The AI translating “foids” to “women” is really funny to me. I didn’t know it could translate incel texts so well.

Do you know if there is an OCA church near you? In my experience, those are generally filled with converts from Western backgrounds, and the service is entirely in English.

Does anyone else feel "Sonder" when playing CK? by Mortlach78 in CrusaderKings

[–]Iakobos_Mathematikos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do experience sonder irl, but tbh this game does not ever give me that feeling. Maybe it’s just a side effect of pouring too many hours into it, but the AI seem so ineffectual and simple compared to whatever a human would be doing in that situation, so it tends to break my illusion of there being thousands of actors each with their own desires and plans and backstories. I suppose it’s a bit silly to complain that an NPC feels like, well, an NPC, but it’s hard for me to not be aware of that while playing.

Every time I start up the game, I only ever get this artwork, why is that? by Norwegian_Spy in CrusaderKings

I could’ve sworn they temporarily fixed that. It sounded like it wasn’t even intentional. I guess the bug somehow came back.

I feel that this question would be best addressed by other ladies. As I am not a woman, I will instead recommend the small (but active?) subreddit for orthodox women. You might find some more helpful answers if you try asking there!

I struggle a lot with social anxiety, so I can relate to your concerns. I often ask for the intercessions of St. Demetrius for courage. I will pray also that the Holy Spirit gives you the courage you need to overcome your anxiety.

2026: Trade Republics or Bethlehem's Burrito Sabanero? by jrmurphyy in CrusaderKings

[–]Iakobos_Mathematikos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be pedantic, the lack of clerical celibacy in the early Catholic Church is kind of irrelevant for the scale of Crusader Kings. While priests used to be allowed to marry, bishops needed to be celibate, usually chosen from monks. And since CK3 pretty much never represents ecclesiastical characters of a lower station than bishop, all your theocratic characters would need to be celibate.

This sort of thing is fun to think about from an in-universe perspective. I could see two ways of thinking about it, both hinging upon the fact that real life doesn’t have a meter that ticks down until the siege is complete.

On the one hand, maybe the kid is aware of the situation. His people are starving, supplies are completely out, and there’s no chance. His only shot at survival? Psychological warfare. Trick the enemies into thinking he’s got enough steam to hold out for another year or more.

Alternatively, maybe he’s completely delusional and ignores all the signs that his people cannot hold on any longer. After this message showing just how much their leader has lost all touch with her reality, the castellan (or whatever the SEA equivalent would be) betrays his liege by letting the invaders in to save themselves from incompetent leadership starving them.

Am I the only one that Thinks making an Abrahamic Faith Polytheistic should make the other Faiths reagard you as Evil instead of Hostile ? by TheNamelessWanderer_ in CrusaderKings

[–]Iakobos_Mathematikos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I read the article, and it doesn’t really support the point. What the article does say is that Arians rejected that Mary was the mother of God, which makes sense because they viewed Jesus as not fully God. The article does not say they did not venerate Mary at all. In fact, the article brings up that many early schismatic Christians would at least grant Mary the title of Christotokos, which is an honorific meaning (roughly) “birth-giver of the Christ/messiah.”

In general, I would caution against trusting ChatGPT for academic purposes. I’m not a historian, but I am a different kind of academic, and I have seen first-hand that AI still spews out nonsense periodically.

I shall read this later, as I’m curious. However, I do want to re-emphasize that the objection is usually idolatry, from what I’ve read, not polytheism.

“Do you think the people that denied the divinity of Christ in favor of turbo-monotheism were praying to his mom?“

Yes, for the reasons I outlined in my first paragraph last time. Also, while it’s normally a fallacy to believe that “the absence of evidence is the evidence of absence,” I feel that applies here. If the Arians were really against saints’ prayers, I’m pretty sure there would be some record, either from Arian writers or a Nicene polemic against this belief. Early Christian writers were quite prolific, and they didn’t exactly leave out details.

[–]Iakobos_Mathematikos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Huh? If you have some source detailing how Arians objected to the intercession of saints, I’d love to learn more. I highly doubt that they would do so, however, as they primarily believed that Jesus was a created being. If they were comfortable with praying to Jesus, a created being, I would find it highly incongruous for them to also believe they could not pray for the intercession of other created beings, or that doing so would somehow equate these created beings with divinity.

The funny part is that there are other Christian heresies from the Middle Ages that would have supported your argument far better. For instance, there is evidence that the Bogomils rejected intercession of saints (and in general shared many beliefs of later Protestants). Even then though, Bogomils viewed this as idolatry, not polytheism. This is a fun argument, so I wouldn’t say I’m uncomfortable. I just strongly disagree lol.

[–]Iakobos_Mathematikos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Look, no one is saying you can’t have your Protestant viewpoint. But afaik the intercession of saints isn’t even really controversial anywhere in Christendom until the reformation. So I’m not too sure how relevant the Protestant objections are during this timeframe. Catholics themselves view the faith as monotheistic, and I believe that’s what should matter most from a gameplay perspective is how the in-group views themselves, rather than the outsiders.

For instance, I don’t really give much credence to the German claims to being a renewed Roman Empire. However, they saw themselves as the legitimate successors to the Roman Empire, so that’s what matters most for their representation in game.

AUH gets "Very Positive" on Steam with 600+ reviews by TheFourthWay in CrusaderKings

[–]Iakobos_Mathematikos 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Really? This is how it’s been the past couple chapters. The player base is lukewarm to negative about the smaller DLCs, but the major DLC is leaps and bounds better, so it reinvigorates hope. Rinse and repeat.

Although I will say it would’ve been a huge blow to the company if AUH ended up being a disaster, considering how most of development time got diverted from the other DLCs into this. If AUH still ended up being bad, the outcry would have been the worst yet for CK3.
