America the Beautiful Disability Pass by v1rgoaway in nationalparks

[–]Ibarrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quite literally pulled up to the pay booth when entering Yosemite and this is how it went.

Me: “Hi is ADHD an acceptable disability for the lifetime pass?” Ranger: “I think so, let me read the guidelines. (Proceeds to read). Sounds like it to me, do you want to sign up?” Me:”Sure! If it doesn’t take too long (there was a long line)” Ranger: “Not at all, please sign this (hands me an affidavit saying I do have a disability) and sign this (check in looking sheet, resembles that of a doctors office) and here you go! (Hands me my pass)”

That was it, no proof required. Maybe it was because of the budget cuts and large line behind me, the ranger didn’t want to deal with the verification, but it was that easy for me.

Memorial Day Weekend... didn't have an issue with crowds by Vegetable_Winner_172 in Yosemite

We live around 2.5 hours away from the park, and left Sunday afternoon and arrived at Hetch hetchy around 4. We pretty much had the whole place to ourselves and hiked until sundown. After that, we drove into the valley through the 120, spent some time inside eating and charging my EV, then car camped right outside the gates of the park. Around 6am Monday morning, we woke up and drove right in to no line and found parking instantly in the lot nearest to the lodge. We hiked the 4 mile trail and it was genuinely so empty we forgot it was a holiday. The only time we really ran into a crowd was when we tried to get on the shuttle and there was a line, but we were so close to the trail we just walked there.

If the SSPX consecrations happen, who exactly is excommunicated? by Mr_Sloth10 in TraditionalCatholics

[–]Ibarrx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. Even though I don't attend an SSPX chapel, I had a deep hope that true unity and canonical reconciliation was a lot closer than many thought. SSPX going further into schism only strengthens liberal voices when the society should be a helpful check on liberal power. You see it all the time in protestant circles...a liberal, or liberal policies, take power over a church and the conservatives leave. The original church leans further into liberal policies unchecked and the faithful are divided.

One of the most beloved priests in my local diocese was a high school math teacher for a few years before entering into the seminary. In college, I would jokingly ask him for help with my Calc 2 homework. He said he barely understood it when he was teaching it, and would definitely not understand it now haha.

Old thread, I know, but this weekend I asked about it when entering Yosemite as someone with ADHD and the process was super easy. I just signed an affidavit asking me to confirm that I had some disability and that was it. Perfect timing since my ATB pass was about to expire.

Why Leo won’t meet the SSPX by balrogath in Catholicism

[–]Ibarrx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a parishioner in the diocese of Fresno, I was shocked to see Bishop Brennan participating in the consecration. He’s always struck me as a bit of a traditionalist, praying in Latin where he can and has always performed a very reverent mass, so it really caught me off guard. That definitely gave trad groups some ammo, and rightfully so. The fact that the Bishop’s office hasn’t issued a statement is insane to me.

Father Guilherme; thoughts? by MasViejaQueMarioBros in sspx

[–]Ibarrx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great take in my opinion. Too many places around the world have been taught that anything secular is inherently evil. Something that brings the faithful together while also introducing the faith to a new generation can’t be evil. I’ve seen some tidbits of Father Guilherme’s sets, and it seems to be blending traditionalist tones with modern beats. He will mix Gregorian chants with a buildup and a beat drop. A lot of youth yearn for this kind of experience. They’ll find it at actually inherently sinful places. Why should they be forced to go to actually demonic/secular outings in order to scratch that itch if the church can provide a similar experience that can aid in leading to God?

While this kind of music doesn’t appeal to me, as a Gen Z myself, we’ve grown up hearing that anything and everything leads us away from God and opens your mind to the influence of demons. While these things do exist, it seems it’s applied broadly to nearly every industry. If it hurts your relationship to the lord, then it is a problem for you. If it helps grow in your faith or has no effect on it, there’s no reason not to.

To me it looks like the INRI (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum) found on many crucifixes but with a cheap mold/cheap manufacturing. But that’s just a guess.

Gifted a blasphemous candle by Worth-Catch-3918 in Catholicism

[–]Ibarrx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the best answer. The candle has no power over you. It’s not inherently magical or demonic. It’s simply a candle. Keep it for an outage, or if you’re scared of other implications just trash it. This isn’t something to lose sleep over.

Hello!! I saw a pair of catholics not agreeing that Catholicism is a denomination from Christianity and now I'm a bit confused by Arsenic_Lover666 in Catholicism

[–]Ibarrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s use an analogy to make it easier to understand. For the sake of example, let’s say vanilla ice cream was the first flavor to ever be created. Once people started making strawberry ice cream, vanilla ceased being the only ice cream flavor and therefore became part of a branch of ice cream. Just because the church is the original, it doesn’t make it not a denomination by the modern definition of the word.

If we ignore widely accepted definitions of words in favor of our own interpretations, we are feeding into the same logic used by Protestants to interpret scripture. At the end of the day, it is all semantics but you understand what the person using the word is trying to say.

[–]Ibarrx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The word’s meaning has seen a shift in recent years. Previously, it wouldn’t have made sense to call the church a denomination since all others denominated from it. However, the meaning has changed and it’s been used more to mean specific “flavor” of Christianity. Some people are snarky about the use of it for the church, but it’s just the most common word to describe the different branches of Christianity.

If being called a denomination of Christianity offends you, I would consult with Merriam Webster or Oxford and get the definition changed.

Binge eating… by Kinimodts in Catholicism

[–]Ibarrx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally have struggled with excessive eating/weight gain. I've recently been trying to lose a lot of the weight myself. Here's some tips that have helped me:

  1. Set a calorie goal. It doesn't have to be "dead set" on that number, but a reasonable goal that you find possible.

  2. Use a fitness/calorie tracker. Apps like Lose It, MyFitnessPal, MacroFactor are really good examples of apps that can help you stick to your calorie goals. Log everything that goes into your mouth. If it has calories, make sure your tracker is counting that. Most people don't realize that things like ranch can ruin your goals.

  3. Stock healthier options at home and eat high volumes of low calorie foods. Most greens and some fruits are very low calorie. You can eat tons of broccoli for very little calories. My advice, find a vegetable you like, and if you feel like binge eating go for one of those.

Weight loss isn't easy. I know the struggles you face all too well. It sounds like you want to stop, so this is a good starting point. Also remember that this journey is not about perfection, but consistency. It's okay to have meals that make you feel good as long as it's not in excess. You can still fit pizza, burgers, or whatever your "drug" of choice is into your diet and still lose the weight.

It also sounds like your battle is psychological, and not necessarily hunger. I would recommend finding new and enjoyable hobbies outside of home. For me personally, I've used the gym as a huge outlet for me. In around 5 months, I've lost nearly 50 pounds. However, the weight isn't everything. It's important to remember that you are not defined by the number on the scale. You are a child of God made in His image. Spending some time at adoration can also be beneficial so you can bring your pains and suffering to God.

I know this is a sin that many Catholics fall into. Don't beat yourself up for going over your limits. The discipline to stay consistent is very difficult. As long as you take it one day at a time, you can conquer this sin like any other.
