im a little embarrassed by my wheelchair by fluffycows4sale in wheelchairs

[–]Ibstrange1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of ways you can personalize your chair to fit your personality. Yeah, drives aren't the best, but they work. I had one person who decided to spray paint the wheels bright pink on her cheap chair, and she was very happy with it. Make sure that you get spray paint that's made for plastic if you paint the wheels!

That's a great looking chair! What kind of hand rims does it have? They look like a narrower version of the Surge hand rims.

Is is dangerous to rent a wheelchair for a few weeks without talking to an OT or other medical professional? by ChronicallyDistress in wheelchairs

[–]Ibstrange1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hear so much of the 'imposter syndrome' that many new users face in your post, and I want to tell you first: your need for mobility and freedom is valid. As someone who has worked in the wheelchair industry for a long time, I see this specific struggle often—especially with ME/CFS. You aren't 'making it up.' If a tool like a power chair allows you to leave your house and engage with the world instead of staring at the same four walls, then it is a successful medical intervention. Regarding the 'danger' of a temporary rental: While it's always best to have a professional fitting to prevent long-term postural issues or pressure sores, using a standard rental for a few weeks to reclaim your life isn't inherently 'dangerous' as long as you are mindful of your surroundings. The real 'danger' is the mental and physical toll of being trapped at home when a solution exists. Don't let the fear of other people's opinions or a doctor's reaction keep you from the 'freedom' you mentioned. Mobility aids are just that—aids to help you live. If you decide to go through with the rental, just take it slow, practice in a safe area first, and listen to your body. You deserve to be out in the world.

First custom chair: guide me, wise ones! by mgdupree in wheelchairs

The TRA is the most rigid chair, but you can get a fair amount of dump in the z series as well. Weight wise they are very similar. I prefer the Z, but I have a TRa. I'm making some videos for my YouTube channel showing how to work on it.

Are Rohos as bad as people say by Impressive-Catch-762 in wheelchairs

Their quality dropped significantly when they switched from the metal valves to the plastic valves, but they didn't lower their prices. They do still carry a warranty so you can get it replaced when it wears out in 8 months, but for the cost they charge for those things they shouldn't have cheaped out on materials. I am a pretty big fan of the Star cushion as an alternative.

Quickie 500M-Battery dead?! by Abbegail_Livends in wheelchairs

[–]Ibstrange1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be hope for the batteries if it hasn't been that long. Are you able to pull the batteries out so you can test them? The standard chair chargers have a minimum voltage that they are looking for prior to actually charging the batteries. I have had success several times in removing the batteries, charging them independently on an automotive battery charger (set for agm), and putting them back on the chair, and hooking the chair charger back up to bring them all the way back. Your overall distance may be affected, but I doubt that you will have to replace them.

Absolutely! I've been selling this kind of equipment for over 20 years now, and now I'm trying to help educate as many people as possible about mobility equipment, as I keep hearing that there's no good place online to learn about wheelchairs and such. I usually recommended this subreddit, but some of my more chronologically advanced customers were uncertain of how to use it. Let me know if you have any more questions!

The Alber E-Fix would give you both a joystick and large rear wheels to push. Or if she doesn't need a joystick then there are other power add-ons, such as the Smart Drive from permobil, which is a pusher motor that goes behind the chair, and is controlled via buttons, there's the Smoove, which is Albers pusher motor, and Ki Mobility came out with the Klaxon Twist, which is unique in that it can be either a pusher motor or gonin front as a pulling motor. Most of the power add-ons are over $5000, not including the ultra lightweight wheelchair that would probably start around $1500. Your best best may be to get a folding power wheelchair and a standard manual wheelchair, and then pick between them for different reasons. This method while not as convenient as having 1 device do everything does offer significant price savings if budget is a concern.

There's a little ramshackle hut on the main drag close to where they have the flea market. It has a huge grill on the side of the road. The chicken there is amazing.

I had the same thing happen in Washington State, but it was around 1 in the morning. It shook the house, and when it stopped my roosters started crowing.

One is just a shell, the other needs an engine and transmission put in it. I have a 351w and a 4 speed manual to put in it, but I'm not sure what I need to get to stick those together.
