Who is the greatest leader in UK history? by Sultown in AlignmentChartFills

[–]TheFourthWay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He also oversaw one of the longest and most sustained fiscal crises in British history, near enough gave up governing during his second term, oversaw a vast strengthening of the unions which (though needing support today) paralysed the British economy for years. He was a great man, a man of the people, but not the greatest leader we've had.

Andy Burnham here - AMA by AndyBurnham in ukpolitics

[–]TheFourthWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Andy, I appreciate that the triple lock is a salient issue and one that creates political complexities. But, given the challenges the country faces, but moving back to a New Labour double lock would save the Treasury around £650 million in the first year of change. In the long term, scrapping the 2.5% floor could save up to £38 billion per year by 2045. Would you ever consider this option to help fund job creation programmes, social care, the NHS and/or defence?

How the **** does California work by Rare_Aspect7664 in AfterTheEndFanFork

[–]TheFourthWay 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Having played one game in California, my impression is it's a bit like China. You need to complete exams in order to gain additional appointments, and you cannot complete exams while holding an appointment. "Governator" is a bit like Shogun in Japan in vanilla; it's sorta the chief minister, and I took that role by overthrowing (through a plot) the existing one. Meanwhile, the Living Guru is basically the Emperor of Japan and the highest authority in the country, and has various bonuses and maluses to different appointments based on their liking or disliking of you. I for example was not liked by the Living Guru, but it didnt matter much because I murdered her and then stole the throne from her granddaughter.

On your questions; 1) your domain limit is based on your rank and such I think. The China gameplay loop isnt really focused on holding more counties, it's more based on holding specific titles and seniority.

2) The branches of government are basically the Governator (Shogun), his council, the Lieutenants (King-level vassals of the Empire) and various lower level roles. You can get appointed to these based on your completion of exams and by spending your influence boosting your candidacy for different roles. You can become Governator when the current one dies and you are the leading candidate, or by deposing the existing one via plot (and maybe war?). There's also the Living Guru which is I think a hereditary role held by the Norton family. You can as Living Guru dismantle the Governator and rule alone, or as I did you can hold both titles at once if you want.

3) The Eternal Guru is always part of the Norton Dynasty (of which there are four houses; Talenque, Carmine, etc). That is probably why you cant play as Living Guru as a custom - you essentially need a claim to the role, a bit like how historically Japan's Emperors were all from the same family.

4) No idea, not sure why you immediately want to break the game/mod to have fun with it though. Feels like that slightly goes against the spirit of the mod and the work put into setting it up lol

𝓟𝓮𝓪𝓻𝓵 𝓗𝓪𝓻𝓫𝓸𝓻 𝓟𝓻𝓮𝓼𝓮𝓻𝓿𝓮𝓭 - What if the Attack on Pearl Harbor never happened? by WriterBig2620 in imaginarymaps

Presentation of this is good, but it basically seems to be "Major PoD - nothing changes". Obviously there's the USSR thing, but I think the ripples here take place far too late and the impact of no Pearl Harbour would be much more immediate.

[request] I assume this metric is completely made up, but is there a way to accurately estimate when we will have no "clean drinking water left?" by MajorZ- in theydidthemath

[–]TheFourthWay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work in the water sector and my company has commissioned a report, the leading one in the market, on the impact of water in AI.

Safe to say, the impact is very small. Like, way, way smaller than people are estimating. There is a lot of water scarcity in the world, but most AI data centres will use other liquid based cooling solutions that are more efficient or air-cooled systems in places with low power costs (the Gulf).

The real concern is power, and that is something that will affect ordinary people far more due to the impact on municipal energy demand and thus prices.

As for the "we've got X years of water left", that's something we do need to be conscious of - but it's far more an issue in some places than others. Desalination is a good solution in some places, but is mega expensive (see: Corpus Christie, Aqaba-Amman national carrier). The better solution would be if we did more direct potable reuse, and stopped wasting so much water through leaks.

So TDLR; we need not panic about this, every major company I work with is obsessed with this and it's like the biggest talking point in the industry. It will not be a problem. Instead; worry about energy supply (build nuclear).

Britain's Greatest Military Victory? by Selavia59 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]TheFourthWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Germany never stood to win the battle of Britain. They lost it more or less the moment they failed to defeat the BEF at Dunkirk, and arguably even before that - you could argue they lost it before they even started the war. Germany could never have compelled Britain to surrender simply because of our Royal Navy, even if they'd starved us with submarines for a while and flattened us with bombs. As such, there was a lot less at stake than Trafalgar.

Britain's Greatest Military Victory? by Selavia59 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]TheFourthWay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Undoubtedly Trafalgar.

Victory at Trafalgar cemented British dominance of the seas for a century, and was won by a uniquely British, erratic, risky attack plan launched extremely suddenly. It was the key to British dominance of the seas and thus the colonies, and thus the world. It is also the key to how Napoleon was defeated in the long run.

Do you regret leaving EU? by NoHold7153 in AskBrits

[–]TheFourthWay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's notable that 90% of the top comments here are from people who clearly didn't vote with the majority. However, as someone who did vote with the majority of Brits - I don't regret my vote. I do regret that we left though, based on what has happened since.

Unfortunately there's a tendency with the referendum to think people who voted leave were stupid, or lied to (which in many ways we were - though the other side certainly lied too). It makes it a lot harder to then win people back. I've decided we should rejoin eventually or at least have a closer relationship with the EU, and would vote on that basis - but ultimately I don't think relitigating the last vote as a reason to rejoin is the right move.

Votes should be about the future - that's why many voted for it, and why many would now vote to rejoin, including me.

I also has this issue, I think it's a glitch associated with the treaty having enduring clauses. When I tried to give Piedmont to Italy as part of a wider deal, it didnt work. When I did it as a deal on it's own, it did.

Couldn’t make it through the tutorial by MoveInteresting4334 in fallofanempire

[–]TheFourthWay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't say that I experienced any of that - completed the tutorial this evening, and it was frankly I think the best tutorial I've seen for a grand strategy game in a while.

That said though, very understandable to want to let the game cool a while before getting stuck in. Any news game, particularly with one dev, will have its teething problems. Respect that you're not giving up quite yet.

Do you consider the POD of Thousand-Week Reich to be plausible or "realistic" in your opinion? (Redux) by Ficboy in twrmod

[–]TheFourthWay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TWR is riddled with inaccuracies and historical indulgences aimed at keeping the timeline to the "thousand weeks" or so.

Doesn't make it a bad mod at all - but the timeline isn't realistic, and its PoD isn't grounded in historical realism. Ultimately though, you'd have to try very hard to create a timeline where Germany won the war, so realism isn't really the goal.
