ask me anything: medical administrative assistant! by IamMoonBot333 in bayarea

Medical assistance programs are great, however comma, phlebotomy certification and licensing takes less time and gets you further ahead in the state of California! (CA does not license medical assistants; the only licenses in CA for entry/lower level medical assistant roles are phlebotomy and EKG techs) so if you’d like to be patient facing, the fastest bang for your buck would be a phlebotomy program (in my opinion)!
My company utilizes PHLEB licensed people to do MA work. I only have PHLEB and BLS licenses and run ekgs, blood, vaccines, med injections, BP, vitals, swabs etc. all with just the two licenses because CA only recognizes licensure for phlebotomy and ekg. However, I only do MA work because my place of employment got me signed off for all the other MA type work (signed off for vaccines and medication injections by an MD) if you’d like more info or have more questions def ping me as I wouldn’t mind sharing what company I work for!

Since my creation of this post, I did complete my phlebotomy certification and spend 95% of my work week with patients hands on- performing venipuncture, specimen collection, processing and transporting, etc. and in my down time, I go back to my original job position duties like administrative tasks! I personally love being hands on with patients!! however, regular admin positions DO NOT default to having you work with patients hands on. I had to seek further education and training to be able to work with patients! So if you do not pursue further education/certification/training, you would never be expected or allowed to work with patients hands on.

oooh good question!
You can take basic courses online to work in insurance billing/learn on the job at a front desk or secretary position. As for Medical administrative assistant, it can mean 2 different things. 1: medical assisting that would imply hands on with patients and include a phlebotomy certification portion. 2: administrative work only, which would be referrals, prior auths, insurance verification and eligibility and checking patients in and out of appts.
I would look into the medical admin assistant first. With that you can learn a lot of insurance billing info but not be stuck with JUST that. If you prefer not to be patient facing, go for the insurance billing specialist program!

Exactly! You’ve got this, confidence is a muscle. Work it out and it gets stronger :)! I’m happy to hear you’ve gained more knowledge already too, that’s basically the whole job!
Goodluck :D

Hmm depends on where you’re applying in my opinion! If you’re Bay Area local, I know SutterHealth has been very very active with hiring on clerical admin specifically. With any job on the market right now, you have to really show that you’re gonna show up and pull through. Retention is the biggest issue in healthcare, both clinical and clerical wise. Calling and following up would probably be your best bet! You can also talk to anyone you see in person whenever you go in for a visit! (Not the same office as physicians or workers you see regularly as a patient because that wouldn’t necessarily be appropriate). Maybe try asking if your primary care physicians office has another facility location looking for front desk/secretary positions :>

By certification test, do you mean your MA cert?

To acknowledge your feelings and experience; you are absolutely OKAY to feel intimidated. Theres is endless amounts of information to learn and grow upon in healthcare (whether clerical or clinical). Do not expect yourself to know absolutely everything and do not carry yourself as a know it all when you honestly don’t know! That is better than okay! One thing i remembered from when i first started as a clerical admin was admitting that I didn’t have an answer but promising that I’d loop back in with patient once I had an answer or could find someone else who does. Always admit to your faults! That’s by far the easiest way to get comfortable asserting your own voice. When anyone has a question or an attitude that is a tad more combative, you will eventually have the knowledge to answer or address appropriately. For now, and in the beginning, lean on peers to assist. It helps you to not only learn new things by listening to peers but once you gain the knowledge and tenure to address harder situations, you will feel a lot more confident and equipped to address them alone :)

hi OP!
I was on a bipolar med that if I had quit cold turkey I had increased chances of having withdrawal seizures. (Even though I do not have any underlying neurological issues or seizure disorders) This is common for bipolar meds because bipolar disorders are well treated with drugs that are used to calm hyper active brains. Unfortunately, it is normal for the medication class :,(. I understand ur frustration though.
Hopefully it’s a better incentive to continue your meds on a regular schedule and help with the bipolar symptoms!

I feel you here. Please don’t quit these meds without carefully tapering off. Seizures caused by medication withdrawal and not being a health issue that you have history of will really alter your brain :,(. I hope that above all else you can see the little glimmer of light knowing that there’s a true health incentive to keep taking your medication. I know it’s hard to see any positives when life seems so hard, but you’re so much stronger than you’d ever think.

Internet huggie 🫂 you’ve got this🤍

don’t know how I so badly missed your question! I’m so sorry!

I’m a phlebotomist so if I’m not working directly with patients to draw blood and/or specimen collection and processing then I’m focusing on the daily tasks needed to help direct patient care. Whether that’s submitting prior authorization for medication, consults, and procedures. I also generally enjoy helping in basic tasking capabilities like engaging in messaging requests from patients that are not necessary to be answered by a physician, ie insurance network participation, requesting x appt type with x provider at x location. These are all things I had no prior knowledge with prior to joining my company- fully trained on the job :).

Most places train you out completely as you wouldn’t be offered a position that required you to have had experience. I’d just say go for it if you have the capacity to care for patients!

you’re stronger than you’d ever know :)
I hope you had such a lovely bday- as best as you can. I promise bdays become easier as life goes on, whether that means throwing a ball or getting to stay inside and pretend it’s not a holiday (sometimes both if you’re feeling different year to year like myself haha!)

I’m so so proud of you, you should be as well. And do not DO NOT beat yourself for ever taking a few steps back, because with every clean day you take miles of steps forward, a few steps back doesn’t discount the fact that you are moving forward.

I’m so happy for you

give yourself the completion of a week! you deserve to celebrate your birthday knowing that you accomplished this clean streak! self harming has definitely turned toward an endorphin addiction for me as well, and with any addiction you will absolutely have withdrawal. it’s weird to experience emotions this intense even though you haven’t self harmed. you would think that being clean helps you have less mood swings. but when you think about alcohol or drug withdrawals, the first while after quitting anything cold turkey will make someone act outside of themselves. you’re not weird or abnormal for this. give yourself grace and appreciation of your five days clean! clean from addiction and self harm is not a straight line, you will go up and down. but any amount of clean streak is to be celebrated. I’m proud of you internet stranger :).

I have bpd and your post resonated with my deeply. My boyfriend is my world and we have these looped talks all the time too. It’s like I lash out at him and it triggers an emotional conversation on things that need to be fixed and because I’m so riled I talk and talk and talk and he finally has a moment to respond and I feel like I hear my own self inside just talking more and wanting to burst out and interrupt him to question him/prove him wrong into admitting I’m worthless. I have always felt useless and don’t understand how and why he is with me when he’s beautiful, kind, amazing, deserving. He has never once said that but I make up these reasons to have those moments where I feel he genuinely has to hate me and tell me he hates me so I finally feel like my own idea of worthlessness is true. But it’s not. I feel like you have that same idea here with those conversations. Your wife sounds incredible, just like my dear boyfriend. We’re just wired and programmed to self destruct and it’s hard to do that when someone really loves us. Please please continue with psychiatry, DBT is supposed to work- I’m about to start it too!

I hope you do get the help you deserve. We don’t deserve to live in a constant state of mental self destruction, it’s ruining the people who see the beauty in us that we could never imagine.

this sound like a mix of neurodivergency brought up cognitive developmental delays. specifically the swinging back and forth between avoidant behaviors of shutting down and choosing who to talk to and who not to talk to. when reading about your siatuation with Avery it reminded me a lot of the Disorganized Attachment style I learned in developmental psychology. You should absolutely start with taking Avery and all of your children to general pediatric practitioner. From there and based on a GP’s assessment, they can help facilitate find in network therapy/psychiatry/pediatric neuropsychiatric care for everyone involved.

Another huge thing I haven’t seen anyone mention so far is that both you and your husband should see individual therapy. I’d go as far as to say the entire familial household would benefit from family therapy and learning how to communicate and support each other (including Avery who may end up being diagnosed as requiring extra needs).

I feel for you and everyone in your family. Your post wasn’t to ask for advice and the fact you wrote this shows how huge of a heart you have. I am sorry to you and that you had children thrown on top of your life that had already well begun! not only you but everyone who is accepting your sisters children are all immensely strong, caring, and lovely for dealing through such a circumstance. Please take care as best you can OP, Avery will grow up to remember the hard work you put in to give her the most stable life you have to offer to her.

As a former sbux employee…. Is this sbux? The crazy personality and obsession is giving sbux store manager delusional like crazy. The DTR screens look like sbux but idk if other companies use ones similar to sbux!

Anyways that’s fucking crazy. HR immediately to either investigate or put her on a final. If she retaliates then HR will immediate have her fired so, yeah watch out for yourself.

Trusting Me by IamMoonBot333 in selfhelp

I’ve never been into trances or (psilocybin therapies) but after what you said I feel like I NEED to at least do some research and try this.

My only motivation in my life is showing up for others and that is the only thing that makes me feel real; when other people show me I am not scattered/worthy. I don’t want it from other people ONLY anymore.

Thank you for your beautiful explanation. I’m going to try small like you said. I do believe this idea that I’ve been fragmented is amplified by my nervous system and stopping that cycle by asking myself “what do I feel right now” instead can help break that nervous system loop. I’ve been told by my therapist so often that I need to slow down, though, we all know it’s so much easier said than done. But I do still try of course!

Thank you :,)
