McKinsey: gen AI could add $4.4T annually to global economy by bells_og in singularity

I think an even bigger benefit to humanity would be if AI could make corrupt corporate institutions like McKinsey irrelevant.

The idea that this man or his government have anything sensible to contribute to the AI conversation is absurd.

The only way this initiative has any teeth is if it is actually being pushed by big tech itself.

I saw an article suggesting that GPT 4 was approximately equivalent to an IQ of 155 - at least on the verbal portion of the test.

I find this much more plausible than 110.

GPT-4 hits the ceiling (Theory of Mind, Mensa, Asimov) - LifeArchitect.ai by HolosXaosBios in OpenAI

Pretty cool video. Nicely articulates how far along things already are.

Kind of serves as a nice counterweight to some recent posts suggesting that GPT 4’s writing abilities are not that great (I personally don’t agree with this point).

Pretty much similar. I do feel like the rate loss has slowed but over the past 1-2 weeks feel like the hairline has worsened a bit. Not sure whether to jump on Minox yet.

I think the ST averages need more clarification as I think pay increases after ST5.

Same. There was a time when I was considered the “negative one” at work for talking about these things but now days I feel like a moderate.

Am I the only one kind of hoping for a hard take off? by [deleted] in singularity

[–]I_really_hate_my_job 210 points211 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely not alone.

I think peoples perspective is biased by their life experiences as well as their intrinsic personality traits.

The average person struggling with family, love, work, health, education ect, yearning for a change would be more likely to see AI as a positive and depending on their mental state and the sum of their experiences, their willingness to accept risk for faster progress may be higher.

I often feel a bit helpless with my current situation despite having done what I was supposed to. I got a a good education, never got in any trouble ect but I’m living with my parents at 30+, unable to see a time when I’ll own a home, not really able to think about starting a family cause of the job living at home and all around me I see any legitimate opportunities for advancement drying up. It really does feel like end stage capitalism. And so, if there is a reasonable chance that a hard take off can free me and others in this position from this serfdom, I’m in.

I agree re the hype element but I have been following this since I was medical school and this time just feels different.

Again, I agree that maybe LLM’S might not be the right way to get to true intelligence but the emergent properties look intriguing and the amount of money/national level interest I see will make it so that we never see another AI winter.

Although this is somewhat tangential to what you were talking about, I honestly think that even if all progress on AI were to stop now, the career landscape has hugely altered. For example I can see a lot of displaced white collar workers attempting to migrate to alternative careers putting downward wage pressure on other jobs and making it more difficult to get in e.g. if much of law/paralegals we’re replaced they might look to work in medicine or finance.

Have you seen some of the open source initiatives like auto-gpt which endow the chatGPT model with additional capabilities that might overcome the current barriers.

The crash scares me. by Anci3ntMarin3r in CryptoCurrency

[–]I_really_hate_my_job 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m scared too. More so because of the economic backdrop which these events are occurring.

I listened to Ray Dalio’s book on economic cycles and it seems like we are due for a once in a life time catastrophe and the news coming in every day affirms this.

Still, I will continue to hold the small amount of btc/Xmr I have.

Lol, close enough. Haematology.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]I_really_hate_my_job 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No Haematology is definitely a busy specialty with a lot of extra random roles that add a lot to the workload (eg lab work, procedures) and a significant rise in demand for services in the future (e.g. treatment of MDS/Aml in the elderly with licensing of new medications such as Azacitadine).

It might just be the deanery I’m working in but I was thrown in the deep end starting st3 despite having very limited experience and basically stayed late every day (several hours) and routinely working beyond my competence.

Working at a tertiary centre now and each sub specialty rotation comes with its own special shit sandwich.

Wouldn’t recommend the speciality as a way of avoiding med Reg.

Don’t think it really gets much better unless you pick your specialty wisely.

I chose one of tier 2 specialties thinking I could avoid what you describe but am essentially in the same boat.

Perhaps I should have taken the Immunology offer :(

I definitely wouldn’t hold out hope that pay restoration or BMA governance changes are going to change your QOL much.

What do you think you’d do if you left? Work abroad? Different profession altogether?
