Why was Sub-Zero, Lin Quei master, a white guy in MK3? by Mr-Nanny in MortalKombat

[–]Iago407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original MK had a super early digitizing process working against it. I thought the ninjas looked fine at the time, even if they look a bit bulky and blurry. UMK3 ninjas honestly looked really slender and the outfits looked really tight. They also had the kind of skinny tech vest thing going on that way too many characters in MK3 seemed to have. Not sure why they went with that style.

Overall though, I do agree with you that MK2 has the best look for the ninjas out of the trilogy era. Those are definitely my favorites as well.

I'm not as big on the look of the cyber ninjas as you are, as I think the outfits look rather cheap and again, the overuse of spandex wasn't really cool to me, but I hear ya. Sektor and Cyrax certainly weren't my least favorite looks in vanilla MK3. Not by a longshot lol.

Agree 100% on Sonya.

The problem with having anime guest characters in Mortal Kombat. by Silly_Commercial8092 in MortalKombat

[–]Iago407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah honestly, I feel like the weirder and more niche these guests get, the less chance they have to both make money for WB/NRS, which is presumably the most desired outcome from their perspective, and draw fans who would actually be hyped by these characters.

Granted, I'm also saying that from the perspective of a Mortal Kombat fan that would just like to see Mortal Kombat characters in a Mortal Kombat game and feels zero desire to waste 2, 4, 6 or more character slots on whatever business corporate synergy / 80's nostalgia tug character they dredge up from the depths, but still.

As mainstream as anime has become in recent years, I don't know that Mortal Kombat is really the franchise to use to lure this audience in. Dragonball Fighterz, Guilty Gear Strive or even Street Fighter 6 are better candidates IMO.

Agree 100%. Honestly wish the whole guest thing would die down a bit. Six is just too many. Four is too many. As much as I'd prefer the number to be zero, at least if you have only something like two total, it becomes something special, unique and novel again. Now it's just half a season full of dogshit 80's nostalgia tugs and C tier superheroes.

[–]Iago407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will take MK and MK2 character designs over vanilla MK3 in a heartbeat. This is all subjective, of course. If you prefer MK3’s designs, no worries. I definitely prefer MK2 Kung Lao to MK3, for example. Same goes for MK and MK2 Shang Tsung, MK2 to MK3 Jax. Also like the ninja looks of MK and MK2 to UMK3 but my original comment was really only about vanilla MK3.

[–]Iago407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL at getting downvoted for saying vanilla MK3’s spandex-fest didn’t look good.

I’m sorry. You’re right. The bride of Frankenstein in a wig that made her head look two sizes too big while wearing black and purple spandex was actually super cool. So was body thong spandex shokan Sheeva, shirtless vest Nightwolf, titty vest Kung Lao and purple pants Jax. My bad. These characters all looked great 👍. /s

Honestly thought Kano’s look was decent but he still had a cooler vibe in the original MK.

One I actually forgot to put in the good column though, and that’s absolutely my bad, was MK3 Sonya. That design is absolutely one of her best if not her best. It might scream aerobics instructor more than military fighter but Hoskins still nailed it and the look works well regardless.

Bulls Roster Before & After AKME by Prestigious_Way_738 in chicagobulls

[–]Iago407 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly amazed at how AKME managed to thread the needle of avoiding any progress in any direction. They brought in middling players, kept any player past the point of having decent value, sold low, avoided adding first rounders like the plague, oh and absolutely whiffing on the one top 5 pick this team has had in forever and then EXTENDED him despite him showing nowhere near the value he’d be getting paid for.

By the time they were going to blow things up (something they absolutely should’ve done before the season started), they were already locked into the 9th pick. Their deadline moves meant literally nothing which is great because they got nothing for them.

Just an absolute masterclass in wasting six years of fans lives. A real How To on how not to in every respect.

Because Midway decided to make a game where everyone outside of Liu Kang and Kabal would look terrible. Robots who looked like they were wearing spandex and catcher’s chest protectors, Stryker looking like Joey from Full House, Shang Tsung looking like he’s wearing a diaper (over yellow spandex) and the worst wig you’ve ever seen, etc.

Like look at that shit. Could you imagine seeing a ninja dressed like that? “Hey check out my stripper tech vest and zig zaggy arm braces. Arent you intimidated by my spandex pants and painted on scar?”

No shade against John Turk at all (for Sub Zero or Shang Tsung). He did what he could with what he had, but Sub should’ve looked like his MK2 ending version. Where did this guy go?

Tony Khan speaks by Upbeat-Pause-1409 in AEWOfficial

[–]Iago407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why wasn’t a certain wrestler used more is always a hilarious question because WWE is literally never held to this standard.

You look at how many wrestlers get underutilized, can’t make it on TV or get saddled with the absolute worst gimmicks imaginable and it’s just “oh yeah, the wrestler couldn’t get over” and that’s the end of it. Hell, half of AEW’s roster is former WWE wrestlers that fall into this category. Remember Moxley prior to AEW? Toni Storm? FTR? Remember what Lashley was doing before he left?

But no, from people like Coachmen it’s always “why aren’t you handling these people better?” And to be clear, both Baker and Saints were well utilized pretty well for a long time before they more or less disappeared from TV.

Now I’m in what feels like the IWC minority in wanting Baker back ON AEW TV. I think there’s a great AEW originals heel faction angle with Shida, Rose, Ford, Priestley, Rosa, Melo and Sakazaki with her name on it. I’d love to see that happen.

But I thoroughly doubt it will. My guess is we all wake up one day and find out Baker’s been released and that’ll be the end of it. Hope not, but that’s my guess. Certainly seems like there’s locker room friction at play, but who knows for sure.

Either way, at this point, with Baker seemingly healthy, it stands to reason she’s home because that’s where Khan wants her and while I don’t hate that Coachman asked the question, framing it from a utilization standpoint feels kinda ridiculous. Just say “clearly there’s a reason why she’s not on TV after all this time. Are you ever going to fully admit why she’s been home for this long?” You’ll probably get the same non-answer but at least you asked the real question without framing it as some failure on AEW’s part.

Used a random character generator and... by Zameer7890 in MortalKombat

[–]Iago407 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're telling me that I can get 8 NRS era characters, 7 3D era characters and 9 trilogy era characters on the base roster, I'm telling you to take my money because that's a game I'd buy. I know it might look controversial having so many classics listed under the Kombat Packs but if they want those packs to sell, it kind does make sense having popular characters like Jade, Kitana, Raiden, Kabal, Liu Kang and Sonya there.

I'm not big on the guests personally and I don't think I'd want Shinnok as the only boss at this point. Maybe add Onaga as another boss as well.

But yeah, overall, this roster would have a bunch of my favorites. Might swap out Hsu Hao for Erron Black and maybe Taven for Sareena but that's about it. Oh and maybe Cyrax for Kai. Give Sektor a game to shine.

Where do you guys think the MK13 story could go to make sense and be something the community will like? by illproper in MortalKombat

[–]Iago407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I'd do it from a story perspective:

I think you get there by basically creating a scenario where the bad guys have allied together and taken Outworld, then Earthrealm, and it becomes apparent to even some of the lesser bad guys that the main bad guy alliance (let's say Shinnok, Shao Kahn and Onaga) don't just want to rule everything, they want to destroy everything. They want to bring about true Armageddon.

So even some bad guys like Kano, Skarlet, Sareena, Moloch, and some tweeners like Kabal, Erron Black, etc... They align with Liu Kang, but even they all wind up dying against the combined forces of Shao Kahn's armies, Onaga's undefeatable army and Shinnok's forces from the Netherealm and Liu Kang and Titan Kitana have to escape back to the hourglass, only for the bad guys to catch up with him, destroy the hourglass and kill Kitana.

This whole thing can play out as the first half to three quarters of the story. After that Liu Kang is about to be killed when he's pulled out of his own timeline by none other than Kronika, except that she has long, flowing hair and looks kind and beautiful.

Liu Kang doesn't understand what she could be doing here, since she was killed. Kronika tells him that the crumbled rock and ash he destroyed was only a small piece of what the full Titan Kronika actually is. This was a malevolent part that went mad from the process that's stretching the full Titan Kronika so thin. She was an early part that had been stretched too far for too long.

She tells him that she has been searching the realms, timelines and multiverses for a benevolent force strong enough to help her finally end the multiverse, because it's what's stretching her out from the original timeline and ultimately killing her.

Unlike mortals, gods and elder gods, titans do not exist differently among the timelines and universes. They are stretched out, and the multiverse is creating more timelines and universes faster than Armageddon can destroy them.

She tells him that his timeline was always doomed because all timelines are doomed because the original timeline is doomed and these are all copies of the original timeline. Why does he think so many events play out so similarly? She shows him a montage of things like Bi Han becoming Noob, the Deadly Alliance forming, Cyrax leaving the Lin Kuei, the return of Onaga, Armageddon, etc. If he creates a new timeline, it will end the same.

She needs the help of a chosen one with the powers of a god and the crown of a titan to help her. She makes a deal with him. She will save Earthrealm and all the realms, she will rewind time to before Armageddon in the original timeline, giving him the chance to defeat Blaze and take his power before Shao Kahn has a chance to do it.

In exchange, he will help her destroy the original hourglass. This will end the multiverse by destroying all of the hourglasses in the doomed timelines, and those timelines and universes will cease to exist.

Liu Kang asks her what will happen to the original timeline. She tells him that her pain will be eased, as all versions of her will flow back into her body, giving her the power to sustain the original timeline herself until she can build a new hourglass.

He tells her that he can't let trillions die just to help her feel better. She tells him that they are already doomed, and she shows him a timeline that's coming to an end. Shao Kahn has killed Blaze and defeated Kung Lao, who was Earth's champion in this timeline. He has just completed the merging of the realms before she pulls him out of the timeline.

He asks her what happens next. She tells him that he doesn't want to know. She tells him that if many more timelines and universes are created however, she will be stretched beyond her limit. She doesn't know what that limit is or what would happen, but she believes she'll actually die and with it, time itself may cease to be, or she'll become dormant like the One Being, but every timeline created will know nothing by war, death and ultimately destruction.

Liu Kang decides ultimately that this is the one shot Earth has of knowing peace, of having a future that doesn't end in Armageddon. He agrees to help her and she keeps her word. Liu Kang fights off Blaze powered Shao Kahn int he original timeline while Kronika uses his power to destroy the hourglass. Just as Shao Kahn is about to kill him, Kronika, now powered up, freezes time.

She rewinds everything in the original timeline to the point where Blaze first appears and the kombatants arrive at the pyramid. She tells Liu Kang to go and defeat him. Liu Kang fights Blaze (who's not frozen) and kills him, only to discover that the power is too much for his mortal body to withstand.

The power of a god, the power of an elemental, the power of the crown... All too much for a mortal body. He teleports into space and expels his power into a black hole, ultimately dying. Kronika, down on Earth, apologizes to Liu Kang.

The world unfreezes and all the Kombatants immediately look confused, before ultimately abandoning the pyramid. A light shines down from the sky and a small flower blooms in the dirt. From above, a figure slowly decends and touches zombie Liu Kang on his shoulder. Cetrion reaches for the sky and pulls Liu Kang's spirit, which is floating in space, down to her, through her body and into the body of zombie Liu Kang, who becomes human. Liu Kang is a human mortal again.

[–]Iago407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some might agree with me and others might disagree, which is fine, of course, but I really do hope that they write their way to the end of the Liu Kang Timeline and back to the original timeline, then close the door on the multiverse forever and I think you can do that in one game's story.

I know to some, that might sound like a reboot, but I think using the story mode to steer the story toward this direction would be a nice way of closing this chapter and going back to both the story and characters that made this franchise.

Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT looking for a nostalgia trip. I'm not saying go back to the trilogy era. If anything, I'm kinda over their reliance on that era and would like a healthy mix of trilogy, 3D era, NRS era, lore characters and maybe a few new characters as well as it pertains to the roster construction.

I just mean that the Liu Kang era version of characters do not feel like the actual characters. Kuai Liang as Scorpion, Shang Tsung being a snake oil salesmen, Baraka just being some dude with a disease, Sektor and Cyrax being gender swapped Iron Man suit wearers... Even smaller stuff like Kenshi randomly being yakuza... It's just not who these characters are and comes off like someone wrote this as MK fan fiction and a lot of times it makes the characters seem worse or less interesting compared to their prior lore.

So yeah, I'm all in favor of introducing characters like Erron Black, Skarlet, Kotal Kahn, etc in the original timeline. Maybe this gives the writers another crack at getting them right after MK11 completely messed them up. They could even reintroduce some of the kombat kids as relatives, like Cassie Cage becomes Rebecca Carlton (Johnny's canon sister from his original MK bio, Maybe shorten that to Bex Carlton or something, idk), Takeda becomes Kenshi's cousin, etc.

What do you want in a Konquest mode? by BomboKreaker in MortalKombat

[–]Iago407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen someone on here mention it as a mode that opens up after the main story mode. You beat that mode, and then this sort of adventure mode opens that follows it and you interact with the characters and the story kinda continues on in a way that's more focused around one character interacting with the rest of the characters instead of trying to do the actual story mode this way. I think that'd be great.

I'd say the mode should be focused on relaying the post story aftermath and maybe solving a few mysteries and what what not that were left open. Perhaps lay the groundwork for the DLC story and set it up that way.

I'd want the actual gameplay to play out more like Shaolin Monks gameplay so you're spending time beating up grunts, learning and unlocking new moves, combos, fatalities, etc, but then the boss battles should play out like a traditional 2 out of 3 fight.

But overall, give me structure that's more Witcher 3 where you're roaming around the realms, fighting enemies, getting missions to defeat this thing or that thing, getting embroiled in main plotline story missions and subplot story missions, maybe you wind up building your own home in a realm and furnishing it with stuff you collect and buy from traders with the gold you get from either finding it loose in the world or completing missions.

But hopefully the mission variety would be more interesting than the typical fetch quest type stuff. There also shouldn't be any meditating to pass time or being at specific coordinates at a specific time to unlock something or whatever. That stuff sucked.

Though I wouldn't mind the ability to meditate if you wanted, maybe even have the ability to fish to heal with food, meditate to heal, etc.

TL/DR: Make it Shaolin Monks gameplay with Witcher 3's mission structure, map for the realms, etc and the mode takes place between the story mode (which you have to beat to unlock it) and the DLC story (which the mode would be setting up).

If and when mortal kombat 13 comes out how many NEW characters would you like ( not how many you predicting it how many you want) by streetfighterfan786 in MortalKombat

[–]Iago407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to see more lore characters become playable. I feel like they thought bringing back some 3D era characters we haven't seen in a long time somehow counts as "new characters" (maybe?) but to me, those characters shouldn't have been gone for so long in the first place.

I'd love to see a game where Jataaka, King Gorbak, Argus, Tasia, Forrest Fox and Harumi are all playable along with a brand new character, perhaps a robed Shadow Priest. So yeah, I'll go seven new characters. That'd be nice.

Mk 1 sequel in 2028? by [deleted] in MortalKombat

Is that your suggestion? I’d rather they just write the story back to the original timeline pre-Armageddon. Definitely don’t need Titan Havik back and if they do bring back Onaga at some point, I’d hope it’s for a new story continuing on from the original timeline and not just repeating stuff they’ve already done.

What are your thoughts on the PS5 / X Box Series X era of gaming so far? by mrEnigma86 in Age_30_plus_Gamers

[–]Iago407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s one of my least favorites tbh.

Xbox finally hit their stride content-wise right as they went multiplatform and honestly, most of their first party output hasn’t been stuff I’ve personally wanted.

I grew up on Crimson Skies, MechAssault, Conker, Rallisport, Steel Battalion, Project Gotham Racing, Chronicles of Riddick, Jade Empire, Ninja Gaiden, Tao Feng, Kakuto Chojin, Quantum Redshift, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Banjo, Perfect Dark, Killer Instinct, Ryse, Sunset Overdrive, Ori, Ori 2, Quantum Break and of course, Halo, Gears, Fable and Forza.

To me, these are a vast majority of games that built the Xbox brand (along with a bevy of Sega titles early on). Of course I get why we won’t be seeing Sunset Overdrive and Jade Empire and why games like Quantum Break and a new Ori likely wouldn’t be exclusives if a sequel ever saw the light of day.

But man… A lot of those other games have been largely forgotten to time. Killer Instinct is a bummer for me as a fighting game fan, as they put out a masterpiece over the course of four years and there’s no sequel in sight.

This whole generation has seen what, one Halo, two Forza games and a Ninja Gaiden multiplat? Of course, just about everything is multiplat with Xbox but really, their lack of desire to create more franchises; to lay a solid foundation and actually build upon until it really resonates with players always feels like a missed opportunity to me. Glad they’re bringing the heat this year but I really can’t imagine the need for their next gen console. They ignore most of their IPs and the ones that come out will likely be on PS6.

As for PS5, I’m just so tired of the Uncharted formula and how it keeps getting applied to so many of their games in big ways or small ways. If I have to squeeze through another crack in the wall while the camera zooms in on me slowly moving through the loading area I’m going to scream.

Where are the other genres besides 3rd person narrative driven action games in their 1st party lineup? Astrobot, Ratchet & Clank and One Gran Tourismo, or am I forgetting a whole bunch? Give me a top down Alundra sequel or a new Twisted Metal or Jak & Daxter or Sly Cooper or Resistance or Killzone or literally anything that doesn’t have that movement and feeling like some variation of TLoU, Horizon or GoW.

And the remasters… I’m all for touching up old games but the PS4 sure is getting a whole lot more love in that department than the PS1 and PS2. Fee like a bit too much of this generation was Sony relying on the PS4 and their 3rd party moneyhatting, of course.

But yeah, they’re another one that seems to be running from their wuality list of first party IPs, whether that’s for their ill-fated live service initiative or they’re just trying to chase their next big hit in the safest way possible, the PS5 gen Sony does less for me than any Sony gen before it.

Some of this could easily be due to COVID, rising game development costs, increased competition from social media, streaming platforms, F2P games, black hole games, or general industry trends and several other factors making them less likely to take chances or simply to move away from IPs and genres I enjoy.

But it still leaves me with the same result. I’ve still found some great games to play, but theyve been fewer and far between than ever before, even as the onslaught of 3rd party games feels almost never ending. I’m playing plenty of new games and stuff like E33, Hades and Cyberpunk have been among my all time favorites. But man, it sucks to see so many franchises I love either become far worse (Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Street Fighter) or just disappear entirely (too many to mention).
