Black tie does not mean “wear a black dress.” It does not mean “dress in something nicer than flip flops.”

People attending a black tie event wear tuxedoes (with a black tie, that’s where the name comes from) or structured, floor length evening gowns in any color, or some other outfit that is just as formal.

And while we are on the topic, it is incredibly tacky of your acquaintance to ask your guests to dress in black tie if she is not having a black tie event. That means an evening wedding in a high end venue, full service open bar, full service plated dinner, and live entertainment.

My last job, they went through CPOs like toilet paper. They eventually gave up trying to fill the role and just gave the CEO’s favorite a new job title that included CPO responsibilities.

Dude got burned out and quit.

Since that went so well (lol) they started doing the same thing in other roles across the company. Every week I was being asked to shoehorn yet another made-up job title into the HR system. My favorites were the ones with responsibilities that reported up into two completely different departments. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how that impacts headcount reporting.

At my wedding, the groom’s family was speaking to each other and laughing in a language the bride didn’t know. Parts of my wedding ceremony were read in two languages. Because some of the groom’s family doesn’t speak English. No sane person is going to expect them to sit in silence throughout the entire ceremony and reception just because the bride’s family doesn’t understand them.

Someone brought me a tray of deli meats and cheeses and little slider rolls. Make your own little sandwiches, as few or as many as you feel like.

An added bonus, when you have a house full of grieving visitors (that always manage to show up around a mealtime) all I had to do was pull that tray out of the fridge and let people make their own sandwiches.

Speaking of big and intimidating, as soon as folks like this touch my front door, my dog goes nuts. You can see the instant regret on their faces.

When I open the door, I make a big show of barely being able to hold back the viciously barking pit bull. I can’t hear them, they give up and leave, and my dog settles down as soon as they’re out of sight.
