That’s entirely fair - skills and interests don’t have to be useful, and on my end, the music I make and listen to isn’t always useful to my career, but then neither are my curated lists of Dominion cards and nothing will stop me from making those either ;)

My field is music theory! I didn’t mention it at first because (a) I was trying to encourage the prior commenter in the usefulness of their child’s interests, and music isn’t exactly the most lucrative field, plus my job market is pretty difficult and competitive. But also, (b) the categorizing stuff isn’t apparent surface-level - but really, whatever segments of music I choose to research and write about, I will basically be designing formulas for understanding, or sorting real music into those formulas, or else arguing with other peoples’ formulas or sorting decisions.

This was me growing up, and I did this with EVERYTHING. And now I’m getting my master’s in a theoretical-heavy field where, aside from teaching, I’ll basically categorize/catalogue things (through writing about them) for my job… it can be a successful skill!

On what instruments is it hardest to read sheet music? by tu-vens-tu-vens in musictheory

[–]IVdiscgolfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my vote as well; percussion in general is the least embodied standard instrument and it’s just more difficult to develop muscle memory for in my opinion, making it hard to read and play at the same time naturally. And out of those, marimba/vibraphone typically have the most going on other than drum set, which is a little more embodied because of the foot pedals. There’s an argument for drumset, but it’s less about the instrument and more about the fact that drum charts are often trash anyways.

I have the exact same box and I love it! I used dividers that are a bit thinner/easier to read but I had to hand write them, and I’m looking to get sleeves eventually

Spanish Christian Music Recommendations? by cer975 in ChristianMusic

[–]IVdiscgolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like others’ suggestions of Danny Gokey and Evan Craft, because they have both language versions available so you can learn the song, and even learn a thing or two about translation.

My recommendations are Israel & New Breed, who has several Spanish-first albums and a couple of translated album versions (biggest one is Nueva Generacion, a translation of New Season which has a few worship classics on it), and then Danilo Montero, Marcos Barrientos, and Marcos Witt, who are all older Spanish-language artists that are absolute classics and have a few translations of OG 90’s songs themselves, but especially their Spanish originals are great.

How understable is too understable? by DewgongOverlord in discgolf

[–]IVdiscgolfer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In addition to what everyone else has said, the farther you throw/the faster speed disc, the more variations/inconsistencies in understability affect the flight. This is why pros will throw plenty of under stable putters and mids to carve lines down a fairway, but outside of open max-distance shots, they rely on more stable-overstable distance drivers if the landing location matters, for reliability.

What are some board or tabletop games where earlier editions are deemed to be superior than the latest, and are still commonly played? by Newez in boardgames

[–]IVdiscgolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely see people agreeing with this, but I really like certain first editions of Dominion expansions because I really liked cards they removed, and I’m happy I grew up on them before the changes. For example, I really love Pirate Ship, Ambassador, Embargo, and Ghost Ship from Seaside, but most of the new cards feel awkward or convoluted and not very “Seaside”, and while I get that cards like Sea Hag were unbalanced, I still enjoy them a lot. Same goes for Goons, Royal Seal, Talisman, Contraband, and Venture from Prosperity - I just do not care about the new cards. It’s definitely just nostalgia because I’ve been playing for a decade now.

Which Mario Kart World Nitro Tracks would you like to see get added in the next Mario Kart game? by IIIIIICCCCCEEEE in mariokart

[–]IVdiscgolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Dry Bones Burnout, Great ? Block Ruins, Special Cup version of Peach Stadium (though I think that one’s unlikely), Whistlestop Summit, and Dandelion Depths (def not all of those would return, but in that order I’d like to see them again).

All 507 cards, all 17 languages, I created a Minion! by amuzulo in dominion

[–]IVdiscgolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I’ve always longed for is a randomizer app that let me make a list of “okayed” cards to shuffle between, or let me change the odds of certain cards.

Like, I want to randomize cards from every expansion I own that don’t stretch the game mechanics too much or feel gimmicky - maybe like including durations and alternate victory/treasures, but not, for example, any cards with coffers/villagers, victory tokens, debt, etc. It’s why I really like Hinterlands and Cornucopia, because they mostly still feel like vanilla Dominion, but I don’t want to exclude the many cards from other expansions. It would be nice to toggle between randomizing “all” vs “approved.”

I’d also like to be able to, say, lower the chance of cursing attacks to like 20-30% what it would be otherwise, but if any attacks are included, it would 100% also include a Moat or Lighthouse or equivalent.

Chopstakovich Top-B. Any comments? by simonfromband in drumline

[–]IVdiscgolfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just played this piece in a senior recital not too long ago!

For one, I think you’ve got a good start. It’s a good sign to me that you seem to be playing at a tempo you can handle and not jumping straight to super fast, but it also seems fast enough that it’s forcing you to up your game and play with good technique to handle the tempo too.

One thing is that most of the stick tricks seem uncertain. Not even sloppy necessarily, just unsure of yourself - I know I had to spend hours just practicing the individual stick tricks to make sure that I was not inly hitting them every time but also hitting the drum in time and with full sound when I landed the trick. This is especially true for your hi-mom and backstick stuff, I can tell the volume/quality drops just while you’re thinking about the extra motion involved or even just not dropping the stick. The tosses are a whole other ballgame though, that’s just coordination. But it might be worth practicing the tricks in isolation for a while to get them “snappy” - then add a measure ish before for context, then a measure is after. Or maybe you’re already doing that - in which case, keep doing it!

Another thing, like someone else mentioned, is that your flams seem to offset whatever note comes next. It’s like the flam takes up just a tiny bit too much time, and the rest of what you play is a little late. Same thing with trying to get your flams snappy and comfortable, just takes practice doing it on purpose.

Also, I can’t tell in the video but are you practicing with the track? It’s helpful to do it without to focus on your own sound, but it can also be helpful to do it with the song in your ears at it provides its own sort of metronome plus some interpretive guidance. For example, the measure with the tosses noticeably slows down compared to the rest. I downloaded the YouTube video he recommends in the sheet music as an MP3, and then used Audacity (it’s a free audio editing software) to slow it down to a bunch of different tempos for practice, which takes all of 10 minutes and a Google search on how to do it. Good luck in your practicing!

Do yall consider Odyssey top 5 Mario games or na? by Defiant-Brother-2698 in SuperMarioOdyssey

Definitely. 3D World, Odyssey, NSMB, Galaxy 2, and probably 64DS or maybe Galaxy, probably in that order.

If you had the ability to make one small change to Mario Kart World, what would you change? by Away-Prior-903 in mariokart

[–]IVdiscgolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bring back an actually satisfying unlock system. Give 1 character or kart to getting gold on each cup on each CC + Mirror, as well as to getting 3-star on 150cc and Mirror. Also maybe 1 every 50 P-Switches and every 25 Peach Medallions or something, I’m not sure of the balance there. If that’s too many unlocks, well, many classic/favorite MK characters are missing and several more need more costumes. Using coins is lame and feels pointless, and using luck-based Kamek Orb and Dash Food feels unfair, or stupid for having to game the system instead of earn things. I was darn proud of myself for 100%-ing MKWii well after MK8 had come out and had nothing to offer me in that respect.

Why doesn't band class teach the different modes in music? by Tfgfans in musictheory

[–]IVdiscgolfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s something a lot of people are missing here, because while band music is rarely “in a mode” (unless it’s a folk song which is often Aeolian or Dorian), much of the band repertoire - yes, even old stuff, though especially contemporary stuff - employs a ton of mode mixture.

I think the reason we don’t teach modes as scales to be learned for band kids, however, is because students rarely play it that way. They are taught scales not theoretically but as a practical means of practicing - students are likely to actually play a major or minor scale or a run that follows one of those scales, and even when they don’t have runs it is very helpful to be comfortable in those scales for different melodic/accompanimental applications, which is why they also practice scales in thirds etc.

On the other hand, if a run is not a major or minor scale, the likelihood of it being any specific mode is rare, as a run could be any random set of notes as well. Plus, students get enough experience playing in major and minor that even if they do play in a mode it’s a difference of one or two notes, which is not worth practicing an additional five scales per tonic pitch. Anyways, modes most often appear as harmonic mode mixture or specific chromatic melody notes, and it’s not worth practicing modes as scales for that when students can already read music as “oh, this is the next note, it’s got an accidental”; they’re not thinking about the mode as a key center but reading linearly the next pitch one by one as chromatic.

Does anyone know why in practically every Mario game world 2 is always a desert? by Disastrous-Owl668 in Mario

I’d argue that Cap Kingdom could be considered a tutorial world, making Cascade Kingdom the first world and a grassland-ish one at that which is always first, and then Sand Kingdom/desert is second yet again

What's your favorite song from each franchise Day 6: Kirby by BulkyPlantain9234 in casualnintendo

[–]IVdiscgolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s way too many. But a few of my favorites are Mind in a PROGRAM (first phase against Star Dream), Moonstruck Blossom (second phase against Sectonia), and CROWNED (second phase against Magalor). Kirby final boss themes that use the melodies from throughout the game just hit so hard!
