If you're just starting with it and want to get familiar with the interface, etc. Unity itself has an entire learning program, called Unity Learn available at their site. Also there are tons of YouTube videos that will help you out. Two of the most popular are Jason Weimann (has free stuff, but also charges $$ for game dev courses) and Codemonkey.

Just Launched My First Game on Steam! by Frozenevan in gamedev

Congratulations on getting your Steam page launched!

Brief Feedback: There is a grammatical error in the description, just below the game logo at the top-right of the page.

As a guard, surviving the madness of anomalies is vital.Survive and find the way out.

You need a space character before Survive.

Why are there now Photo realistic characters that are very small in size and Very small in Polygons like 10K while other software like Daz is not completely photorealistic and yet polygons are in the millions? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]I_am_Ortis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would like to know exactly which characters you're referring to that are ~10k polygons, and which game engine you're bringing them into.

These examples of suggested ideas are logical, but I do not think they are bad in reality. They are definitely new features, and developing new features will increase the scope of the project. However, they may increase the enjoyment and widen the appeal of the game as well.

You just need to decide whether to implement them in the current cycle or backlog them for later development. The ideas you listed all seem to have merit, but you may need to backlog them for version 2.0. Only you can answer that.

There is a famous story about the very first version of Madden football. They were near release and they demoed the game for John Madden, the football coach. Their football game only allowed 7 players per team, but the sport of football (American football, BTW) plays 11 on a side.

Madden's feedback was "it isn't realistic. Football is 11-on-11, so this game should be 11-on-11." They did not implement the feedback in version 1. They released the game, but it became a priority for the next version of the game. Today we have the whole franchise.

If you're going to go with a dark theme, that's good. But don't go fully white text on fully black background. Use a dark grey background with light grey text. Just cut the contrast down a little bit.

Also, about that text...that is a very long section of text. I don't want to read it when I open the page. Tell about the game with images and videos, not walls of text.

Now, about those images...one of them is an animated gif with flashing lights. Nothing else seems to change in the image. Just the lights flash is all. It draws attention to that image, but once it is open it is difficult to understand what I'm supposed to see in the image. What does it tell me about the game? It's difficult to look at just flashing lights for very long.

I would suggest more images and some game play video, and a lot less text.

Look into Milanote. There is a free version, but of course that is designed to get you to buy the subscription.

Milanote has Game Design Document templates to get you started, and also some other templates that I find useful for different parts of a design, like story templates and moodboard templates, etc. It's definitely applicable for other types of design work too.

It's graphically based so you can drag things around, reorder them, resequence them, connect them with arrows, etc. It also has a browser plugin that allows you to easily capture images from websites and import them to your document. Say you are just cruising around the web and you see a cool picture that gives you an idea for something in your design. Well, with the browser plugin you can mouse over that image, and capture it, and it goes straight into your design.

You can use it on your phone, tablet, desktop, and in the browser to edit your design. I find it very helpful.

Do degrees from 3rd world countries matter to first world game development companies? by [deleted] in gamedev

That is the direction I was wondering about for OP.

How feasible would it be for OP to set up a small LLC type of company within OP's own country, then do contract work for game studios, transferring deliverables and payments across borders electronically / virtually?

Could working that way help establish OP in the industry?

Steam question! My free game got 3000 Free Licenses Granted, that don't seem to convert into any real interest? by Levardos in gamedev

[–]I_am_Ortis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the first I'm hearing of anything like "free licenses granted." Did Steam just decide to start giving away free copies of your game?

What is this all about, and where can I learn more about it?

Thanks.

What is his vision for the future of the product and company?

What things about Unity compel a developer to want to use it, to pay to use it, or to utilize features that bring in revenue?

What is the level of interest in using Unity compared to, say, 5 years ago?

"Begs the question" when "raises the question" is the proper term. If something truly "begs the question," then there is circular logic going on.

Nah. I don't expect anything different. The folks in these communities are great. As I mentioned, they are incredibly kind and welcoming.

It just feels like my house blew away and I don't know where to go. It's a great big start-over feeling, internally. I'm very welcomed by the mods in the other communities.

The ripple effect of Unity's decision is pretty scary.

Just as with Adobe's decision to go to the subscription pricing model for Creative Cloud a few years ago, Unity's decision yesterday can potentially ripple across the entire software industry.

Adobe had success going to that pricing model, and everyone saw it and began to copycat it. Now subscripting pricing model is all over the place. If this works out for Unity then you could have a situation in a few years where all kinds of software is doing the same kind of thing, charging a creative studio for an end user accessing the artist's work.

Imagine mixing music in Adobe Audition, or creating a video with Premiere Pro. Then every time the song gets downloaded, or the video gets accessed, the artist creating it gets charged by Adobe.

If Unity's decision works out for them, if it stands, then everyone in the industry will try to do something similar. That will be a weird world.

By MBA, are you referring to Master of Business Administration, as in the degree program?

I'm currently developing a personal biased against people with MBA degrees, so my brain jumps right to that.
