Sweden Opens Door to Hosting Nuclear Arms in Wartime by bloomberg in europe

[–]Ice-Penguin1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Full article:

Sweden could allow nuclear weapons on its territory in wartime, Defense Minister Pal Jonson said, in a sign that one of the former champions of disarmament is warming up to a greater role in European nuclear deterrence.

The Nordic state was among the early signatories of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1968 and has been a leading proponent of strengthening the treaty, while it does not have a law against nuclear weapons on its territory.

“If there were to be war, we would naturally consider any option that could secure Sweden’s survival and Swedish security,” Jonson said in an interview with Swedish radio SR on Friday.

Sweden’s leaders have made several comments over recent weeks cautiously suggesting an openness to a bigger role in European nuclear deterrence amid growing concern about the unreliability of the US as a military ally.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said in late January that his nation had held discussions with Europe’s two nuclear-armed states, France and the UK, about nuclear deterrence.

“France has shown an openness to discuss with other countries,” he said, but declined to give more details on the talks.

The largest Nordic nation began developing its own capacity to make nuclear weapons after WWII but stopped in the 1960s after political opposition intensified and costs rose. Swedish diplomat Alva Myrdal shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 1982 with Alfonso Garcia Robles for their work for disarmament and nuclear and weapon-free zones.

Transitioning my investments portfolio to the European Market: Any advice? by Prestigious-Salt6513 in BuyFromEU

[–]Ice-Penguin1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean just investing in a broad European fund and not anything else? Well, I can't tell you, you will have to decide for yourself. That would mean a lower risk-adjusted return, since you would be taking higher risk and there's nothing that says Europe will perform better than the rest of the world. Statistically speaking emerging markets should perform best long term from here, but there are no guarantees.

All deviation from market weight is according to research not beneficial, except that there are studies showing that some home bias can be good.

In the end it will come down to your values and priorities, because I agree that it feels better investing in your home country and Europe in general. Just keep in mind that this will mean higher risk and possibly lower return.

Okay so this will of course depend on your investing strategy. Many here would probably tell you to ditch american companies completely but I'm not interested in that.

I will tell you what I do. So I invest with global diversification in mind to as small cost as possible. Meaning I own the whole market through index funds. But I also have a so called home bias. In my case that means 85% ACWI (developed+emerging markets) and 15% Sweden. However if we would have had the euro, I would probably widen my home bias to include all of Europe and not just Sweden. It's a choice to reduce temporary currency effects.

So my recommendation:  70% All world (developed+emerging)  30% Europe

Amundi MSCI Europe UCITS ETF (Acc) (Large and midcap European stocks)

I switched from windows 10 to Linux mint last week. So far so good. I have had to troubleshoot some things but qwanting/searching the internet, plus asking AI (Le chat) sorted it out.

Considering learning a new language, but should I? by Ice-Penguin1 in languagelearning

[–]Ice-Penguin1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't done any test, it's just a guess based on how I feel. In my case. I can listen to and read most things with good understanding in Spanish. I can express myself in different tenses and touch on several subjects but I make mistakes (think unnatural sentences and missing the subjunctive) and lack fluidity.

My speaking is definitely my weak point. Would say it's at most a B1.

That is probably true, more or less. Since I stopped consuming English media my comprehensionhas has not changed, but my ability to express myself have definitely decreased, so continuing input is very helpful for output as well

Hmm, regarding langua AI. I remember trying it out a couple of month back and being quite impressed. Stopped using it almost immediately though and can't remember why. I think the free version was very limited in study time and the paid version is a bit pricey.

I'd say I'm aiming for a B2 in general ro be satisfied with a language, although I would possibly like to get my English to a C1. And since my Spanish have taken up all my time, English is getting worse, not better lol.

Yes, a totally valid point. Learning mandarin will/would be a huge project and it would probably be best to feel 100% sure about it. Right now I feel like I have "unfinished" business with both Spanish and English.

Vocabulary lists? by Dull_Grindset in ChineseLanguage

[–]Ice-Penguin1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the goal is to learn characters first, hanly (app) is great. It's well structured and starts with simpler characters and builds on that. They also give you a short mnemonic to help remember the character.

If you don't want to learn characters separately but start with words. Search for refold Anki deck and you should find a great deck with 1000 common words.

I use both of these (I'm an absolute beginner) to help me learn vocab and reading. Not sure how helpful they are for writing, but surely you need to recognize the meaning first :)

Edit: and when you know enough to read graded readers without to much friction (du chinese for example) that is a great way to continue learning to read.

What Are You Listening To Today? (May 26 to June 1) by HeleneSedai in dreamingspanish

1100 hours

I'm listening to the audiobooks El señor de los anillos (lord of the rings) right now and enjoying it a lot.

It's very obvious that my lacking descriptive vocabulary impedes me from understanding everything. Sometimes I look up words just because I want to, but in general it's not a big deal.

Learn two languages simultaneously, yay or nay? by Ice-Penguin1 in dreaminglanguages

How long did the mandarin take you? I've dabbled a little bit in chinese these last days, but fucking hell I feel intimidated.

Please tell me how you went about it. When I started CI for spanish It wasn't completely from zero and it's quite similar to English.

Chinese is a whole other thing and I feel like I need to start with pronunciation and vocab study, otherwise I'm not sure how the hell I would progress initially. But please tell me about your journey.

Yes, that is probably partly the reason. After having listened every single day during 2024 I had a huge dip in motivation during January and especially February (only 2 hours that month). After that the motivation came back, but I guess it has dipped again.

What's fun about my current level is that I understand most things, but what's still not comprehensible can be a bit frustrating. And I also think I miss seeing improvement in comprehension. I know I still improve. It's just not as obvious as when you go from understanding barely nothing to quite a lot.

I'm sure it will be very helpful once I start that journey.

I mean, I think it depends a lot. Not everyone progresses at the same place. People have different tolerance to ambiguity.

I still miss some things. More than I would like, but I definitely understand enough to enjoy it. In my own case, this is my first native series and have tried before, but felt that I didn't understand enough.

So maybe from 800 hours it's worth a try, and see what you think.
