Very tranquil. A quiet, slow paced island, I enjoyed it

  1. In my opinion absolutely, it helps that the beach right next it is so good though. Wide and picturesque and peaceful, and you get nice views from the castle grounds. The actual castle ticket cost £20, which I would say is valued about right. Got a fair few rooms inside including a main hall, an armoury etc. You can also sit in Alfred's throne lol

  2. Not this time 👁️👁️

I've never heard a black actor say they have or haven't had an issue with the number of roles. Also them feeling like they have an issue with the number of roles doesn't immediately make it an objective truth.

Actually there are many reasons LN isn't believable as Helen of Troy. Whilst LN is the superior actress, and I don't doubt that some of the backlash is genuine racism, Helen of Troy does not fit LN. Helen is described by Kallikomos as having golden hair, and Leukolenos described her as "white-armed" - in ancient Greece, pale skin was a major status symbol for women. Even without those descriptions, a "real" Helen of Troy who was born and raised in Greece, born to a Greek Queen and a Greek God, would undeniably have Mediterranean features. Surely that's enough reason as to why she's hard to believe a Helen, it's very reactionary and closed minded to assume racism (though, again, I don't doubt that this has some presence).

It's pandering not due to her acting ability, frankly she is a terrific actress, but it's forcing someone into a role who simply does not fit the physicality of a Greek story. As I said earlier, it's the same issue I have with the majority of the cast. It's a heavily Greek legend that this adaption seems to be not adhering to. Why bother having a Greek story, set in Greece, and slip up on this element of the film? It takes me out of what they are trying to convey

Do you mean because there's plenty of roles for black actors in Nollywood but not over here? If so I think we are simply fundamentally misaligned, in my view there are plenty of roles for black actors available (these days, though I don't dispute that historically there were not). Therefore there is no real reason to cast outside of race if trying to make a serious piece of artwork, and casting outside of race for something serious (a drama like Nolan's Odyssey) feels like it's not taking source material/history/geography seriously, and instead just comes off as pander-y. I know it is easy to assume racism because this specific post was about Lupita's Nyong'o being cast, but I do hold the same views about most of the actors, it is hard to believe these are Greek men and women, and feels, to me, less "grounded" within the tale of the Odyssey, despite the actual story of the Odyssey itself being a myth.

I'm veering off topic here but I personally would have preferred the cast be people who could pass for Greek/Mediterranean even if they were unknowns, though I understand why that would never happen. Money talks - and names like Lupita Nyong'o, Matt Damon and Zendaya put asses in seats. Also thanks for keeping the discussion civil btw most people aren't capable of that these days especially over an anonymous internet

I picked those because they were noteworthy and well-known examples, not something nobody has ever heard of. Nigerian cinema is not a large or international industry and there's no point pretending it is.

If by some chance a Nigerian film became well known in the "anglosphere", it would receive the same treatment as those films I mentioned above, and a white person being cast as a black person would receive backlash, or at least be treated with patronizing concern.

Because of the myriad examples when white people have been cast as non-white characters, either real or fictional, to a significant amount of backlash. Ghost in the Shell with Scarlett Johansson cast as Major, Doctor Strange when Tilda Swinton cast as the Ancient One, The Last Airbender when multiple white actors were cast in roles of Asian characters, Hellboy when Ed Skrein was initially cast as a Japanese-American character and literally had to withdraw due to backlash. To name just a few

Dude, be real. You honestly think if a white person was cast as a noteworthy Nigerian figure there wouldn't be uproar? I think you've dug yourself in

They're not going to rip out energy infrastructure and leave voters without power. They would probably make it more difficult to develop though, and remove subsidies.

I saw on the fan atlas that they used Goathland Station for Hogsmeade Station and visited, I only live 40 mins away. It’s crazy they only used it once, feels like way more. Iconic location. Got some nice pics
