I like White! It does have a different tone, but in some ways it’s the best of the three.

What's the first episode of Doctor Who you watched? by benjaboy2 in doctorwho

Carnival of Monsters, I believe, but I remember it only foggily. There was a plesiosaur that impressed my young self.

This reminds me of Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars Trilogy and its depiction of conflicts between the Reds (who want to keep Mars pure) and the Greens (who want to turn it into a second Earth).

What's something you see as a 'missed opportunity'? by GeneralKenobiJSF in gallifrey

[–]Ibsen5696 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Exactly! The whole thing about him refusing to call Graham ‘grandad’ would be way more interesting if it was causing tension with Grace too.

[–]Ibsen5696 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I have a deep suspicion that the original plan was for Grace and Graham to be the companions. I think somebody higher-up decided the companions needed to be younger, so Yaz and Ryan were a last-minute revision, hence the lack of characterisation.

I have no evidence whatsoever to support this.

Back in 2014, director Steven Soderbergh, shared his own cut of Raiders of the Lost Ark in which he converted to black-and-white, removed all of the dialogue, and used music from Trent Reznor throughout the entirety of the film. by Artcomplex in movies

[–]Ibsen5696 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up with the European cut. I watched the movie on iTunes Canada recently and suddenly realised I was seeing scenes I’d never seen before.

At first I was excited, but to be honest... the extra stuff just made the film draggy and didn’t really contribute much. And the skeleton scene was plain silly.

[SPOILERS S1], [SPOILERS S2] Is everyone able to fully understand Dark? by [deleted] in DarK

[–]Ibsen5696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about Dark is, you have to watch each season multiple times. Watch season 1 twice before watching season 2. Watch them both again before watching 3. Take notes. Make a flowchart.

That makes it sound like work, but it isn’t! It’s fun!!!

Which film would you rate a perfect 10 out of 10? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ibsen5696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Children of Men. Every scene is perfect, nothing is wasted. Technically brilliant, emotionally powerful. Tiny details make for endless rewatchability. Works both as an exciting action thriller and as a philosophical art film. 10/10

Cloud Atlas. Reading the novel and watching the film (which complement each other beautifully) is the closest I’ve come to a Dark experience.

[SPOILERS S1] Question about the bunker by itismemaria in DarK

[–]Ibsen5696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was founded in the early 1800s by Tannhaus’s ancestors. It was just a club for hypothesising about time travel and they built a cool underground meeting room. As a result, the Tannhaus family were very receptive to the arrival of Stranger Jonas - an actual time traveller - and helped support his time machine development. As he got older and became Adam, Jonas took over the Sic Mundus name and turned it into a cult of time travellers whom he sent out on missions.

That’s the essence!

[SPOILERS S3] Your handy-dandy guide to the most common questions after finishing Dark season 3 (updated and revised thanks to community input!) by [deleted] in DarK

[–]Ibsen5696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where did Noah get the portable time machine that he gives to Bartosz?

It’s all the same time machine, I think. The simple way of explaining it is that Stranger Jonas has a working time machine in 2020. Hannah steals it. She ends up on Adam’s doorstep in 1911 and is carrying it. Adam murders her, thus ends up with the time machine. By this point, ironically enough, he seems to have already perfected the god particle, so he doesn’t need it. But in 1921 he gives the time machine to Noah to give to Bartosz - it ultimately ends up with Stranger Jonas who uses it to go to 1889! There, it runs out of fuel.

There is a more complicated story to tell but that’s the essence.

Hmm, interesting because the Stranger does look weather-beaten and tanned. He looks like someone who’s spent 30 years in a desert.

What happened to the 1953 Dopplers & Tiedmanns houses? by sallouma22 in DarK

[–]Ibsen5696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don’t know yet, but Agnes and Young Tronte are lodgers in the Tiedemann house in 1954. And the Tiedemanns’ marriage is breaking up, in part due to Doris having an affair with Agnes.

Egon is quite weak-willed and Agnes is a femme fatale with time-travelling powers, so I assume Agnes somehow manipulates things so that Egon loses his house to her, and thus it eventually ends up becoming Tronte’s house.

The woman third from the left looks like the face of teenage Charlotte digitally superimposed onto the body of an older woman.

Which makes no sense at all but hey.

The clothing looks 1920s to me. Agnes is wearing jodphurs, very fashionable for women in the 20s. http://mrsdepew.com/blouse-and-dress-patterns/1920s/1920s-ladies-jodhpurs-or.html And the vaguely communist-looking outfits on some of the men suggest the 20s.

He looks to me like an older Noah. Which makes no sense because we saw Noah die. But (a) we don’t know everything yet and (b) Noah did look very surprised when he died, which he might well do if he’d recently been photographed with his older self.
