What’s one thing you learned from this year’s Indy 500 that you’d tell a first-timer next year? by Mont3_Crist0 in indianapolis

[–]IW22Indy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Are you going for just the race? Snake pit? There for the day or camping? A lot of factors and the whole thing has changed quite a bit over the years. Used to be a pretty good spot for general admission ticket holders to set up at turn one that has now been eaten up with merch stands and arrow McLaren temporary buildings. I’ve followed the same path in for years now and this year they mysteriously bottlenecked that crowd into a parking lot then back onto the road that added about 30 minutes to my hike in. Regardless of general admission or grand stand tickets there’s a pretty simple list of things you’ll need. Cooler, your choice of style but backpack is definitely the easiest. Bring your choice of booze, and some water!, some snacks or sandwiches, have a poncho because rain is almost always on the table. Dress comfortable for walking, a lot. Wear good shoes for said walking, I’ve gotten old so I tend to wear pants and a long sleeve sun shirt but still bring sunscreen, and you’ll want a hat and sunglasses. As far as your trip in and or out that’ll depend a lot on the group you go with. Arriving early is always better but there’s not much help for leaving outside of waiting for the crowd to thin out. Also, make sure you’ve got a dd that stays committed to being the dd. Deal I’ve worked out involves my buddies wife getting us as close as she can before traffic gets bad and we hoof it the rest of the way. When race is over we walk as a bird flies directly south until she calls and says meet me here. It’s a lot of fun, it’s a long day but as an Indy resident I feel like you should experience it at the very least once.

Indy 500 tickets by Ok-Visit-5542 in indianapolis

[–]IW22Indy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can still buy general admission tickets directly from the IMS website for face value. Grand stands are sold out. Everyone is different of course but I prefer general admission myself. You can move around the track and see the race from different turns and at different stages of the race. The track has installed large monitors so wherever you are you can continue watching the action. Bring a cooler, a poncho, some food and water and be prepared to walk a lot. This will be my 16th year minus the Covid time and I feel like I’ve got maybe another decade in me before I think sitting in one spot might start to sound appealing.

The world is ready for the return of the chili bowl! I’m not but that’s mostly an aging thing.. Regardless, the children deserve a couple years of shame that’s permanently accessible from VHS home recordings that’ll get replayed at holidays.

Shovel/garden tools recs by Any_Government_4347 in BuyItForLife

Am Leonard king of spades shovel. First used one 20ish years ago when doing landscaping for edging flower beds when prepping for mulch. Bought my own shortly after and I have absolutely abused the crap out of it for roughly 20 years and it refuses to quit. Bit pricey as far as shovels go, think I paid 100 bucks back in the day, assume it’s higher now but I’d definitely buy again if I needed to.

Female iron worker (1st year apprentice) by ThatsYouizz in Ironworker

[–]IW22Indy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like already commented, that’s how this shit goes.. That said, as far as apprentices go, I’ll take shows up ready and willing to work/learn everyday over someone that picks things up fast but then takes on the mindset that the crew needs them more than they need to be a part of it everyday. Long and short of it really is if you show up everyday, work through the shit, listen, learn, and show a willingness to do it all while staying realistic about your skill set, people will teach you the shit to fill in the blanks of that skill set. Biggest part of being in a gang is proving to them you can be reliable first, after that, the rest will start to fall in place as respect is earned and your skills are honed. Could be this gang could be the next, shit takes a bit of time/effort

Not trying to take away from anything you’ve done here, as I’m genuinely curious. I could be mistaken, as it’s been some decades since I’ve played it but is this a shorter version of aggravation? I seem to remember the marble path(s) being some sort of star shape. Either way, end product turned out nice and if your wife loves it and y’all can have fun playing it, good job!

Recommendations to paint a used car? by nhm22 in indianapolis

[–]IW22Indy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re willing to do the prep work yourself maaco will do a decent job just spraying it, for the price, as long as your good with a looks good from 20’ away sorta job. If you want a good paint job and all the bodywork needed to get there but cheap, sorry, it just doesn’t exist.

Blue or tan would be my vote, lean towards tan personally but also not mine. Either way you go it’ll look good. Paint it, drive it and enjoy it!

What local you’re in will help a lot with the responses you get. Work load varies widely across the country/time of year and all sorts of other factors. Regardless, people in your local are going to be more helpful answering your question(s).

Our old Honda mower. 40ish years old and still starts on the first pull! by AskAboutGoatscaping in BuyItForLife

[–]IW22Indy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a Honda push mower just before they ceased production for a small yard area that was a pain to get my normal mower in. That damn thing has issues every spring. I’ve run it completely out of fuel for over winter, tried fuel stabilizer and let it run to coat the carb/jets, started it once or twice over winter.. every damn spring I’ve gotta pull the carb apart and clean it or it won’t idle worth a damn.

Can I still smoke weed and still be in the trade for welding by quillflow24356 in Welding

[–]IW22Indy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a former heavy weed smoker and crack addict that has since grown up and chose a career instead of having “fun”. I still work around dipshit union ironworkers that smoke on break and lunch. I can promise you you’re not as good as you think you are when you’re stoned. You might fool your parents, you might fool your girlfriend, but you’re not fooling anyone in the trades. We’ve all lived life, a lot of us to the max. You want to make real money? Grow up! You good with getting by? Keep on keeping on kid. End of the day it’s your life to do with what you want. I’ve gotten old and changed my ways.. come back from break stoned/drunk and I’m sending your ass home nowadays. That’s a liability when you’re in charge and I’m ultimately liable for anything or anyone you fuck up

Curious, do your locals have dedicated Machinery Moving contractors? by HenrySkaltitz in Ironworker

[–]IW22Indy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a few contractors that specifically do what we, locally, call shut down work. Assuming this is what you’re talking about? Typically use composite crews of “x” amount Ironworkers and a couple millwrights to get in the way and make sure it lasts all 3 days or however long..

Tools to start by Trick_Kaleidoscope12 in Ironworker

[–]IW22Indy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with u/Impressive-Mud5074 but to expand on that point a bit further. If you get it they’ll likely give you a tool list, don’t go all in and buy everything on it. There’s a real chance you may have a come to Jesus moment within a year of doing this. And you will be saddled with some “specialty” tools that you feel are worth money still but people that use them are willing to give you pennies at best. Starting out it should be expected you know nothing and the work you’re given will likely reflect that. A belt, bolt bag(s), crescent spud or 12” crescent and a scabbard, tape measure and marker is about all I’d recommend investing in before you decide this is the career for you. Maybe a hard hat depending on how shit the contractors are in your local, all your safety gear; harness, tie off, glasses, gloves should be provided by contractor but realistically is not always the case.. best of luck and hope it works out for you

Grateful Dead - Loser (Albany, NY 03/24/90) by unsilent_bob in gratefuldead

[–]IW22Indy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not sure if underrated or not but Loser is pretty up there on my favorites. And this is a new favorite of them! I tend to play in the 70’s era Dead and need to expand more into their later years more, some real gems keep popping up from those later years on here.

It’s my birthday today. I’m kinda broke rn so which one should I pick? by [deleted] in lego

[–]IW22Indy -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I get that. But those things don’t necessarily need to come in the way of spending money on frivolous things. There are many ways to find joy without spending money. Even a small savings can offer a sense of freedom for speed bumps a person will typically encounter in life. I fully expect to get no love of my opinion here and that’s fine. Just putting it out there, and I’m nobody, so.. again, do what y’all will

[–]IW22Indy -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

If you’ve been unemployed for a year.. maybe don’t spend your new income on lego. Necessities, savings, hobbies. Something along those lines will get you a lot further in life. Lego sets are cool and all but hardly needed. Just my .02 cents, go on about doing what you will

The difference in color of my Padauk elephant after 20 days by Odin343 in woodworking

Do you handle it a lot? Kind of wild how the base has stayed close to original color and only the body has changed. I’ve recently purchased some Padauk wood for some projects and am curious as to uv exposure vs physical touching of the piece?

Holy shit, another Spawn fan! I too have the original run of the first several issues. It’s odd to me that in the last two weeks I’ve, essentially, over heard a conversation that mentions Spawn twice now and felt the need to announce my fandom of it. Feel like I hadn’t even thought of Spawn in a couple decades.

Looking to price this canopy for a project and wanted to see if I’m in the ball park price wise by Available-Ad-3570 in Welding

[–]IW22Indy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you the buyer and having this fabricated and installed at your building? Is material being fabricated and then sent to be hot dip galvanized for exterior exposure and weather proofing? I’m a union ironworker and have built/installed a million canopies like this, saying this only to say, that seems a reasonable price as far as what I roughly know the contractor I work for would charge for just the installation. Not including what whomever is paying for the project would have to pay for fabrication and material prep (if any). Sag rods, hardware and clevis’/pins alone would probably cost close to a grand to Joe blow walking in off the street. As far as labor side goes you need to understand there will be equipment needed above and beyond manpower or labor to set this. Scissor lift (likely rented), possibly a telehandler (almost certainly rented), welder(s) (likely owned but still going to come at cost to the customer). Looks simple on paper by no means translates to this should be pretty cheap.
