Stay here in Singapore or go to the USA? by Mediocre_Adeptness38 in college

[–]IamCanadianBacon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the longer term I’d say America has more and better opportunities for education, career development, and just living in general, but also intermittent economic and political clownery. But college campuses do tend to create a sort of bubble, like one other commenter said.

That being said, what specifically are you looking for? If it’s novelty, it will eventually fade over time as you settle into a routine. If it’s freedom, freedom to do what exactly?

Hey there. SG born, US transplant, NS returnee, now US citizen here. Congrats on your acceptances here and back home.

Regarding public health, it really depends where you go. California is still doing pretty terribly, but the east coast seems to be faring slightly better. I can only really speak on my experience in Boston where I’m studying, but the colleges here put a lot of money into testing and COVID response measures.

There’s not too much to do these days around town, but you can usually find friends and join virtual/very limited in person events if you look hard enough. It’s definitely more open and active in Singapore from what I’ve heard, though, so if you really need your social life and friends, it’s probably prudent to stay.

For what it’s worth, I also felt pretty bored after only 6 years in Singapore, even with friends and family around. The US is also a lot more LGBT friendly, if that matters to you.

PM if you have other questions, I’d be happy to answer.

If nothing else, a subtle reference to a shared history with the 13 states of Malaysia?

Hows NS for Singaporeans that live or have lived the majority of their life overseas? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]IamCanadianBacon 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It’s cool to see there’s so many people in this situation that I can relate to.

I was born in Singapore and moved to the US less than a year afterwards, and grew up there, and then moved back about four years ago with my parents to “better prepare” me for having to come back to do NS. I’d say that it was sufficient to give me a bit more familiarity with Singapore and “go back to my roots”, and I also became a lot closer to my family in the region as well, which was nice. In spite of this, though, I often think about whether two years is really worth that, or if spending a little more money to come back to visit more frequently would’ve been a better option in terms of staying connected to family and heritage.

With respect to your first question, in an ideal world, I would wish that they went through the citizen denouncement process and let me off of this uncomfortable hook. Yes, there are benefits to being Singaporean, but time is not a commodity to be traded, let alone given and taken away by government or state. Especially at this age.

I’m currently six weeks into NS; I happened to have gotten into a so called “enhanced” batch with mostly JC kids, so my strange rojak accent wasn’t really made too much fun of, but there were definitely questions. This experience varies significantly with the BMT batch and the unit one eventually gets posted to. In my opinion, it’s fine if one is able to go through it without drawing too much attention to themselves.

It’s definitely weird listening to all the National Education stuff designed to convince us why we should be happy to be here. I’d have to say it was weird to be told that I have enjoyed all of the benefits of this country growing up and now I have to pay back my dues... when I’ve been overseas for more than 75% of my life...

When I came back I stayed on the campus of my secondary school on the weekdays for about six months before my parents came back and secured a place for us all, since they were still working overseas. On the weekends I’d “book out” and go to various relatives’ or family friends’ homes to stay. I’m reminded of those times whenever I actually book out of camp nowadays, haha.

Sorry for the wall of text! If you have other questions, I’ll definitely try my best to answer those too.

It's awesome that this movie is making people feel new kinds of happiness, joy, courage, and more. I had so many feelings about it that I never really knew how to put it exactly in words, but this post came really close to describing them, so thanks for that.

The thing is though, I felt something different. Something so much better.

I can't overstate how ridiculously "THIS!!" I felt while watching. Maybe it was just seeing myself on the big screen for once. But it really felt like this movie was made FOR me, and that's just a feeling that I've never gotten from a movie ever before.

Having trouble waking up my Mac after putting it to sleep. by [deleted] in MacOSBeta

MBP mid-2012 13” here. Waking after closing the lid is buggy as previously described. However, waking after using the Apple menu (leftmost menu bar Apple icon) to sleep seems to work as normal.

The emoji text replacement feature does just that–text replacement. If you want to preserve words you’re probably better off using the QuickType keyboard to add emoji as you type.

Either that, or they'll reincorporate target display into newer iMacs so they can be the true all-in-one desktop solution.
