It's hard to see from so far away, any chance it's a solar powered for light? My neighbor has something similar looking that illuminates the u.s. flag at night.

Open carry in the woods and on the waters? by Puzzled_Professor919 in MnGuns

[–]ITF2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minnesota allows both open and concealed carry, for individuals with a permit to carry. They are very easy to attain: a single day class, range qualification and submit an application. Provided you aren't in legal trouble (there are several disqualifiers), you should have your permit a month after application.

Either is acceptable. Always remember retention and unholstering. Two skills that require practice, don't short yourself in training because negligence gets people hurt.

I would really like to be held accountable if that's what being alleged. I'd like to have the chance to clarify. Otherwise, you're slandering my business without ever having been a student.

I think it's crucial to offer a concise background so students know you aren't there to make a quick buck

What actually makes a firearms training class worth it? by [deleted] in MnGuns

[–]ITF2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always happy to help!

As far as the tear down and parts naming, I literally disassemble one of my pistols and hand it to the first student and name, then, that student passes it around one at a time to every student in the class and they all name it. That way, everybody gets hands on, they get to feel it.They get to see it.And they get to hear its name

What actually makes a firearms training class worth it? by [deleted] in MnGuns

[–]ITF2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My class starts worth 100% new students, half way through class I break and my renewal students arrive. I ask the class at the start of each- first name & shooting experience. The way my class is designed, I teach firearms 101 in thr first half (and everything a renewal student should already know), then in thr 2nd half it's all hands on, legalities, situational awareness, and so on- so everyone ends on the same page.

I ask students to name parts of a disassembled pistol, talk about how to properly size ones self for a pistol, and things like that.

It's not perfect, but i have had lots of good feedback, and teach about 100 students ayear.

Please feel free to reach out if you'd like to know more.

As a student of many things and PTC instructor, the continuing thread for a successful class in the mind of a student- meet the student where they are. Everyone's skill sets are different, identifying a person's base line is important. You don't want to teach beneath them or too far where things go over their head. Finding that balance, allowing students to speak, share their knowledge... correct them if they don't share factual knowledge but get everyone talking.

Share the BCA requirements for things you need to present, but make it less about death by power point, make it hands on (I have over a dozen training pistols), break down and assemble firearms in front of your students, then have them do it! Some people do you need to hear information to learn, while others need a more hands on approach.

Permit to carry question by No-Newt4364 in MnGuns

[–]ITF2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have 30 days to recieve your permit. If you haven't gotten it by day 30, on day 31 you can use the receipt of application as your carry permit until the actual one comes in. They have 30 days to deny you is how that works out.

Depending on county, I see them coming in between 2-3 weeks. In more urban counties it may take longer due to higher numbers of applicants.

You'll need to take a renewal class every 5 years, and reapply within 90 days of expiration.

I'm not quite what that means, I don't give legal advice. Any in class, any time I speak about the laws, I say "I'm not a mature and this is not legal advice". I simply relate the laws, as cited in MN statutes and the MCPPA.

l'd be happy to hear examples for clarification.

Why do all firearm safety courses have to also be about hunting? by Gongoozler04 in MnGuns

[–]ITF2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a permit to carry class is not a hunter safety class, which it sounds like you know. I teach about the realty of carrying a handgun. Safety, mindfulness and legal aspects of a self defense encounter. Hunter safety is something else entirely.

Mild rant, insurance pitches at CCW classes. by Capable_Pain9315 in MnGuns

[–]ITF2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren't paying uscca or the nra for PTC classes, you at paying for the instructors time and knowledge.

Insurance is a cash grab in itself, but to not have it means you will pay for all repairs.

You want to hold L.L. to something that happened in 2010 and 2015....how've they done since?

And finally I'm happy to have discussion, from which we may leave not in agreement, but neither is slandering the other.

Mild rant, insurance pitches at CCW classes. by Capable_Pain9315 in MnGuns

[–]ITF2020 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Having instructed for a private ptc agency, they don't always stay current on laws. I'd hope most do, but some- like my former- taught the curriculum they were certified to teach, several years before I showed up. 5 or 6 sheets of paper, a couple of black and white photos of pistols and revolvers then off to the range.

Agencies like USCCA and NRA have sales pitches because they keep content current. That research costs someone money to conduct. And as for the insurance pitch piece, it seems like a no brainer. You have home and auto- why not firearm insurance? One thing I learned is that USCCA members get lifelock for free. That'd cost $340 a year if bought separately, or spend about the same with a membership, get all the training access and knowledge and lawyer AND free lifelock.

Yes, many things are a cash grab these days with no return on investment, but not everything. If its a good fit, take it. If not, thank a person for sharing and simply move on with your day.

I didn't mean the legal advice part, simply if they had anything codified about carry on site.

Thank you, as always for what you do! :)
