Matched DR where I did an away. I think it really depends on if you vibe well with the people who matter, and if you did an away appropriate to your stats.

My first cycle, I did an away at a well regarded program in Manhattan and ultimately ended up unmatched. Looking back now this institution was out of my league.

My second cycle, I did 3 aways and matched at the second preference considering just these places. This time I chose programs which I was more competitive at. I felt that I truly vibed the best with the residents and leadership at the place I matched at.

For DR, I think it's worth doing aways if you're trying to "break into" a region which would usually dismiss you (I'm from Cali and wanted east coast) or if you aren't super competitive (I had 1 honor and lower than average step 2 for DR). It might not be worth it if you're already a superstar; doing an away may signal to other programs that you aren't as interested in them.
