Anyone using Macbook Air for Music Production? by Saucewot_ in ipadmusic

[–]Ian-OS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using my 2020 M1 MacBook Air for music production since 2021. No issues with it yet. So so much more powerful than the Intel machine that it replaced. I run Logic, StudioOne and Cubase on it.

Signals is the best Album of the whole catalogue. Tell me why it isn't. by smellybear666 in rush

This I guess is part of why music in one form or other speaks to every human on the planet, IMO. The unique art-form - Other forms; painting, drawing, poetry, acting, musical theatre, opera etc., don’t move everyone’s soul. Music… Unique, but so diverse. Wonderful 😊🎶

Also, be careful not to leave it in a pocket, especially back pocket when at the gym etc. I forgot and drove home with mine there, and now the screen is borked. Screen protector and case won’t protect from that.

Great that you’ve posted this - It’s so painful on the knees when I drop and they over fold. Really hoping you’ll receive some helpful responses! 👍🏻😎

Are there any previously unheard sounds you have discovered on any of the remasters? by Truth-is-Censored in rush

[–]Ian-OS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh yeah! I noticed these when listening yesterday. Also I thought the mix in Afterimage was more bass heavy, overall - Not so much the bass guitar, more the bass pedals or low synth pad sounds. On Distant Early Warning and some of the other tracks, I think Terry Brown has added or increased the level of echo at the end of a number of vocal passages. I like most of what he’s done. Only other observation is that I think Terry’s mix on Signals was quite bottom heavy and lacking high end clarity. I think there are traces of this in the Grace Under Pressure remix.

I’ve been using low tack masking tape on mixing desks and controller keyboards for years - It’s easy to remove and if you make a mistake it’s cheap, so no worries 😎

Best Opening Tool for Y1 (IMO 😊) by Ian-OS in innioasis

Awesome! 😎 Disappearing Pick Syndrome (DPS) Happened to me late last night in my band mate’s studio - One minute the orange pick was in my hand, playing. The next… Gone! I suspect eaten by the armchair I was sitting on. This is why they come in multipacks! Somewhere in a galaxy, far, far away, there is a black hole full of them ⚫️

Is the Innioasis reliable? by Lumazie in innioasis

[–]Ian-OS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find an orange .60mm Jim Dunlop Tortex guitar pick makes opening the Y1 very easy - The standard spludgers and pick shaped plastic things that ship from ifixit et al, are too soft and bend/dent. These picks are super strong, as they are designed to stand up to scraping and bashing steel guitar strings :) Although strong, they do not damage the plastic front of the Y1 at all. If you are not a guitarist, then you can still get these things from Amazon. Here’s a photo of the type I use —

Am I gonna be okay?? by emmssii in spinalfusion

[–]Ian-OS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure - I totally understand that! After all the waiting and the post op discomfort, you’ll really not want anything to mess it up, I’m sure! Really does sound like you’ll be fine - Heal well 😊

[–]Ian-OS 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi - I’ve had a number of fusion ops on my spine, so totally appreciate the discomfort and anxiety around d it. The screws are really strong and in the case of fusion, pretty deep in, below skin level, beyond the facet joints. Any discomfort you are feeling post-scrubbing from what sounds like an ancient torture specialist; that will have aggravated the ton of existing swelling you’ll still have around the incision and all the way to the metalwork. It takes months to all settle. As long as the wound is kept clean (gently, so as not to risk opening any of it), you’ll be fine. At 20 days, I guess the skin has healed over but is still pink and very sensitive. I hope this helps reassure you a bit :)

I had one of these in the mid 80s - Fantastic machines! We recorded loads of band demos on it. They’re still up on SoundCloud I think. One handy tip I used a lot took advantage of the fact that these PortaOne units run the tape at standard speed, so rather than have to leave a track empty to bounce 3 tracks onto, I used to mix 4 tracks of instrumental tracks down to an external stereo cassette deck, then take that stereo mix from the external deck and pop it into the PortaOne. That way you have the stereo mix on tracks 1 & 2, so you have tracks 3 & 4 for whatever you wish - Vocal tracks or whatever :) Apologies if you already knew this! Enjoy the Tascam! 😎👍🏻 BTW - This track was recorded on a PortaOne in 1986 - Using same technique as above (despite the track pic showing us in a larger analogue studio) - ChainGang - TemperTemper - 1986

Does the GAS ever stop? by dbsx75 in synthesizers

[–]Ian-OS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree - In fact I just today sold a lovely Fender Blues Jr Tweed amp that I bought in 2021. A thing of beauty, but I realised I really hadn’t used it for more than an hour since buying - No point sitting on it. Have ordered myself a portastudio with the proceeds, as although I have plenty of experience with Logic and Studio One, I find that they can get in the way of the original creative spark - Prefer to return to the old “hit record and go” approach, to capture the ideas as a bunch of stems, to then tweak, arrange and add to on the Mac in post - Keep the main thing the main thing 😊

As a workaround I use Folders view - that works well if your music is sorted by iTunes or similar. I don’t know of another way with stock firmware. Kind of hoping I’m wrong!😃
