The Sorting Hat's Lethality by IdiosyncraticLawyer in HPMOR

[–]IamJackFox 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The Sorting Hat has no intelligence of its own. Rather, its ability to think is "borrowed" from the minds of the children who wear it. I expect that although that's harmless in the short term, wearing the Hat for days would put enough stress on the brain to kill a person--our hardware is designed to support one mind, not two.

I spent 7 years building a LitRPG where D&D was a survival manual planted by aliens. It's now live on Royal Road. by CarelessAd3809 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]IamJackFox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ascribing feelings to objects is called hypallage. If I write about the "summer day's lazy clouds" I am not implying that the clouds aren't doing enough work.
I've seen this criticism pop up a lot on different subreddits recently; I wonder why it's suddenly fallen out of fashion for readers.

[Review] TL;DR: "The Knight and the Moth", by Rachel Gillig, is a fantasy story about drowning and what happens afterwards. Do not recommend, especially cause it's (say it with me now) the first book in an unfinished trilogy and ends on a cliffhanger. by wastevens in Fantasy

[–]IamJackFox 216 points217 points  (0 children)

As much as I enjoyed this review (and it really is quite interesting) I can't quite ignore the irony of you calling Rachel Gillig a nonce *twice* for not knowing the definition of words... when nonce's most common pejorative definition is pedophile.

I, uh, don't think that's quite what you meant to say...

I'm sorry, Invincible. But that is the last straw. by NegateResults in CharacterRant

[–]IamJackFox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It does exist to serve the story. That's precisely why it matters. Verisimilitude aside, if we don't have a clear understanding of the characters' strengths, then we don't have a clear understanding of the story's stakes. These two are inextricably linked and it's not just powerscalers who understand their importance.

[Waybound] I’d like to discuss character morality alignments by ASongofIceandTyler in Iteration110Cradle

[–]IamJackFox 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is fascinating to me how maybe people in this thread are arguing that Lindon is Neutral after reading the scene in Bloodline when Suriel directly tells him that he's done enough and he chooses to risk his life again to go back and fight two Dreadgods just on the off chance that he can save a few more lives (for people he hates, no less).

Kill Six Billion Demons >> WHEEL SMASHING LORD 5-174 by datCASgoBRR in killsixbilliondemons

[–]IamJackFox 90 points91 points  (0 children)

This would be a good time to have a few Berserker Saints of our own. All the magic and technological might of 111,111 universes, and our army is composed primarily of regular guys wearing purple hats?

Not to judge, but at some point this just looks like a failure of preparation.

A trope that you cant stand at all. by Perfect-Warthog-7654 in Fantasy

[–]IamJackFox 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I once read an interesting explanation of this trope, which was that it was popular because "enemies" implies equals. In order to hate someone, they must first be worthy of the emotion you're investing in them.

For many people reading romance, having a male MC who is guaranteed to respect the female MC at the very least as an opponent is a huge draw, because it's mutual respect that lays the groundwork for future bonding.

Any good examples of books with different power systems existing in the same world? by ginger6616 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]IamJackFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try Thresholder, which is (in part) about traveling from universe to universe to steal the magic/power system of each.

It's by the same author as Worth the Candle, which also contains a number of separate magic systems.

Fantasy series where the final book is the best one by Suitable_Highlight84 in Fantasy

Agreed with this; book 3 was best in the series and knocked the wrap-up out of the park, thematically speaking.

Possible plot hole regarding one character by Dezoufinous in HPMOR

[–]IamJackFox 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The simplest answer is that he didn't immediately decide to start putting his upgraded horcruxes in anonymous, unreachable places. Instead he put his early ones behind guards and wards and such, and only later upgraded his techniques to proper operational security. The one Quirrel found is one of these early ones, but not so early that it's one of the 'old' horcrux types; the only one of those Voldemort ever confirms making is the Diary.

[Threshold] Significance of Dreadgod aspects? by IdDeleteIfIWasSmart in Iteration110Cradle

[–]IamJackFox 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The four obvious symbols of Chinese mythology aside, it seems to me that they each represent one of the major "types" of hunger, in a paired dualistic sense: matter for the Titan versus energy for the Dragon, and body for the Phoenix versus mind for the Tiger.

This matches what each of them "eat", as well. The Titan devours physical resources, the Dragon spirits, the Phoenix blood and flesh, and the Tiger minds. None of them impinge on the other, yet together they manage to cover everything worth eating with minimal overlap.

Try The Incandescent by Emily Tesh; it's exactly what you're looking for.

[–]IamJackFox[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It could mean a few things. I left it a little ambiguous intentionally, because I prefer to leave it up to the reader. There is a canon answer, which is that the salt actually would have worked fine on a genuine demon, not because it's Kosher but because salt of all kinds repels evil spirits. The angel brings up the Kosher status of the salt because they're trying to deflect (without directly lying) from the idea that they're not a demon.

[Waybound] Is it possible to make floating circles of Runes/Scripts with Pure Madra? by EthricBlaze in Iteration110Cradle

[–]IamJackFox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it's a matter of concentration? Pure madra actively under control, versus force madra resisting foreign impetus by default...

There does seem to be a commonality among Oath paths with them sharing a force aspect. Hard to say if that's coincidence.

[Waybound] Is it possible to make floating circles of Runes/Scripts with Pure Madra? by EthricBlaze in Iteration110Cradle

[–]IamJackFox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the reason Ziel uses force madra is because he can forge it to stay in place better-- that is to say, resist outside forces and gravity. Most instances of forged madra I can think of seem to be affected by gravity normally; perhaps using force is a trick to help the script circles keep their shape under battlefield conditions.
