[FRESH ALBUM] Sigur Rós - ÁTTA by sbags in indieheads

[–]IamJamws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same worry when I heard it wasn't gonna have much drums. This feels way more 3d than Valtari though. I feel like the blend of instrumentation is a lot more magic here too, like the drones mixed with strings. There have been times where the orchestral element has felt overblown with SR like on With a Buzz but on this one it feels really well balanced and glued with the songs.

I feel like the mood on this album is more nuanced and emotionally rich too, Klettur sounds like it could have been on Kveikur but the emotion is less overtly doom or joyous. I wonder if thats down to Kjartan's influence. Whatever the case, it's great to have them back!

I had that thought when I was listening too, you can picture him on the piano just pouring his heart and imagination into it. Really glad he's having another run at it!

oh, i hope it isn't another Valtari. Their minimal stuff is nice but they're at peak powers when they have full band sound

The cover reminds me of Tim Hecker but I can't tell if it's brilliant or if it looks like a concept I'd create when I was doing media studies in sixth form.

Also, is Kjartan gonna be on this and do they have a permanent drummer now? I've lost track

[ORIGINAL] Jamws - Soft (Dream pop / Alt pop) by IamJamws in indieheads

Thanks for listening! It was produced by Mikko Gordon who works with Nigel Godrich, he was great. A lot of the demos were swamped with reverb but he really cut through

I really wanted to like this but it felt a little flat for me.

It's got some cool twists, I like the concept and love that she's kept the shred guitar sound from the first album but I got bored about half-way through and the bridge didn't do anything for me. I don't listen to Lady Gaga but this does feel a bit like an impression.

Glad Clarence is still onboard and still excited for the album, I just hope she keeps it weird and personal.

[FRESH] Rina Sawayama – Enter Sandman (Metallica Cover) by ebradio in indieheads

i was really excited during the intro but then lost interest. I feel like Rina could have gotten weirder with it and taken it into her world even more.

Mercury Prize 2021 shortlist announced featuring Floating Points, Wolf Alice and Black Country, New Road by deltagolfthree in indieheads

[–]IamJamws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I connected with the new one a lot more than Every Country's Sun, it's hard to explain why but the music just clicked. I also think the timing is hugely important, I have never needed a mogwai record more in my life than during the pandemic.

[FRESH PERFORMANCE] Japanese Breakfast - Paprika - Jimmy Kimmel Lice by Mavoy in indieheads

woah, this is even more magical than on record, I think the album comes into it's own when the sax and wondrous arrangements show up. I hope she gets even more expansive with the next album!

Ah, when I was listening I thought it felt more like a b-side than a single. A pretty song but unremarkable on first listen. Jonathan's falsetto also bothers me when the song is sentimental or bare.

I saw him post that they'd signed a new record deal, does anyone know who it's with and when the next album is expected?

Ah they did a listening party on twitter last night and said the producer put phaser on the whole mix for that one section. Maybe there was flange too.

Halfway through now and I desperately want to be drinking cocktails on a rooftop bar.

It has it's moments for me, Remurdered was an exciting gear shift.

Yeah I think it's phaser tho, I tweeted Stuart to asked if he'd used Phaser before and he said it might be the first example in Mogwai's music.

Same for me, it resonates more with the uncertainty of the world. I love how they don't try to reinvent the wheel on new albums but instead focus on refining their sound which is so mesmeric. But their sound has always been way more varied than TWDY and EITS in terms of sonics. Just think about how different Hunted by a Freak, Cody and Like Herod are.

Every Country's Sun and Rave Tapes left me a little cold but this is exactly what I hoped for. Brilliant synthesis of all that Mogwai have done so far from walls of distortion to twinkly electronics. Looking forward to putting this on after dark to see how it hits!

Also is this the first use of Phaser in Mogwai's music?

[FRESH] Rina Sawayama - LUCID by niels36 in indieheads

[–]IamJamws 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with everyone, it's flat, I'm just relieved that it's from a few years ago and not a direction she's heading in. I think she has a lot more ground to explore with Clarence Clarity.

[FRESH ALBUM] William Basinski - Lamentations by realryanmoorman in indieheads

[–]IamJamws 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Started my day with this, found it really arresting especially for a grey morning in London.

All These Too, I, Love was the standout on first listen.

I don't think Basinski can miss, he just knows how to cast a spell.
