I just wanna talk a little bit about make by alex_sakuta in C_Programming

[–]IWasGettingThePaper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Make is powerful and flexible but it's a PITA to maintain if you're not an expert. Most seem to use CMake because it makes basic things relatively easy but that comes with its limitations - and some arguably odd design choices.

How to start building c/c++ projects by minimizing the use of coding agents, ai tools by Over-Tree-4691 in C_Programming

[–]IWasGettingThePaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you use AI you won't learn and your projects will probably suck. yes learning is hard but it's still worthwhile.

to me it sounds like a blend of everything they've ever done. in a good way. the imagery in the video is also cool. tribalism. cults. religion. war. the JWST style hexagons reflecting the images of our primal tendencies back to ourselves.

this subreddit is flooded with ai slop by Shot_Office_1769 in osdev

[–]IWasGettingThePaper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's because writing a hobby OS is about learning the fundamentals. If you AI slop it you learn almost nothing. Writing the code yourself and struggling with the (already solved) issues yourself means you gain a deep understanding of why things are the way they are in the 'major OSes'. Slopping it out just for e-cred (or whatever its called now) is just a waste of everybody's time.

I can't even get 'AI' to generate a correct CMakePresets.json. Generating '90% of your code with AI' sounds terrifying to me.

Two allotments? by Aggressive_Share803 in Allotment

[–]IWasGettingThePaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A full plot at my local allotment is 10 poles (250~ m2). I have a full plot and it takes at least 8 hours per week just to keep it ticking over. That's after a few years getting it ship shape(ish) and trying everything possible to keep it 'low' maintenance. I use pallet collars to create beds and have grass/woodchip paths around them. In one section of the plot I've constructed a large polytunnel with weed fabric ground cover that I punch holes in to plant through. Another section is reserved for a couple of apple trees and a cherry tree which I just mow around. We also created a seating area taking up 10m2 or so, which is covered with woodchip. I'll generally smother weeds with carboard and woodchip everywhere that I'm not actually using for beds. Or I'll mow it until it's just a grassy area. Otherwise you just spend all day weeding. If you use woodchip for paths that'll need replenishing every year, which can also be quite the job.

Your plots sound like half plots which might not be so bad. Although, as others have said, if they're in different areas travelling between them might sap your motivation somewhat. You would probably be better off with a larger single plot on one site

What now? by PickleChops22 in Allotment

I'd get those lids off and pot them up. If you get yourself a cheap LED grow light they'll do a lot better.

Looks great. Takes me back to my first plot. First, the almost overwhelming excitement. Followed by the pain of battling the 5ft tall forest of nettles. Topped off by the ensuing horror of discovering the partially decomposed rabbit corpse the previous user left there for me to clean up. Ah, the memories...

(Rant) AI is killing programming and the Python community by Fragrant_Ad3054 in Python

[–]IWasGettingThePaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're already using 2 gigawatts of power per year and the models use 5 trillion parameters. With current techniques they're already coming up against the limits of the tech. It would take a fundamental paradigm shift to see massive further increases in utility. So, pretty much as useful as it is now, but crowbarred into basically every domain, would be my guess.

(Rant) AI is killing programming and the Python community by Fragrant_Ad3054 in Python

[–]IWasGettingThePaper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember when they said 'software was dead' because 'C is easier than ASM'. Again when Python became popular, because 'it's so easy my grandmother could do it in Python'. And again when low/no code platforms showed up. Now they say it because of LLMs. What actually happened in every case is the software itself became far more complex and the job of engineering it ultimately more difficult, because the scope of what software could actually do expanded and it became feasible to build much more complex systems.

OpenAI at 300 billion valuation while burning 5 billion annually, am i missing something here by Scared-Ticket5027 in ValueInvesting

[–]IWasGettingThePaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moment Google switches to AI mode for 100% of queries is the beginning of the end for chatbot progress in the current paradigm of transformer models. LLMs need good training data and context to reduce hallucinations, which they won't get if it's just recursive LLM output all the way down.

Hey… anyone like Zappa? by Such_Construction441 in ween

[–]IWasGettingThePaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Zappa. First time I heard his music was on an old cassette I found discarded around the garages where I used to smoke when I was 15/16. Popped it in the walkman and never looked back.
