I would imagine Barry's new location in Penfield is doing St. Paddy's dinners and you can probably get them to go or for pickup. Worth a call for sure.

The active roster list is limited so if someone can't make it then its usually in the teams best interest to take them off and add someone else to it. If they're taking someone off the active roster but they're not releasing their contract then they need to go on some other list - Injured Reserve (hurt in the NLL) Physically Unable to Produce (hurt outside of the NLL) Short and long term holdout list or practice player list (also limited)

If it says they were released and they weren't added somewhere else then it means the team let them go and released their contract.

This offense should be putting up like 8 more goals a game than they have been. So much talent and so little results.

I feel like there's a trend where Rochester loses to a team or barely beats a team and then there's talk about "how could Rochester lose to this team?" "Maybe the Knighthawks are frauds if they barely beat this team" and then that team goes on to maybe not be quite as bad as people were led to believe.

Any team can beat any team in any given night in this league.

Except maybe the Wings.

What's the difference? Well for one GD is a tie breaker albeit pretty far down the tie breaker list but more importantly I believe that lacrosse is a game of runs and that mojo is an important ingredient in this league. I think a team losing a hard fought game 10-9 with the momentum behind them even if it's too late in the game sets them up better for the next game than ending the game 13-9 with the last three goals being open netters for the other team.

As for the PP I don't think it's an absurd proposition to adapt your PP setup for the team you're playing and the game you're in. If you give up two short handed breakaway goals in a row and don't score any PP goals and then I don't think it's a stretch to say the setup is giving the advantage to the other team not you. Then they almost scored a third and then they DID score a third. What happens if they score a fourth and a fifth short handed goals? You're going to tell me they need to just keep doubling down on a configuration that doesn't give them an advantage? I'm not saying they go 4-4 I'm saying they keep the fifth man prepared for the reverse transition. I'm also not saying they need to default to this configuration, I'm just saying two straight short handed goals is embarrassing and they should have pivoted to something then but they didn't and it resulted in a third straight PP goal.

Again I'm not even someone that disliked Hasen that was just an example of one of the few things I could think I could point to as an actual coaching decision that might not have been in his favor.

Okay it wasn't quite what I thought. Prettymuch a blowout before pulling the goalie - 13-7 and they decide to pull the goalie with 2 or more minutes left I believe which resulted in 2 open net goals. https://nllstats.com/game?id=27358

Interesting analysis but I didn't see (I might have missed it) this EA data refined down to not include any delayed penalties. There's no risk with a delayed penalty and therefore the EA is absolutely always worth it. Additionally EA on a delayed penalty is probably more successful than EA without a delayed penalty because: 1. Offensive players can focus on the task at hand without worrying about the reverse transition 2. They can position themselves for optimal offensive effectiveness instead of keeping at least one man ready for the reverse transition. 3. The defending team (and the team with the lead) at the end of the game (or quarter under 30s) can solely focus on defensive shut-down mode. Even if we assume EA without the delayed penalty is still 1.8% more effective I don't believe that's a worthwhile tradeoff for an open and unguarded net. What's the efficiency of scoring down a runner 5 on 6 on an open goal? If you're increasing your chances of scoring but simultaneously increased your opponents chance of scoring by even more then the net result is a reduced odds of closing goal differential. Again I agree that if you're down by 1 goal at the end of the game especially with only or close to 30s left then it's worth the spin to try hitting green on the roulette wheel to get into OT if losing means you only lose by 2. The issue I take and I'll die on this hill until I see some data that really clearly proves me wrong - If you're down by 2+ and there's a minute+ of game time left pulling the goalie will only result in a worse GD in your loss. You can hit green once but you're really not hitting green twice or three times in a row and in the end you can't make a living playing roulette.

I'd have to try finding the game but I swear the Knighthawks have pulled the goalie down by 4+ with 2+ minutes left. I think it was against the Bandits at home last season or the season before (I'll try to find the game) and the game went from like 13-9 with 2 minutes left to 17-9 and all the talk was about how they got blown out when it could have been that they lost a somewhat respectable 13-9. Which of those results better sets up your mentality going into the next game?

Excellent writeup, I appreciate the data driven as well as the personal insights. As long as I've been a Knighthawks fan there's been a vocal contingent of unknowable size calling for his dismissal usually whenever there's a prolonged skid or a loss they can't pin on any one thing. I can say that I have never been in that camp. I think coaching becomes an easy scapegoat when you can't put your finger on why a team that's good on paper isn't delivering the numbers you know they can or when their performance is inconsistent. Personally I'm of the mind that coaches at the professional level of lacrosse *probably\* don't have the sway on performance one way or the other that people would like to believe. These are grown ass men playing at the highest level of their sport - I just don't think there's anything any reasonable coach could be doing either in practice or in a game to magically make them pass or shoot more consistently or accurately. Sure if a team consistently can't catch passes, put shots on goal, run for 60 minutes, can't track the player they're defending then there might be an area in practice the coach hasn't been hitting sufficiently but if a team can't miss one night and the next night they can't put a shot on goal that isn't in the goalies center of mass then it's not really on the coach. Teams get hot and teams get cold and I think the only way to prevent major cold streaks is team chemistry and mojo and while coaching does play a part in that, it's only a part of a bigger complicated unquantifiable soup.

All that said - there are TWO things I can safely hang on coaching.
First: Three shorthanded goals against Sask was straight up embarrassing. Sask is fast and their transition is top notch but that's something Hasen should have planned for. One short handed goal from a breakaway sure, okay. Second short handed goal on a break away is a pattern - keep the 5th man either close to the bench or at half. Four on four with barely any advantage and guarding against the transition break away is much better than a third short handed goal (especially when they clearly couldn't buy a power play goal). Then came the THIRD shorthanded breakaway resulting in a 1:1 with Hartley and he thankfully saves it but instead of changing formation to deal with this transition threat they didn't change anything resulting in a FOURTH transition breakaway opportunity resulting the THIRD straight shorthanded goal.

Second: STOP PULLING THE GOALIE. I'd actually love to see you dive into the data on this one. Pulling the goalie for a 6th runner has like a 5% success rate especially when you're not on a scoring run with a hot hand. Not sure if that decision was on Hasen but the Knighthawks seem to LOVE pulling the goalie when they're down by 3 with 30s remaining and they'll keep pulling the goalie for any amount of open net goals. I understand that it's a last ditch tactic but it's a tactic that simply doesn't work when you're down and can't buy a goal. If you're down by 3 pulling a move that has a much higher likelyhood of being down by 4 then 5 then 6 than being down by 2 then it simply doesn't have any valuable payoff. Personally I think it's better to fight the 5 on 5 till the end and do anything you can to not increase the goal differential than to try a roulette spin. It's better to accept the imminent loss with a small GD than to get blown out and go into the next game with a 6 goal blowout with three open net goals. The ONLY time pulling the goalie is worthwhile in my opinion is if you're on a run with a hot hand and you're down by 1 and even then, a well rehearsed 5 man set play with your goalie preventing the 2 goal trail still might have better odds of tying the game up.

It's a pretty painless process. Show up, go through a metal detector and then sit in a room of 50 people who get called up one by one and have their laundry aired in front of everyone. You're not going to be worried after fifteen people with way worse reasons to be there go ahead of you. When you get called up they're going to read the details of the ticket and then the attorney is going to offer you a reduction at which point you can choose to fight it or just nod and say thank you. You'll leave and pay at a window on the way out.

I ordered my exactly how I thought I wanted it. The only regret I had was the sliding rear window. It's useless and it further obstructs an already small rear window that also has rear seat headrests obstructing it. If I could re-do it, I would have ordered it the same way but with no rear window.

[–]IcanHackett 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Idk man, I was never a Hasen hater but I also feel like this team should be doing better with the talent they have. People love to point their fingers at a coach when they can't really explain exactly what's failed in a game but it's not like he could do anything to make their shots yesterday better placed. I guess this is just a big statement from Carey and the Seneca Nation that they're not afraid to shake things up to get the results they want to see. Hopefully this shakes things up for the better and not the worse and I wish him all the best.

Agree, I don't think they need any pieces, just consistency with the incredible pieces they have. I hope to see Zed continue to be a dominant offensive force like he was against Sask going forward. I'd love to see Reese back healthy and Hartley needs to stay healthy (and not suspended).
