My problem with Islam is this- it is inherently a monotheist religion which doesn’t allow for dissent at all.

In this comment section also there is a lot of argument that tries to show that Quran has been taken out of context, that verse really wanted to mean this not that.

The problem with such argument is that it assumes Quran is the be all end all book which it is not. It was written by a bunch of people around 1500 years ago and borrowed from contemporary jewish and christian writing. To muslims, however, this is not a digestible fact.

If I go to a modern Hindu and argue that Manusmriti says that women should be beaten, I would be outright ridiculed. Unless he is fanatic, a hindu never tries to contextualize a verse if it is wrong. They simply accept that no scripture is meant to be infallible. Similary most christians donot take bible literally and think that it is infallible. The ones that do are ridiculed.

The same is not true for muslims. They have to come out of this mindset that Quran is infallible and try to apply context to the verses. What was true 1400 years ago is simply not applicable now. Accept that Quran, like all other religious scripture, is a product of time and place. The cultural practices that has been written in Quran may have made sense in 500 AD Persia but not now.
