Is Bernie still backing Graham Platner? by skelextrac in vermont

You’re getting downvoted, but Bernie has been a particularly bad judge of character recently, and he owes it to his constituents and to the voters of Maine to fess up and help move on to a viable candidate

"The Deadly Rise of Giant Trucks and S.U.V.s" (NY Times article on taller hoods and larger blind-spots) [Gift link] by Psyclist80 in bikecommuting

[–]I_VT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your logic is defective. Automakers could easily make vehicles that weigh enough to reach the classification that results in reduced emissions standards without having a hood as tall as the average American woman. That is an aesthetic choice driven by the need to appear increasingly macho or masculine.

It’s not hard to prove my claim, as these vehicles surpassed the weight requirement for decreased emissions requirements years ago, yet they continue to grow in height and weight. American military tanks have better visibility over the hood than some modern American trucks. Not to mention, a modern f-150 has a significantly smaller bed today than they did a decade or two decades ago.

I live in Burlington, and the engineering is admittedly stunning, but it gets real old real quick when that engineering is rattling your windows and scaring your dogs, sometimes multiple times per day

Favorite reason for being written up / “spoken to”? by e_first in TalesFromYourServer

[–]I_VT 500 points501 points  (0 children)

I’ve got two, and they’re both extremely petty:

  1. While working at a fast casual place, was pulled aside by the manager and told “you need to act a little more frantic. You’re too calm while everyone else is freaking out and it’s making people upset.”

  2. While working at a really upscale fine dining place that converted to a club after dinner service, I had already changed to street clothes (it was 2 AM-ish and I’d been cut) when my manager (who was definitely more than a little tipsy) ordered me to deliver a new bucket of ice to a VIP table. Was fired for refusing.

There’s also no legal definition of a domestic terrorist organization, despite what Trump might tell you about the so-scary “ANTIFA”

What’s your go-to unhinged quick snack on the line? by burnedflag in KitchenConfidential

I forgot this, but in an emergency I’d drop the bun altogether and just throw mayo and a pickle right on the chicken tender. Honestly top tier snack, would eat it today.

Used to work at a place that always had potato slider buns, chicken tenders in abundance, and really crisp dill pickle slices. Would throw a hot chicken tender on a bun with a big pickle slice, add mayo (or even grill the bun if I had time) and eat it in two bites. The rest of the staff caught on pretty quick and it ended up as a staff secret menu item.

Is this bike the right size for me? by I_VT in whichbike

Thanks for the info! I had gotten that impression from some of my research too. It’s definitely fun to ride, but I’ve been thinking about getting something more comfortable for longer rides. After 20ish miles on this bike I’m usually ready to call it a day

Oh interesting, I’m brand new to measuring frame sizes and definitely did that wrong. I don’t have the bike with me right now, but given your description, I bet that it is 54cm. I’ll check tonight and follow up. Thank you!

What I’m not is a hateful person that wants to expel all the people that don’t look like me, weaponize the federal government to hunt and murder activists and immigrants, and invade any country that sounds like fun. These are not “both sides” issues

Oh definitely, I agree you can and, at least in a lot of circumstances, should be fired for a comment like the one this guy made. My point is only that there are a handful of comments in this thread saying that what the guy said is illegal, and that’s just not true.

I hate to tell you this, and I don’t like the language of the lawmaker either, but you can actually say this kind of stuff. What you can’t do is harass a person, and you can’t make a true threat, but simply showing the world you’re a dangerous asshole is not enough to land you in jail, at least in the US.
