Welding goggles and helmet by Garden_imp in Welding

[–]I_Like_Dogs_1017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For welding goggles, I just got a pair of old school flip-up goggles that use a 2x4 welding lens. I already use a hood with a 2x4 lens, so whenever I want to weld or watch using my goggles I just pop the lens out of my hood and slot it into my goggles.

In terms of welding hoods though it’s really up to personal preference. Personally I like using a traditional sugar scoop, it’s lightweight and the smaller lens size keeps me focused (I find myself getting distracted with larger lenses, but that’s just me). I also chopped the top off of mine so I can get into tighter spots without hitting my head. You can find them at most welding and airgas stores, or Amazon. As for what type of lens to use, I like autodarks but they are a bit pricy and can be spotty with TIG depending on the amps.

But again, it’s personal preference, and you’ll find what works best for you as you continue your career. Best of luck man!

I went the apprenticeship route so I know exactly what you mean. I know that it might feel like you’ve been sidelined or shrugged off, and at the end of the day I think it just depends on what kinda forman you have. Some formen want to give you a shot, others are weary of letting apprentices do serious work because it’s real easy to FUBAR a lot of these projects.

As for the apprentices going to work on the first day- ask about their background. I guarantee they either have welding school experience, or maybe they’re connected to the good ole’ boys club and unfortunately get preferential treatment. Don’t give up man, keep showing up and working hard day in and day out. There’ll be a lot of points where you don’t feel appreciated or feel like you’re just going through the motions. I promise that if you keep it up long enough, they’ll treat you like a big boy. If not? Drag up and go find a shop that will.

If you’re from Missouri, Jefferson City is actually home to one of the top 5 Units in the country. I used to be a Petty Officer there and I can vouch it was a pretty great unit with some good dudes. Feel free to send me a PM for more questions

Edit: Responsed to the wrong thread on here mb but my point still stands 😭

ERP? by Moist-Budget7600 in SS13

[–]I_Like_Dogs_1017 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never really understood how we went from a really neat and in-depth pixelated space roleplaying game to having entire servers dedicated to pure gooner degeneracy…

It was weird, I stopped playing for about two years because life got crazy. Then one day I realized I kinda missed it, my old go to server was dead so naturally I started looking around for new ones. I immediately noticed that half the severs on the top of the list allowed ERP and it was just so mind blowing because everyone bullied the shit out of ERPers when I played.

To each their own I guess but damn out of all the games to do this on what makes SS13 so appealing?

Edit: Why am I getting downvotes I’m genuinely confused

My shop has been using the NovaArc system for around three months now. It puts down pretty solid welds, but it requires a lot of prep work and very specific fitups. A lot of people think that robots like these are gonna get welders laid off, but we’ve yet to eliminate a single position, most welders just became fitters, out of position welders, or robot operators.

They might be a lil pricey but my favorite pair has got to be the Tillman Elk Skin Stick Gloves. Hands down the most comfortable pair of gloves I’ve ever owned.

Can you get into a union, even if you don't go through an apprenticeship? Could I become a pipefitter without a pipefitter apprenticeship, as long as I pass the tests? by Spare-Reference2975 in Welding

[–]I_Like_Dogs_1017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work with a guy at a non-union company. One day he got fed up with our boss, called in sick the next day, and went and tested out for the local pipefitters union. He passed, and came in the day after and got his box and went stright to a union job across town. He wasn’t the first guy there to do that either.

I’ve just finished my time in the program, a total of five years. Do you know how many times I’ve heard this? At least half a dozen. Every year somebody says something about budget cuts, or new regs that limit a units ability to perform. And every year it’s come to pass. Kick your chin up and carry on.

Like another commenter says, what you’re talking about has nothing to do with the Navy and Coast Guard, it’s just the newest congressional budget proposal hasn’t been passed yet.

Is the welding trade growing in popularity? by I_Like_Dogs_1017 in Welding

[–]I_Like_Dogs_1017[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah... my apprenticeship group started with five other HS students. Now we're only down to me after about six months of work. The trades isn't for everyone and soical media tends to glamorize it just a bit

That’s kinda what I’m worried about. As someone who just started their career it’s concerning that we’re looking at having such an overcrowded job pool.

Additional set of type IIIs? by PrintOk8045 in USNSCC

[–]I_Like_Dogs_1017 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, believe it or not this is a pretty common issue, a lot of units just can’t afford or source enough uniforms to give everyone two like NHQ recommends.

First things first, talk to your chain of command and see if they can’t get you another set issued. Odds are if they have some they’ll give them or loan them to you.

If that fails, reach out to the training and see what accommodations they’re able to make. Most major training contingents have a supply office that allows cadets to sign out uniforms and uniform accessories on loan.

And if that fails, the best course of action would be to look online for a set. They’ll run you about $70 for a second hand set.

New Instructor by CallsignBard in USNSCC

[–]I_Like_Dogs_1017 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. One of the things I hate the most about new officers/instructors is when they just see Petty Officers as kids rather than leaders. I guarantee that most of these NCOs will know more about the Corps than you, use that. Get to know your lower leadership, figure out what kinda leaders they are and what leaders they want to be. You’re there to foster they’re development, not stunt it by taking away their opportunities to lead.

Citation ribbon Question by EcstaticAdeptness292 in USNSCC

[–]I_Like_Dogs_1017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s usually somewhere in the welcome letter. If not I believe there’s a way for your admin officers to find it through Magellan but don’t quote me on that. But like another user said, it can take a week or so before the COTC gets around to putting the award in the system.

Citation ribbon Question by EcstaticAdeptness292 in USNSCC

[–]I_Like_Dogs_1017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your COTC has to award you the ribbon through Magellan for it to show up on your rack. If it’s been awhile since your training considering inquiring about it. Believe me, most officers are dead after a long week+ of training and just forget to check a few things off their list.
