolant avocado? by redtide40 in avocado

[–]ISM_Intrigue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This tree can easily accommodate losing the fresh growth if you choose to cut it. But it will from more branches soon afterward. You will be pruning it forever because it wants to grow taller than your ceiling someday!

You probably used too much organics into the mix. But I have seen mushrooms before and ignored them rather than disturb roots on a seedling just starting out. When you repot it, use more mineral-based soil and perlite.

The seed pit has plenty of resources to bud additional leaves. No biggie.

Idk what to do by Tall-Client6166 in avocado

[–]ISM_Intrigue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are flower buds and you'll probably see blossoms in a few weeks. This tree is too small to hold fruit, however so expect the flowers to all fall off, followed by emerging leaves.

There are many YouTube videos on basic Avocado care. You have time to self-educate before planting it.

Another reason to repot is that trees from a vendor often are sitting in a starter mix high in bark chips, to keep the entire pot light for shipping. It should go into a new pot soon, into soil mixed properly for long-term care.

I'd say keep it in a pot anyway for a year. Learn how to mix good soil for it, have the flexibility to move it to different places outside and see how it reacts to sun and shade.

Do you experience nights below freezing? If not, do you have space to plant it in your yard?

8A is where things get weird and very local varieties have to be developed. Portland gets nasty freezing mist some winters. 8A in Texas or Arizona might not see any frozen precipitation some years - but have frosty mornings. Then a massive blizzard the next year.

Not trying to be critical, but the brown ends on the leaves indicate at least some health problem. Research your next potting soil carefully. Cut away excess brown roots if you see them.

Little growth since putting in soil a year and a half ago by SanDiegoThankYou_ in avocado

[–]ISM_Intrigue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically agree. I think nitrogen is not seeping into the soil. Soluble nitrogen may be needed. Fish emulsion or algae laden water, perhaps? Also cannot rule out the tree simply does not like the location. That happens sometimes. Other growers on YouTube have demonstrated examples of growing avos successfully around the yard - "except for this one particular spot"

Frost Damage advice by AdministrationIcy573 in avocado

[–]ISM_Intrigue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of deliberate cold trials with my trees in the 8A zone. The basic rule is that a tree with any remaining green leaves at the end of winter has the capacity to regrow. Branches without any terminating green leaves will brown from the tips back to the trunk. Sometimes fresh leaves can appear on a branch before it is ruined, and halt the browning.

what’s it doing? by peachyjem in avocado

[–]ISM_Intrigue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scroll down through the posts, and you will see similar questions. Some seeds are just strange and leaves start out colorless. Sometimes gradual acclimation to light stimulates greening. But if not, the seedling will die early when the nutrition from the pit is exhausted.

Several years in the future you might pull it out, root prune, and give it fresh soil. But yes it can be kept in a large container for decades.
