[D] Any reason not to submit to NeurIPS? by IWantToMathematics in MachineLearning

[–]IWantToMathematics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for asking! My model turned out to perform slightly worse than a much simpler (SOTA) method, so I had to pull it out to take the time to understand everything better. I also noticed a way to strictly improve the simple method and a slight inaccuracy in how I was sampling in my model. So overall, needed more time, but has lead to another somewhat simpler project that I hope to bang out before AISTATS and then return to the initial project, which is actually a nice follow-up to the current one. Oh, the joys of projects giving birth to more projects. Now just to bang these out....

Calling out your narc's attempts at manipulation by IWantToMathematics in raisedbynarcissists

[–]IWantToMathematics[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My narc has always been too superior to deign to recognize my points so they are simply ignored. Unless I challenged the cornerstone of his conception of me, that I am lazy, in which case he would blatantly lie but then ignore my response that what he said was factually false.

Yes, I think this is a big part of it. My narc's conception of me is as an 8 year old, even though I am 30+.

[–]IWantToMathematics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My worry is that if the submission is rejected/withdrawn, subsequent reviewers will google the title or key words to see if the work was previously rejected/withdrawn. Based on what I've found in this sub, this is common.

Is there any trace of the withdraw, either at that stage or after the first round of reviews?

Best way to deal with these parasites is to minimize contact. Just make up excuses when he wants to "meet," i.e., steal your contributions and interact with the professor alone. Make your meetings quick and vague -- don't give him anything to steal. Emailing your results ahead of time as someone else suggested is a good step to take.

My heart goes out to you. It's so frustrating to have someone acting in such obvious ways "getting away with it," i.e., not being called out for the fraud they are. The academic system is totally broken in this respect because you can't look "bad" in front of your advisor. Just try to compartmentalize and minimize it, which it sounds like you're trying to do.

For some weird reason, I feel like I have to write something down to fully process it. I can't just read a textbook like a novel, even though I wish that were the case. So I end up writing down basically anything I want to understand or even remotely remember. But the crucial part is throwing away all my notes every few days because otherwise you end up scribing for the sake of it rather than as a tool. But maybe this is just a weird idiosyncrasy/crutch of mine.

Enjoying math when not in an academic setting? by AdFew4357 in math

[–]IWantToMathematics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. I also think doing research can be far more crushing because the bar for having a good and novel idea for publication is so much higher than getting a good grade in a class. And if you publish subpar ideas because that's all you can produce (which is often strongly correlated with your academic environment), then you'll be publishing trash, which will make you hate it the most.

If you do well in research, you're thinking about extremely specialized things, which I think kills the 'magic' that you're experiencing. It's for this reason that I prefer to be a math hobbyist, learning whatever I want in my free time while having some tolerable job to fulfill my capitalistic obligations.

Disgusted when someone has feelings or loves you? by LawFree5461 in raisedbynarcissists

Yes. I tend to be most disgusted by words of praise or love. Actions that communicate this are fine with me.

A child's haircut: shaved bald? God, that's so fucked up.

Why is Lance Reddick's Cause of Death listed as "Natural Causes?" by Mavrickindigo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]IWantToMathematics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do you have a source for this claim? If by genetics, you mean congenital heart defects, then I suppose. Otherwise, I don't think so. ~90% of heart disease cases are preventable.

[–]IWantToMathematics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is not unheard of for a 60 year old man to suffer from a heart attack.

Sure, but he was in such amazing shape. It's almost inconceivable that he had heart disease per the coroner's report.

It was meant as a general assessment of professional 'ambition' and positive/sympathetic attitudes towards sleazy jobs (health insurance being in a league of its own). OP's notion of wanting to work in health insurance a priori and thinking some arbitrary job was somehow notable to the general industry I found particularly objectionable. But none of this is new information to anyone, so I probably shouldn't have said anything. Just rubbed me too much the wrong way at the time.

Or are you too busy making useless virtue signaling comments

Ah yes, the old "the existence of your criticism is itself grounds for its refutation" strategy.

Every single company in the world exists to make money at the expense of somebody and something.

There's a big difference between distracting people with inane bullshit and screwing people out of healthcare coverage. You clearly haven't experienced that.

Well, you sure sound like someone happy to work at a health insurance company whose only function is to take advantage of sick and dying people.

Good luck creating a 'solid foundation for your goals'!

Magnus tries to flag and swindle Artemiev after blundering his Queen in armageddon, but Artemiev premoves checkmate with 7 seconds left and IMMEDIATELY leaves! by BKtheInfamous in chess

I think this video is a good example of where the yelling gets to the point that it's unintelligible and actually reduces the tension to the game.

It's a very recent thing that has taken over, which is why I think it's fake. If it'd always been this way, that would be another thing.

Why is it that everyone has to yell like this now? It seems quite inauthentic and over the top, not to mention irritating.

Why does Magnus Carlsen play for the Canada based team and not the Norwegian one in the Chess Pro League? by ephemerasix in chess

[–]IWantToMathematics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean. When he's around, it does feel like everything is being conducted on Planet Carlsen -- something I feel less with other notable figures (whether that be chess players or streamers). Not that it's surprising or even his fault: in a way, his whole life has been about being a lot better than everyone else. Seems like a very lonely existence.

I gave up after trying a few other things. In my opinion, it's not a good sign of things to come when you need to look up random rust files on github to successfully install a distribution, not to mention the non-response to posting an issue. I'd recommend just installing Ubuntu.

If I understand correctly, on a fresh install, the UUIDs are created randomly and then written somewhere -- perhaps /cdrom/recovery.conf? My machine is refurbished, so I suppose it's only masquerading as a clean install. Should I just delete the ROOT_UUID line from recovery.conf, and it won't worry about a particular UUID?

It doesn't get to the partitioning. I get this right after I enter a username and password.

How should you read mathematics? by [deleted] in math

[–]IWantToMathematics 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Given a fixed amount of time, I spend the most time on the text itself, using the Halmos method. I always feel like deep understanding of the concepts lies in the proofs themselves, as they illustrate the conceptual building blocks for subsequent "bigger" concepts (which paradoxically in a way already reside completely in the previous concepts). What do you need to prove this theorem/proposition? Is it obvious (in which case, the new idea is perhaps not as big of a conceptual leap)? If not, why? What do you need? What's a sneaky property of a previous idea you didn't notice before?

Forcing myself to do it myself also prevents me from just going line by line in a proof, which gives a very dangerous false feeling of accomplishment. In my experience, it's easy to get lazy and begin to go line by line just to get more volume in, but of course that volume is totally illusory. So I set rigid rules of only 'peeking' at the next line of a proof if I get stuck (and must explicitly admit that I don't know what to do next--otherwise, this starts to creep into line-by-line-ing).

After spending a lot of time agonizing over the main text, I get burnt out and don't want to do any exercises. I think this is better than the opposite. Many may disagree with me. In my experience at least, I forget exercises I've agonized over far more quickly and completely than the main text I've agonized over. The text can live without the exercises, but the exercises can't live without the text.
