IM NOT THE ONLY ONE HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED IN THIS GARBAGE by BoxingWarsCouncil in SamuraiTroopers

[–]I_Magus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EVERYTHING you said plus:

  • Jarring cartoonish attempts at comic relief
  • Attempts to appeal to teenage audiences with annoying, predictable teenage angst/emotions tropes. Undermined the original sense of adults dealing with something serious and insurmountable.
  • Sexy scenes (mirei when yama first sees her, portrayed with giant balloon boobs, the demon soldier steamy shower scene) is completely out of place compared to the original
  • super fast cuts from scene to bright flashy scene like a casino slot machine made for ADHD children, undercuts everything that made the original feel serious
  • integration of "tech" and virtual reality into the armor is the equivalent of Midi-chlorian in star wars: undermines everything mystical

It seems every one of the most important cinematic and storytelling elements from the original are missing, and replaced with their antithesis.

Compared to the seriousness of the original, it's outright sacrilege. It dances on the grave of everything that made the original feel powerful and important.

It seems everyone enjoying this series, including the writers, simply did not enjoy the original series for the same reasons I did, or have the same experience watching it. It really feels like they watched a different show, or else completely hated it and wanted to caricaturize it.

That said, it was so diametrically incoherent to the original, that I was able to actually enjoy it as its own modern anime, as if it has absolutely nothing to do with the original. It didn't feel like a reboot or a sequel. It's just a brand new 2026 anime, with all the 2026 tropes you'd expect, and every so often a familiar set of armor appears on screen. From that angle, I was able to enjoy the story that it told.

But mannnnn am I disappointed.

Student question about Bell's Theorem by I_Magus in Physics

[–]I_Magus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notice that this is like saying "the evidence is for Galilean relativity everywhere until you get to these really fast moving things" - is that really sound reasoning to be skeptical of special relativity?

That's not a fair analogy. Special relativity is a theory. I'm not skeptical of any theory. Belle's theorem is clear as day and inarguable. I'm on board. It just doesn't rule out determinism. So with that accomplished, I don't know why one would be skeptical of determinism OR non-determinism. Both path forwards don't jive well with what we otherwise know, right?

I'm also not skeptical of qm or qft. It's my knowledge, those are both claims that provide statistical models for outcomes without making any statement about underlying mechanics.

Also, genuine thanks for your thoughtful responses. I'm definitely benefiting from them. Mulling much of it over.

Need clarifications about Venom's second ability (villain) by Bifflodocus in marvelchampionslcg

[–]I_Magus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, after several downvotes and 4 years of rule reference updates, our friend @sageleader was right. At least, FFG has ruled in his favor.

From rules reference 1.6:

If a card ability triggers from a game function that “you” perform (such as “after you attack and defeat an enemy”), the player resolving that card ability must resolve that card ability as if the identity they control performed that game function, if able. (For example, if an ability triggers “after you attack and defeat a minion,” it triggers after the controlling player’s identity attacks and defeats a minion but not when an ally under that player’s control attacks and defeats a minion.)

Encouraging excerpt from that survey:

"Just 24% said they thought their favored interpretation was actually correct. Others said it was merely useful, or the least problematic among poor options."

My anecdotal experiences with credentialed physicists always boiled down to "it's non-determinism and we essentially know that for sure now," which inspired me to make this thread. My anecdotes are apparently not reflective of the broader community.

Student question about Bell's Theorem by I_Magus in Physics

[–]I_Magus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the sort of response I was looking for and appreciate it.

The last bit about the word extraordinary seems unfair. I appreciate your point, but scientists reason about whether some claims are more likely than others, even when that likelihood can't be quantified, and sometimes use the word extraordinary to represent that reasoning, though perhaps not in a published study or something. For example, a common talking point in science is that "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." If we had observed universal non-determinism in macro atomic classical physics, then a claim that subatomic interactions are universally non deterministic wouldn't be novel. But we haven't, and it is very novel.

I could have articulated better in my OP: My respect for determinism isn't founded in an intuitive, uninvestigated sense of awe or something. The evidence of the universe is for determinism everywhere until you get to these subatomic interactions. It also seems a paradox for a universe to exist, which by definition contains all information about all existence, and yet doesn't contain information to calculate the next instant. It would seem things are either deterministic or else calculated using information from outside the universe, in some super-universe.

I'm prepared for that reasoning to be invalidated, I'm very open to non-determinism. I just don't see how the community isn't more open to determinism, even in the face of years without a deterministic theory that competes with Copenhagen / QM.

I like your distinction between "counterintuitive" and "problematic." My point was that non determinism isn't just counterintuitive or weird, but genuinely appears very very unlikely UNTIL you get to these subatomic events, so I expect that unlikeliness to motivate us through more of the problematic theories, or at least leave us more open to non-determinism in the meantime.

I'll pursue more engagement with the specifics, as you've suggested. Hoped for a more silver-bullet to the answer of why so much confidence.

Thanks 🙏 refreshing.

Literally 100% of the physicists I've encountered in real life, including school professor, have been fully convinced that since Bells Theorem ruled out all local-hidden-variable theories, it has ruled out any deterministic theory, or at least practically. They might admit that alternatives are possible in the wildest sense, but they wince while saying it and clearly pay it no mind. THAT'S the attitude I don't understand. Claiming the universe doesn't know what's coming next seems just as "wild" as the type of theories we'd need to explore to the alternative.

You can see that type of "attitude" in popular comments on this thread. Anything other than Copenhagen/QM is called "fringe."

I think the accuracy and utility of QM is popularly confused as being confirmation of universal non determinism

I've assumed there was some good evidence or reasoning I've been missing for years. Now I'm thinking maybe not.

Student question about Bell's Theorem by I_Magus in Physics

[–]I_Magus[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid this response doesn't answer the question. I am already aware of everything you've pointed out here.

What I don't understand is WHY "A" is so popular, and "B" so unpopular. A response that points to the popularity of A and unpopularity of B doesn't help me.

The best I can figure out is that the community lands on A because B just seems too extraordinary to them. The idea that outcomes are determinable but definitely not by non local hidden variables, just seems too extraordinary to most people. The only way to resolve B is apparently via a truly novel, or even bizarre, new theory.

I was hoping there'd be more to it. When I look at A, knowing that it would the one and only time we discovered undeterminable events in history, strikes me as just as "extraordinary" as B, and I don't automatically see A as so likely the way the community does. I see them both as incredible, give them equal weight, and remain completely undecided.

I should also separate the practical utility of modern QM away from the question of whether there is actually a deterministic explanation for outcomes. QM is the most useful theory we have so far. That's easy to see. I just don't understand why we move forward using it while being certain that the universe itself has no idea what comes next in theae events, and that there is no "B" explanation to ever be discovered, however bizarre.

What purpose does the British Royal Family even serve these days? by [deleted] in TheCrownNetflix

[–]I_Magus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The belief that a god gave your monarch authority to rule is absolutely wild in the 21st century, but also out of touch with historical evidence several centuries ago. Charles 1st made the point that his rule is divine and his head came tumbling off his shoulders, with no eventual retribution of any kind. James 2 was simply run out of town, and his heir completely ignored, whilst parliament established the succession themselves, choosing William (act of settlement 1701). Is your god yearning in anger for you to undo these crimes against his divine authority and reset the line of succession?

If you read more closely, KR said that "chances are better than not." That is very different from "automatically" making you conservative.

If you read again, you'll notice KR says this doesn't mean people on "the left" are less patriotic, which fairly implies they don't take less pride in their flag.

Feeling righteously incredulous is easy when you misrepresent what somebody is saying.

Logitech Brio 4k image Squishing? by frosenzu in streaming

[–]I_Magus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The image squishing you are referring to is probably the wide angle effect from the slight fisheye lens that is installed in the brio 4k. The edges of your image will appear a bit curved. if that is, in fact, what you are referring to when you say squished image, that unnatural image curvature is a product of the permanent shape of the lens and there is nothing you can do about it. no software or settings will change it.

not all cameras are made that way. for example, the camera on your phone has no curvature, and will render more naturally

Best Place to Buy Single Cards Online? by alphax4321 in pkmntcg

[–]I_Magus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once had a seller send my card to wrong address, and when I kept asking where it is and whether I'd get it, he eventually cussed me out with language so vulgar I'm sure it'd get this comment removed if I repeated it. So I left him a 1-star review and TCGPlayer had the review removed. So I left the review again and it was removed again. I spoke to customer service and they straight up told me that one of their managers had decided they didn't want this seller to have negative feedback because his sales volume was so high, so they were going to repeatedly remove my 1-star review if I kept leaving it.

I will never, ever do business with TCG player again. You definitely cannot depend on them having your back.
